Craftable upgrades

People have been looking for possible new material sinks.

One option is to make upgrades craftable. Instead of buying your upgrades straight from boost, you can craft them at an alchemy station. The energy cost of the upgrades would not have to change,* but the crafting would also cost some materials (preferably ones that are currently in low demand), and maybe some crowns (although that doesn't seem really necessary.)

Since upgrades expire, this introduces a recurring sink for materials for players. For the upgrades currently available from boost, you could introduce craftables with variable duration. Higher duration requires higher stat mats, and a better energy/duration ratio. It is important that there is an easy too access version for the 1st tier players, that requires only mats up to 2*.

An additional advantage, is that the upgrades appear less as an "Pay to win" option. To new players, the fact that currently there are these upgrades that obviously cannot be bought with mist energy alone, may give the impression that this is one of those F2P games, where one is expected to buy one's way to success. Even though nothing really changes energy wise by making the upgrades craftable, they feel more integrated into the rest of the game.

Besides the upgrades currently available from boost. You could also include a craftable mist tank. The tank would cost 100 energy to make plus say 1000cr and some really common mats such as a gel core. Since they cost 100 energy to make, you cannot use them as a way to convert materials into energy. Instead it works as a way of storing mist energy for later use, at an additional cost. This option may be interesting to casual players that, for example, only have time to play on the weekend, at which time they may want to play slightly longer than one mist tank allows.

*A slight decrease may be in order to compensate for the extra cost in mats and maybe crowns.

Did I understand correctly?

Although I think your last comment may have covered my concern I just thought I would comment to make sure I understand your point. So you began by saying that the energy prices would not change but that boosts would cost materials also. Although this is another material sink (which I agree the game has little of) I don't think people would take to kindly to the idea. Before they could get their boosts from just the energy but now they have to spend mats as well. To them it would just seem as a waste of mats (although I guess this same argument could be made about the changed crafting prices). Like you said at the end, if the goal is to make boosts more desirable to new players while still having an energy sink, why not reduce the amount of energy it costs based on how many materials you use. This way people don't think that the boosts cost more and it is easier to get them. As we have seen however, I don't think OOO would take too kindly to CE reductions as that would be, although small, still a loss in money for them.

I agree

I agree, just increasing the costs of upgrades would make a lot of players grumble.

As I see it there are a few ways around this.

-Decrease the energy costs of the upgrades by a small amount to compensate for the extra costs. 25ce reduction would be enough I think.
-Increase the duration of the upgrades to compensate for the extra costs.
-Introduce new upgrades at new price points. Shorter duration upgrades with a higher CE per duration cost then the current upgrades, and Longer duration upgrades below the current ratio.

I'll bump this idea again,

I'll bump this idea again, since there is increased interest in crown sinks.

This idea is not a pure crown sink. Instead it turns something what is currently a pure CE sink, buying upgrades, into a sink for materials and crowns as well. This increases the demand for crowns, and in addition should raise the material prices in the AH, and thereby increase the effectiveness of the listing/sales fee as a crown sink.

In addition the craftable misttank would, slightly reduce the demand for CE on the CE exchange. (By giving, people the option of saving their daily ration of ME for another day at the cost of crowns and mats.)
