Sue me!
I wonder how many of the SK community does too, I doubt it's the majority. The only thing that irritates me is the lack of a currently-held-weapon icon, but I'm fine for the rest.
I... Actually like the new GUI
The old ui had an endearing style that I feel was butchered for reasons unknown, but the new one works. As long as it works, I'm fine with it.
Ok, when do you wanna go to court? tommorow or now? Also, do you have a lawyer?
I like the cleaner look of the new GUI. Everything is just a bit more polished.
The old user interface, although superior in displaying information in a more comfortable point of view, looked like it was drawn in ms paint.
We don't care that you like the new UI, everyone has their own opinion and that's good for them.
Also, I haven't been around for long so I never got to see what the old UI looked like and why it was better, can someone show me a screenshot?
It's cleaner. The issue with huge portrait blocking parts of the screen can be resolved with a bigger monitor or changing the resolution.
I don't understand why people hate the new UI, other than the fact that you can no longer see everyone's exact hp or whether they're waiting on the elevator.
And yeah it's beyond me why anyone would play this game in 1024x768 or whatever
@Ellthan-Cosmolion
There was/is a thread a little while ago about random SK screenshots. But if you're too lazy to find it...
This was just standing around Haven
And this was just being in the Clockworks.
Differences off the top of my head:
- Crowns and Energy are no longer permanently visible (crowns just under the minimap, energy in the bottom right corner of the screen)
- The buttons to bring up a lot of options and menus were moved from the top of the screen to the bottom
- Your health bar got moved to the top left corner of the screen, and health got changed from bars (also called pips) to a percentage.
- Pills, remedies, and vials are now at the bottom of your screen, instead of top
- You used to be able to see (and hover over) the weapon icon of your current weapon at the bottom of the screen
- The old UI didn't have the "scroll wheel" of your weapons, that now appears when you change weapons
- In the top left, the party leader would always be at the top of the list of players in the party
- You could only see the first 20 pips of health your allies had (The only way you could tell if they took damage is if you either saw them take damage, or when they drop below 20 pips of health).
looked like it was drawn in ms paint.
you must be really skilled in MS paint then
And yeah it's beyond me why anyone would play this game in 1024x768 or whatever
jesus christ
I like the new UI as well. I feel like SK needed a huge rejuvenation as I was getting quite bored on the days before. Boy did they deliver on that... But as for the people STILL COMPLAINING, I'd rather they see this video
I think the main reason why people hated the new UI is because it wasn't really easy to get used to. It took me about a few weeks to get used to the new UI, then I eventually liked it.
And yeah it's beyond me why anyone would play this game in 1024x768 or whatever
And it is beyond me that people are actually whinning about how someone esle play when they explained to you why they play like so...
Yes I saw your comment on Shamanala video. XD
Yeah me too... At the Monster Cake event, I saw they announced the new UI, so I went in, Instead of whining and throwing a hissy fit and pouting over it like everyone else, I actually stopped to get myself used to my new environment. Took me 10 seconds flat (getthereference) to get used to it. Heck, I'm using hotkeys I never used with the old UI.
@thimol
Yeah, believe it or not, some people play in minimum resolution. Maybe they're trying to play on their ipad or something.
@rhagnarok
People were complaining that the screen is cluttered by the new UI. They wouldn't have that problem if they actually expand the window a little bit.
Icons we have now looks like cheap, generic MMO icons. All "new" buttons and other UI elements with those gradients and bevels looks cheap, "clipartish" and so nineties. Overall it looks much worse, but from marketing point of view probably is more eye-catching for average teenage gamer with low taste and mostly ignorant when it comes to graphic design. Also it makes SK looks more familiar for average member of MMO crowd (most people are afraid of new, unknown things and prefer things that are seemingly new, but actually very familiar and similar to things they already know).
Generally "new" UI is classic example of what happens when Marketing Guys are trying to do Designer's job.
End of facts. Time for opinion. I don't like it. At all. Live with it.
"They wouldn't have that problem if they actually expand the window a little bit."
And play at 15 FPS instead of 35? No thanks.
Let OOO bring the old GUI back with newly-improved graphics.
The files for the old HUD are probably still in the game somewhere, so why not just add an option to choose?
"Default" or "Retro"
Yeah, believe it or not, some people play in minimum resolution. Maybe they're trying to play on their ipad or something.
okay that went over your head so I should just say that some people don't have a choice BUT to play in that resolution since their only other choice is 800x600
Press "X" to go to the past. Enjoy!
:)
No but actually, I'll stand by what I said back in April. The new UI fits the new SK... your choice if that's a good thing or not. (opinion: no.)
My main complaint about the thing is still This. The old UI scaled to both small and large resolutions better, the new one really only works on the midrange.
I like the new UI, but it isn't as good.
Which is why I am in the very slow process of making a mad, er mod. Long story, why I'm talking about it here.
It was just that the old UI was unique. Point me to the game which has a similar art style, please!
Also, new UI causes crashes and slowdowns. Happy!
The only thing which I like is that the new UI makes you feel like the Knights don't belong on the planet. They have shiny stuff and they're all...techy. While this whole planet is steampunk. We don't belong here. The old UI didn't have such a feel.
If you lose half your FPS at any size above minimum, there's something seriously wrong with your computer.
If you lose half your FPS at any size above minimum, there's something seriously wrong with your computer.
yeah, like OLD and POOR and JOBLESS
of course that begs the question: why are you playing SK poor and jobless but hey shut up I'm in school and I like to pass the time
My PC can run high graphics in fullscreen with smooth framerate, and it was an unwated computer from one of dad's previous workshops. We had a few spare things, fixed it up and BEWM I'm here today bragging about it. Free of charge and I'm homeschooled.

Bahaha, you just got told "GTFO casual" on a gaming forum! I can scarcely think of worse possible burns.
Anyway I disagree if it is Spiral Knights. Casuals are allowed to play Spiral Knights. Just don't even think about touching Dark Souls or Skullgirls or any of that shizznizzle with your casualness brah, you might get us infected.
I don't mind the UI. The only thing I wish it had was the Crown and CE counter automatically down the side of the screen.
The new one feels clustered for no good reason to me, while the old one looked like a mock-up of a GUI-design, being so flippin' ugly in pretty much every aspect.
In the end, both had their drawbacks, and I like both after you get used to their clusteredness/simplicity to the point it looks like a prettied up debug console. I think ultimately, if they would've added some of the design choices of the new HUD but would've kept the structure pretty much exactly like the old one we would've gotten a pretty much completely improved one, with the clean looks of the new one and the overview and structural simplicity of the old one.

i was talking about myself
Casuals are bringing the game down with their "I want it now" attitude and laziness.
So having bad PC mean you should not play Spiral Knights? I don't get your reasoning Batabii...
The game was already easy before the AI nerf... I don't get why people are whinning that this game isn't hard... it wasn't even hard in the first place!!!
If you think that an alpha wolver tracking you is a nightmare, you should play Devil May Cry on Hell or Hell more often... Or play Stepmania, that'll improve your reflexes and skill a bit.
SK is a casual game, for casual people. Whether you take a casual game and play hardcore is another story, this game is for kid and is fun and entertaining. Vanaduke is easy, I know it, you know it, everybody knows it, even Nick knows it!
Vets are bringing the game down with their "I am right" attitude.
Edit: God I still remember from DMC4 that lightning beast teleporting like a ***** always killing me >.<
@shamanala
That's how most other online game works...you don't meet the minimum specs, you don't play it.
The game was never "easy" if you use the gear that matches your stratum (for example, obviously using 5* gear in tier 1 makes it easy). Except now that there's a Normal mode.
SK is NOT a casual game. It takes weeks or months of play to make any progress past the first tier. You can't just play 15 minutes and quit, you'll get nowhere. Casuals are the people who whine about not getting enough orbs/sparks, the game being "pay to win", and the people who ditch everyone after two floors.
You want a casual game, go play angry birds or farmville.
This is a casual game, Snarbolax is pretty straight foward, so does JK, RT and FSC.
Casual don't mean you play 15 minutes and quit, casual playing only means playing for fun, from time to time. Playing to be entertained and enjoying it, while playing on easier difficulty. I see Casual gamers playing on Elite as much as Normal, it depends on their mood really.
Every game catter to casual gamer and this game is/was for casual gamer from the get go... Whether you aknowledge it or not is another story...
I've always dealt with proper gear for proper stratum when I first started. I can even support FSC in 2*... I did FSC in 4* so many times (I just did it yersterday to heat up some stuff, had to do 24-25-26 w/o vitapod in 4* and I went positive in Spark of Life...
ARPG wise, this game has a lot of good element, but is in no way a hardcore RPG game, it's a casual MMORPG... and that's what I like about it
Edit: And now we can do SL in normal... cattering to casual player
shamanala made me think...
right now casuals go in elite with no problems... are the changes nick said will be made on elite mode going to change this? I mean, it's elite, it's not meant to be for everyone. well, it shouldn't.
as for gear, casual players tend to 1 follow other people: they see a lot of skolver/ vog/ chaos, and go for that; 2 follow guild/friends advice, which can make them go for more specific gear; 3 follow whatever other way of thinking they have. for example, I went for the defense enchanting: had problems with fiends, so crafted valkyrie, and then salamander to counter the fire weakness. I was going for BTS for piercing, but then I reached 5* HoH, I still had DTS and couldn't find an appropriate seller, so CoA (got lucky on this one). so, there are many ways of thinking like cheese or peaches. I mean, come on, you didn't read till this point, nobody cares about the history of my life, I can say anything.
Casual don't mean you play 15 minutes and quit, casual playing only means playing for fun, from time to time. Playing to be entertained and enjoying it, while playing on easier difficulty. I see Casual gamers playing on Elite as much as Normal, it depends on their mood really.
Isn't that just gaming in general? Unless you're MLG, you should only be playing for fun...
there is a line between "fun" and "desire to finish the game" or "going for 100% completion". look at hardcore gamers. honestly, they do it becuase of the challenge, not for fun. otherwise they wouldn't rage so much.
See there's the key. The people I'm mad at are the ones with no "desire to finish the game" (insomuch as it applies to Spiral Knights, anyway). Those are the ones ruining it. And I'm no completionist myself, but I prefer to play with people who actually give a crap and aren't just whining about how long it takes to get recipes, so they just craft the first thing they see, no matter how crappy it is.
those are the ones who say "uh, new game, let's finish it so I can hop to the next one when I see it". practically, they don't want to play for fun, but for bragging rights. "oh yeah, I played that game, I really liked it but then I hated it cause things are too expensive". that's how they end up.
Casuals are bringing the game down with their "I want it now" attitude and laziness.
THA'S RIGHT FOOOO! IF WANNA PROGRESS YOU GOTTA WORK HAARRRD! GET IN ON IT RELENTLESSLY! DON'T JUST THINK YOU CAN SLIP THROUGH FSC WITH YOUR BODILY WEIGHT SLUMPED DOWN IN YO CHAIR! YOU GOTTA BE ON EDGE AND TOUGH IT OUT, And you will be greatly rewarded with Orbs/Sparks/Shinings.
See there's the key. The people I'm mad at are the ones with no "desire to finish the game" (insomuch as it applies to Spiral Knights, anyway). Those are the ones ruining it.
No argument there. Words CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I HATE people who play SK for the TF2 hat and then just leave their account to rot. It's a disgrace to both sides (SK for people just playing it for some TF2 Item. I did that with Alliance of Valiant Arms for the Spy knife, but only because I found it boring. Which is what those TF2-SK dumpers do. I mean, just play up until the Snarbolax to see if you like it or not. Then do some research on how to progress and do more missions, then, and only then, will you have permission to quit early. (Form my point of view) TF2 because hats from games show that you LIKED the game, Why do you think I've been wearing the SK hat on my Soldier for a year now (Again, look at the AVA thing)?)
Hrm... I play video games primarily for the fun of it, but I have the instincts of a completionist and love a good challenge. Does that disqualify me from being a casual gamer?
On-topic: I do like the new look of the UI, but there are still things that need looking into, i.e. massive character portraits that don't scale based on resolution settings, lack of weapon display (clashes primarily with the infliction of the Curse status), amongst others.
It's okay, but from a feedback standpoint it is inferior to the older version.
the "completionists" are usually not casual gamers anymore. they do it because they want to finish something and not for fun.
unless you are a defender elite stuck in the 5* HoH, then you want to finish the lore but you will re-get to casual gaming after passing the damned hall.
usually after finishing the lore you are either here for friends or for gear. don't tell me SLs, those are above average casual gamer skill level.
Shadow Lairs aren't the impossible obstacle that people seem to think they are... just sayin'
I despise the new UI for a lot of reasons.
But if you like it, that's your opinion. No one's going to bash you out or anything.
