Given there was no way to tell gear was patched back in until someone posted a gear drop after a specific update, it's perfectly reasonable that there'd be suspicion it'd get patched out without notice as well.

I don't think there has to be a patch for them to change it, since item handling is probably all server side.. unless they add in a new item of course. I could be wrong though.

Yes, drops are still possible after the Kat event. A 2* helm dropped for me three days ago (05/16/2014) in a D25 gremlin arena.
