Auction House Auto-Bidding

I can't tell you how many times I've placed a bid and in the Auction House, had to log off for some reason or another, and lost the bid because of that. My suggestion is to add a feature like EBay, where you can set a limit to how much you're willing to bid, and if you're offline it will place a higher bid of a preset increment if you are outbid by someone else. This would probably greatly increase the popularity of the Auction House, and make bidding and auctioning in Spiral Knights much more enjoyable.

Dunno how ebay works but if 2+ people auto-bid the same amount who takes priority?

There would be a set time between each auto-bid (e.g. 30 seconds), causing almost no stalemates to happen. If the problem still happened (extremely unlikely at this point), the highest bid for that "contest" would be decided by a random number generator.

@Juances - On Ebay it's whoever placed the automatic bid first and is ideally how it should work here. The second person would be informed that an earlier bid applies and they need to submit a higher bid.

RNGing between two people is a terrible idea.

This would be useful to help people stop losing items to others throwing in last minute bids when they're not online. Naturally it would be necessary to put aside whatever money is put into an automatic bid but at least having that option would be nice.

So...

...do you mean that if I saw something I liked just short off a few seconds and I could afford the current bid price, and I put a superior one, I would lose the item due to an automatic hidden script? That doesn't sound nice to me...

I would prefer bids being locked to new petitions from not current bidders when in Very Short time. THEN, if you had made a bid there in Short or further, you would be able to put another in the Very Short time and "fight it out" with other bidders.

I had this idea, whereby you can choose to auto-bid till a set price.

This idea was shot down (by myself) in the case where you can actually put that "set price" at the first place.

The problem with this is, the point of bidding is to get an item cheaper than what you'd normally pay for it. If you pay the maximum price you're willing to pay straight up, regardless of whether anyone would actually bid higher than your first bid, you're no longer getting it cheaper now, are you?

This feels a bit much...like cheating...sort of...

All things considered, imo.

Exactly my point ;D

"If you pay the maximum price you're willing to pay straight up, regardless of whether anyone would actually bid higher than your first bid, you're no longer getting it cheaper now, are you?"

Well if you want it anyway, won't you actually be bidding the maximum price you would afford to chunk out? It seems as similar to auto-bid to the fact that you will still be outbidding others, but only by placing a bid that no one else may even try to outbid. This way you won without having to stay up for the next few hours or so.

You won't even be getting it cheap if everyone else just wants to bid for it.

Well sometimes people just pop one bid on an item just to "see if they can win it at that price" regardless of the current bid. The way you'd normally counter this is by bidding again, to increase the maximum of what you're normally prepared to pay by about 5%. But that requires you to be online now, doesn't it?

The problem is, if you can't be online at the time, and you really needed the stuff badly, you might as well place as much as you are willing to go for it, in such a tactical way that it is affordable by you, and that no one else wants to bid it. If not, just wait it out and find another opportunity to buy it.

This has Pros and Cons. Speaking as someone who is all set in the Gears department and who doesn't go in for Costuming or Accessories and such, I don't think an Auto-Bid Feature is necessary or even advisable. Bid what you are willing to pay and be happy if you get it. There will always be another...

On this subject, I think Guild-based Auto-bidding for Furnishings WOULD be a good idea. And I'm starting a Thread to address it...

As an experienced auction

As an experienced auction trader on both SK and lots of other auctions, I have to say auto-bidding feature is very useful to make auctions easier to use and saves you a lot of money, makes auctions a friendlier place for us players. But only if you have a lot of trades going on, in my opinion Spiral Knights do not need any Auction House upgrades, we need more levels and new content.

I believe placing more money in a bid is not a very good option for two reasons:
- others can still outbid you at the last moment
- if you bid a lot and you've won, you could've won with a smaller bid (in most cases)
