I took a few tests related to damage. I chose slimes since I have the best gear for them. I am not necessarily saying this is viable, but I'm saying it can be done. All of these screenshots were taken in Elite mode.

I do have faith in armor. I believe that you can possibly tank, even in T3. It's just hard to do against, say, Shadow enemies because all shadow armor has some status resist or something, which lowers the vanilla shadow resist.

Tanking is kinda viable if you use good defensive armor with resistance and use poison+Flame Barrier. Getting the appropriate armor is not always easy, though. What you need is different from stage to stage.

Its questionable sometimes.

Well that is the general point of ancients don't you think? Otherwise all the SLLLLLOOOOW walking and reaction weapon time would make it rather worthless in wearing.

I try to balance out armor with style.

When I started it was Drakescale and Angelic armor for resist versus all kinds of damage so I would survive at least a few solid hits I wasn't expecting and I was lazy in changing armor and still kind of am.

I wear the Drakescale helmet and Silvermail crossup to kind of balance that with pve enemy scaling cause I really don't like the undead or beasts.

I do however think there is much more in movement speed. I find fancy footwork and bomb radius is key. I'm going after Mercurial. Although the Chaos cloak is truly awesome for the damage versus all bracket.. I'm still kind of choosing.

so you have there right Idea. But faith and relying upon a constructed object are two different concepts.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

@Actionpacked

Well, the reason for the title is coming from the mission with the same name. It's also kinda a joke about how people are saying defense is a lie and useless...it's like magic. If you believe in it, then it becomes real. xD

Anyway, for my play style, defense = offense. Even though I use my shield very regularly, there are times when it breaks, times when I'm lazy, and times when I just don't want to use it. When you use a DVS all the time, it means that any time you stop attacking to shield is lost DPS, and possibly lost HP depending on what you're fighting. Like you said, Flame Barrier and Poison are both very good for tanking...which is just why the poison on the DVS is perfect, and I do have a Flame Barrier, which lets me tank more hits and hit harder. (And also why I want the unconventional Scorching Barrier.)

Also, it's very important to note that, when you have high defense, each pip counts for much more. Therefor, while you may sacrifice some HP at first, once you have a big vita pod, maxing your HP means a lot more than it does for someone with heart pendants. I can pretty much take less time and luck to fill my HP and then I can stand my ground for just as long--if not longer--as someone with True Love Lockets or Penta Heart Pendants.

That's actually why I crafted a Volcanic Plate Mail and a Heavenly Iron Helmet. I still want either Snarbolax Coat and/or Almirian Crusader Armor...preferably both. I want to compare them.

I've played defensively and offensively, but I prefer a mix of the two, in such a way that I have a reasonable selection of weapons AND a reasonable amount of defense. Large amounts of defense is good, but is not worth giving up your ability to deal damage and be a crucial asset to your team. Similarly, large amounts of global damage and charge time reduction are good, but aren't worth giving up your ability to take a blow or two.

O_o .oO( ooh a reply)

@ Autofire "Hey nice name btw!"

I remember the Vita suit + +2Health Heart shield cross up when I first started to outlast most situations. Tanking will never go out of style. And when you slouch and take that lucky shot that was meant for another knight who runs past you it can sometimes make or break your day. I once ran down screen and ran into a heavy strike that pushed me back into something worse + I was dazed and my shield health was gone.. That's when your armor counts.

I usually freeze them all and charge attack right after the initial and ending freeze damage. ^-^ " Enemy Slushies!!!

Also good Nitronome Knock back spam and Bomb speed charge increase can really roll an entire screen of enemies and leave you and your party safe in the center.

Watching people drop from Shadow damage dark fire in levels before vanderduke boss still makes me smile even when its me.
Oh sweet memories.
