Okay, so another forum thread (node 100955) I made on this got really confusing with rapid updates and expired examples - though all of the coding was available to sample in the page histories. Entirely my fault. I dabbled with some tables and code a bit and came to this conclusion: Considering how many items there are in certain categories, having them all (and images of them) on one non-category page would be gross looking, annoying to update, but useful. Hence this project/idea of mine. ANYWAY, new thread node here, clear all the wayward thoughts away:
I am proposing this system regarding finding items which follow color themes:
The main "Color Theme" page, which leads to individual color theme pages, such as:
Military. This page leads to an unconventionally set up category page, the
Category:Military-Themed category page.
For [[Category: X-Themed]] category pages ONLY (not other category pages), it could function as follows (these instructions should be included at the top of every x-themed category page):
For the links and images on this category page:
*Regular text: items such as armors, helms, weapons, and shields which follow this color theme.
*Italicized text: costume items which follow this color theme.
*Images: accessories which follow this color theme.
Category pages alphabetize everything in them by default, which is an okay method of sorting things - regarding finding things that you know the name of, anyway. Not so much for new players who have no idea what things are called. But they can use regular searches for more broad things like "costumes" for that. A player that's brand-spankin-new wouldn't find much use for these pages at all...and we wouldn't want them to. We'd rather them focus on gameplay than looks, am I right?
What do you guys think? I believe that these two pages, working in conjunction with each other, will help newish and old players alike find what they're looking for regarding colors. A simple search gives the color page, and then that color page leads to a relevant category page which contains all the items that adhere to that color theme. It would encourage users utilize category pages more, when they otherwise may have had no idea that category pages exist. Additionally, we, as wiki editors, would almost never have to update either of these kinds of pages, since the simple page has limited information that almost never, if ever changes...and a category page will update by itself so long as relevant pages have appropriate category tags added (normally seen at the bottom of every properly formatted page on the wiki).
This is a rather unconventional use of a category page, but it's not entirely out-of-this-world either. Compare to the previous:
Non-existent color theme page, and...say...the Category: Toasty-Themed category page (completely untouched by me or this project experiment).
As far as "is this allowed?" goes:
This is the sort of thing that is best discussed in the Wiki Editors forums, as it's best to have a consensus before making any major change. Whatever the majority agrees upon is fine with me! --Clotho 17:17, 21 May 2014 (UTC) - on Clotho's usertalk page.
I like this a lot, and I think we should go with it.
If you don't think so, what other method(s) would you propose?
Emphasis: the bold block text of instructions would only apply to [[category: x-themed]] category pages, not other category pages, with this method.
-Credits: Thanks especially to Wiki Editor: Trillium for making the wonderful Color Template on the regular color pages. (That thing with the three bars of color in the upper right-hand corner).
-Hexzyle's thoughts from the previous thread: The category page is intended to also be for the purpose of sorting wiki pages, rather than entirely for forming a reader-friendly reference page. Well that's my interpretation anyway.
---and my reply: but we have an opportunity to use a few categories and category pages in a super special way :3
