[A Game Master] - Today at 10:13am:
Greetings, Unfortunately there's no easy workaround to find those specific recolors. There are still some ideas that we'll need to test, but it will take some time. In the meantime, what I can suggest is to start a thread in the Wiki Editors forums to see if other editors can provide suggestions on how to expedite this. We'll certainly post there as soon as we have more information too!
-My Support Request

For this thread, DO:

post how you make/obtain high quality images for the wiki, regarding icons, and updating those icons.

DO NOT:
---suggest or upload raw RGB icons (if you must, tag them with something so someone notices them before a lot of time passes).
---upload cropped screenshots of icons. Relevant, but not exactly the issue.

A Method: Finding the File: comment #1

An "Unconventional" Method: ??? comment #2

A Method: Steam Inventory comment #3

will actually link to comments if the thread gets really large.

Finding Certain Icons

You can find some icons in this file directory (for the Windows 8 OS, anyway):

computer ------Windows (C:) ------ Program Files (x86) ------ Steam ------ Steam Apps ------ Common ------ Spiral Knights ------ rsrc ------ui------icon

Steam Users:
you can right-click "properties" in your games list on SK, then press the "browse local files" button.

Be sure to NOT MODIFY that file as it is in the game files. Copy/paste the image (or file) into whatever program you use to edit images, and then save that file into a personal folder (something in your MY DOCUMENTS file, or similar), and then upload to wiki from there.

Most icons on the wiki are 256x256, png format.

This method gets you specially shaped icons, such as the one for the Blooming Prize Box.

I am quite close to figuring out how the format is laid out through some unconventional methods.

This is supposed to be the Companion Prize Box. As you can see the ribbon is almost 100% accurate. The box itself however is not. I'll be sure to update more if I can figure it out.

You can get properly colored icons from the Steam inventory, but their quality tends to be all kinds of butchered. I used them in a few places on the wiki (such as the Artifact page) since they're the best version of the icon we currently have.

Glacies: I hope you figure that out, a way to get the correct icon colors onto the original high-res icon would be neat.

Update 2: http://i.imgur.com/EcOOH8S.png

If you haven't noticed, this is the Katastophe Prize Box nearly 100% identical to the actual prize box itself but it still needs to be redone as the ribbon is a bit darker than what it should be and the background isn't the right setting.

I'll eventually post a how-to once I figured it out completely but I want to see if this method can be refined and/or made a lot easier.

Anyhow, I'm hoping tomorrow will be the day I figure it out completely as I must take my rest for now. Wish me luck!

Solstice Prize Box. It looks a bit off but it seems about right. I just need someone to compare it with a steam image.

EDIT: Tried the background but I have to figure out how the game handles that. Other than that I pretty much figured it out.

woo

@glacies looking good, wondering what program(s) you're using.

@kattsy thank you.

I can take care of the prize

I can take care of the prize box icons. I use a work intensive process in Photoshop to get "close enough" recolors. It involves splitting the blue/red/magenta into separate layers and the using various tools to shift the colors until they approximate a screenshot from in game.

Are there any other recolor style icons that need doing?

*_*

Oh yes please-
All accessory icons, all costume icons need updating. If I think of any more, I shall return here. Also if anybody else thinks of others, gogogo! haha.

At last, the red text is going to go away ;n;.

Example: the Fur Cap page. The old icons for all except lovely and shadow need updating, and lovely and shadow need to exist.
For...all...the recolor forms...splash...trojan...field/plumed/stately caps. That's all I can think of at the moment regarding costumes.

And accessory icons are generally out of date, but those are not only recolors, but also the same color+shape in general (a few auras have their own colored icons, like dreadful), so that's less work than costumes...probably?

most furniture icons.

Hello, work!

Thanks so much, it's great to improve the wiki together.

I'm remembering that Glacies was underway with a similar process. Perhaps we can help? It seems like a lot of icons *_*.

If I may request:
If very specific, clear, instructional steps for obtaining a "recolor icon" are shared by you Equinox (so that even the simple brain of a devilite could understand it), I'm pretty certain the workload can be divided up. But we wouldn't let devilites do any of the work, they'd sabotage everything. This might pave the path for future editors as well. Though the software I use by default (most comfortably) is pretty outdated...we'll see!

Equinox, I can probably give a closer information on how to obtain the recolors that work a lot better using a couple of tools myself but it sounds like we have the same method aside from I use GIMP 2 and you use Photoshop.

It just requires a bit of math for conversion and some data digging but works decently well aside from the Green layer as you can see from the Solstice Prize Box I did a few posts back.

I've almost gotten the format cracked for the costume themes themselves, it's just a matter of actually figuring out the latter part. I tried doing a lovely brigandine and it turned out... decent.

Colors are slightly off but I'm still trying to work on getting the colors exactly spot-on.

I'll freely explain when I return later in the evening about my method for the prize boxes. Costumes are another story until I can figure it out a lot better than what I have. (unless this is suitable for now?)

Related....

Speaking of images and visuals and such (okay, it's pure tangent):

Node 101056 would love dev/GM feedback. We're super excited about APNG's potential on the SK wiki.

Hmm

since accessories don't have their own form icons like costumes (they might some day, until then....) I move that we alter the accessory/row template to have the style_slot naming instead of the individual style_accessory naming. That way, we have far fewer icons to recolor regarding the accessories.

Well Then...

I've been hearing more complaints, and been hearing people talking about hearing more complaints, about a lack of icons around the wiki, particularly furniture. I'll spend some time doing the best I can with the tools I have tonight, but I know that someone more skilled can do this better. Feel free to replace icons if you feel you can do them with maximum sexiness. But I'm going to get rid of the red text that I see, because I am also annoyed by not only text that is red, but the way it takes up space in tables (scrunched or long, both annoying).

I replaced acc and costume recolor icons with the arsenal icon long ago - easy to undo, but...IMO, have like, all the icons ready for a rapid upload if you decide to fix all of those. Weeeee! Upload party!

I've tagged my work with the "needs updating" tag for the future.

Weeee!

Icytea seems to have figured a few things out. Thanks!

That #ifexist code is clever and really helpful too.
