My experience has been that
My experience has been that he can't be cursed, since he's a fiend. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The best thing IMO is to stun and shock him so that he attacks slower, even though these status effects only last for about three seconds.

I've been killed many times
I've been killed many times when people throw stun vials with his shield active -.-
i do it every time i drop dead in the fight.
