Test whether selling prize boxes or directly selling promotional items is the better fit

At the next promotion, make a box as you are so oft to do, with whatever probability distribution works.

Then, price the items inside of the box appropriately and put them all up for sale directly. For instance-

New prize box! 5 dollars.
Prize box as usual.

Bad prize (that 70-80%): 2.45 USD
Most of the sarongs/trunks were being sold for around this much, but in crowns

Moderate prize (The 20% reskined weapon): 20 USD
Charcoal grills, forks, etc. were all being sold for around 500K crowns.
Price varied, but felt like about the average, if not too low.

Good prize (if at 1%): 100 USD
As if the player had just purchased the 100 dollar energy bundle and traded it for the big item.
This might actually be a bit of a lowball on most of these things, to be honest.

Perhaps selling the items alone in the supply depot or simply for real world money would make you a larger profit? It would still be some good data to check and see.

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

I think they already did that in the last promo, in which they sold the boxes separately.

No, the only way to get sarongs, auras, and other costumey goodness was through the prize boxes.

I like the idea of selling items separately but:

I bought five splash boxes during the promo, receiving two weapons and three costumes.
With your system I would get only one weapon for the same price.

Even if I had only got one weapon out of five boxes, it would still be a better deal than one weapon for $20 because I would have four costumes as well.

Assuming the prices were tweaked to something like $15-17 for a weapons the only substantial difference this system would make is that there would be fewer costumes on the market. Hiking their prices and potentially lowering the cost of the weapons on the AH.

TLDR +1 could be neat to test on a few promos.

Isn't that the whole point? You pay more for a 100% chance of actually getting the item.

Imagine if they had put up Celestial Shield in the Supply Depot when the event was around. Do you think people who pay into this game would buy hundreds of boxes for the shield, or do you think they'd buy the shield outright?

But at the same time, that one box you open could have that one special item, saving you money.

Or it could not...

I like the idea, and think the results would allow quite a few players to be happy about being able to out-right get the rare items from promotions.
The only drawback to this is that it sets an ingame value (or value range) for the promo items. For example, shadow splash trunks are currently in the AH with bids at 138kcrn (or 2.1k E). I doubt if they could be purchased for the equivalent of purchasing 750E, they would be going for that much.

Prices could be very carefully presented, but ultimately it would control how the market for them changes in exactly the same way that supply depot sales do. How much of the market do we want OOO to actually control?

They could account for that based on current prices. I should have been more specific, but didn't want to over do it and have the OP be like 8 pages long. Shadow/divine/volcanic items would always have their prices bumped up, as they normally are. It would only be for one-two promotions anyways.... unless it worked out, and was a better model. I'm just really surprised that they haven't done this yet. A side by side comparison and hearing what people think of it could be invaluable. It really seems like a logical first step to me.

As for OOO controlling the market, they already do whether they like it or not.
