Gun for Vana???

I recently got my first set of 5* equipment for the HoH certification. Now i'm almost at the Vana run (currently on The Gauntlet mission). I figure once I complete the missions I'll be grinding Vana every so often for the radiants and whatnot. I only have the 1 set of equipment that is above 3*. The two weapons I have is a sword (levi) and bomb (4* in agni line).

That said, I have no gun. However I think it might be wise to spend some time getting a gun for Vana runs. My question is, which gun would be the best choice? I can learn whatever style of gun need be, so the type doesn't matter to me. Also, it should be safe to say I'll only be keeping it at 4* for quite some time, so any 5* bonuses need not apply.

I figure the choices will be either:
Mega Magnus (magnus)
Strike Needle (autogun)
Breach Blaster (blaster)

I don't think i'm going to be using any tokens for the Antigua, as I dont have near enough. So the Raptor is out. As is the Mysterious Alchemy items.

I would be guessing the Mega Magnus if i had to pick without asking for help.
Or is a normal type gun better?

Thanks

one of the most frequently asked questions

This topic has been heavily discussed. It's the core of pretty much any question about equipment for Firestorm Citadel. Try searching Google for something like "FSC loadout site:forums.spiralknights.com" (without the quotation marks). You will probably find over 100 threads. The question is also covered in the Mixing Weapon Types section of my detailed sword guide.

First let me say that many guns can be used to defeat Vanaduke. I've soloed him using Valiance, Blitz, Callahan (old style), Nova, Storm, Hail, Polaris, Argent. And I'm not especially good at gunning.

If your party uses the Shivermist Buster tactic of freezing him, then you don't want to break the freeze except for big hits. So you want a charge-oriented gun. That basically means an autogun, alchemer, or magnus. Vanaduke's body is slightly vulnerable to piercing, while his mask is slightly vulnerable to normal. Autogun charges do insane damage. Combine these facts and you arrive at the most popular solution: Blitz Needle.

Even if your party does not use freeze, landing a bunch of ultra-powerful charges is a good way to kill Vanaduke quickly, before you make enough mistakes for him to kill you. So Blitz is still popular. In fact, expert parties tend to just use four Blitzes (or three Blitzes and a Plague, but I haven't crunched the numbers on that recently).

Keeping the gun at 4 stars (Strike Needle) is also fine. Enjoy.

sorry, forgot to mention i

sorry, forgot to mention i searched the forums, with no pings. I guess the search tool for this forum isn't the greatest?

i'm not one to just post randomly, i usually look first.

oh, and i should mention i'm usually soloing. although bosses are an exception, but still, i will probably try to solo vana more than party.

Thanks for the reply

forum search is terrible

You are right that the forum search is terrible. Never use it. Just search Google, Yahoo, Duck Duck Go, etc. For example: FSC loadout site:forums.spiralknights.com.

For solo knights, there are two main strategies. The first strategy is to use small regular attacks (not charge attacks), circling Vanaduke, slowly wearing him down. The second strategy is to use big charge attacks. Both work. In both of them you have to dodge slag guards and watch out for floor fire. Don't spend all of your time putting out floor fire. That's a common rookie mistake. Spend your time doing damage to Vanaduke. It's also nice to kill one slag guard as soon as he spawns. Blitz helps with that.

You just have to practice it many times, and then it's not hard. There are many videos on YouTube, if that helps. Anyway, have fun. :)

If you want to actually kill Vanaduke, then Strike/Blitz Needle. Unless you have a Shivermist, you will be dead weight for the party.

Second, IDK what sort of game you're playing Bopp, but soloing Vanaduke is ****ing hard, even with the top of the range equipment. Don't try to solo Vanaduke. It's not worth it. You should go with a party until you get familiar with the place. Even then, it's better to just have some FSC capable friends who are willing to join you (and you willing to join them), rather than trying to solo the place.

Besides, SK is an MMO! What's the point of playing a MMO if you play it alone?

response

My posts weren't supposed to encourage or discourage soloing Vanaduke. Post #1 assumed that he'd be in a party. Then he said that he would solo a lot, so post #3 switched to giving solo advice.

Yes, Spiral Knights is more fun when played with other people. In particular, you will be much happier if you learn Vanaduke's AI in a party. But once you've practiced it many times, you can solo it without much difficulty.

well i'm sure vana is hard to

well i'm sure vana is hard to solo. I haven't even faced him once yet. But like the other bosses, I do party (and I am trying to party more) for them. My problem is that my internet isn't the greatest. Sometimes its great, other times junk where i cant play at all. And other times when it seems great, until the worst time when my internet lags out and skips and i die unexpectedly or run into hazards, etc.. That is the reason I don't really party, I don't want my internet to lag out when a tough part comes up.

But I finished The Gauntlet, so I can do the King of Ashes mission now, instead of grinding to the FSC in the arcade like i have done and didn't fare to well. After the advice, I went ahead and crafted the autogun, and got it to the Strike Needle last night. Got a fun little UV, Damage vs Undead: medium. So thats fun for FSC right?

Anyway thanks, kinda situational when to use the autoguns i see. Not being able to move when firing (especially charged shot)...not being a gunner its a little different to get use to. I might get the blaster line so i can move a little when soloing but...

thanks for the help.
