Basically, are there diminishing returns that make it less effective? I know VH is ideal, but in terms of effectiveness with low lag, shield canceling, and cost, what's the best?

cause you said ideal, definitely max asi. Imagine if you swing around the same time as your enemy, person who has max asi would always win.

Max ASI if you know how to do
Max ASI if you know how to do the super duper flourish striker shield cancel thing (if you've come up against it you'll know what I'm talking about).
If you just spam your combo ASI wont really make a difference.

I play Recon, so ASI means less time I am exposed between shield-cancel Flourish strikes. Do it right, and there is barely a flicker of your existence. Abuse this right and you can cause a player to dramatically freak out.

Just ragecraft and hope for the best. Unless you seriously want to have the best pvp gear possible ad money isnt a problem AH prices are ridiculuous for such things.
Imo, no ASI at all is actually more effective due to the invincibility frames that occur when knights take damage. The faster your sword swings, the less likely the full combo will connect - that's why Cutter and Autogun series deal the least damage in LD.
