Picture it, Cooling Chamber, 2014. There I was, minding my own business when a lumber decides to hit me. I was frozen, but he wanted to take another shot at me. I thought up a quick little plan! I'll use the Angelic Aura to protect myself. But oddly, when he came to hit be again, the aura provided no protection. So I decided to experiment. I would intentionally put myself in harms way with the aura, and guess what? It NEVER protected me from damage. So seriously? What's the point of it?
What's the point of the Angelic Aura?
From my experience, if you use the seraph's aura while you have a status, the enemies can still hurt you. I've had it happen to me with freeze, shock, and I believe stun as well.
If you haven't already, you might want to invest skill points into it as you'll probably notice an improvement. I believe choosing an ultimate (getting your sprite to level 100) also helps.
I have the Seraphic Aura ultimate and I find that it offers a decent amount of protection. It's not perfect at absorbing damage but it's get great to have in some situations. It's not something that I'll use all the time but I feel that it sometimes gives me an extra second or so to rethink what I'm about to do. Breathing room, even for a short while, is always nice. Not having to hold a shield up to prevent shock spasm damage is also great.
The best (and most fun) uses that I've found for it are walking over spikes and walking through the row of lasers at the end of the Roarmulus Twins second depth.
Good luck trying to make it viable. :)
EDIT: Also, correct me if I'm wrong here but I think that status inflicting attacks cause more damage to a shield. Since Silversaps inflict both stun and freeze, it's going to be dealing a lot of damage.
I have all the skill points allocated in all 3 abilities. My sprite's actual level 96. The thing is for me, It never protects against enemies damaging me directly, like melee. It does block spikes, lasers, Retrode laser pulse stuff, and most projectiles, except gun puppy projectiles for some reason. I'm just a little bit upset because the main time I need it is when I'm in a pinch where I'm surrounded.
The angelic aura has a rather short time it is alive until you choose an ultimate for it. Until then, the aura itself is more to block attacks that interrupt you. If you are lit on fire, you will take damage still (the aura doesn't protect your innards sadly. D:), and for whatever reason if you're frozen the next attack will ignore your aura, but any attacks that follow will be protected against.
Yet another reminder from the makers that dodging is such a necessity and apparently the way to go (especially on elite mode where shields can't even take much from what they resist). No tanks in this game, just glass cannons. Also, I was under the impression the Kat shield was supposed to protect teammates (which I have never seen), but teamwork is apparently not the way to go either. It's just "do you own fair share of damage and don't knock things into me".
Their attempt at altering playstyles failed, and we all went immediately back to brandish spamming everything to death. The ghost's cloak is pretty useful especially when one gets the boosts, but I have seen quite a few players use it to hide while their team fights aka "I don't have sparks so you can all die instead". The game mechanics don't seem to really promote the correct things.
(Although I'm not complaining. These game mechanics promote strength in the individual and not passing the blame on teammates.)
Honestly, if they made the Kat shield cure status, I still think it would be underpowered. I mean to even utilize a very short (and small) shield with such a long recharge time during intense combat would involve a very high state of awareness and you would have to get near your team.
Although, maybe pets were not supposed to be very useful outside their hp/asi/ctr/damage boosts. Ghost is a bit too good compared to the other two though.
Actually, my playstyles were sufficiently altered by the battle sprites. I am able to tank things using heart attack + any armor, the invisibility from maskeraith lets me play an assassin class, and drakon lets me run faster and play aggressively, or hang back and spam a bit more. Having the ultimates certainly helps a lot though, especially with drakon.
But I would agree that the invincibility shield needs a serious buff... like perhaps actually being invincible for a while. Or lasting forever until it took enough damage to break. Or perhaps it could like auto-shield the team mates. I can see it going in a lot of ways, several of which would require balancing.
I see what you're saying. I find it unfortunate though that what makes drakon shine (my pet) is an optional ~2second speed boost that can be used every so often.
I find the dash feature more useful than any pet (outside the boosts of course, those are very useful). It is fast, frequent, and gets enemies eyes off of me for a bit.
I totally expected Drakon to have a damage boost ability that would make all my weapons inflict fire even to fire enemies (cause drakon is the boss of flames), but I guess he isn't the boss of flames. . . (curse you vog)
Maybe one day people will remember to use their pets in combat, even without a buff to them.
I am in agreement that the shield is severely useless in comparison to heart attack. If the shield provided direct regeneration then I think it would be of the same value as heart attack toa single player, but in a team heart attack would result in more health being dropped for everyone.
But honestly, the shield lets you walk over spikes and has some ctr. at least you can use it for *something*. The ray of light on the other hand effectively does no damage due to invincitinks. Don't even get me started on violent heart attack/haunted haze.
We've had the abttle sprite update, and it was great. now could you go about fixing it? I'd rather have usable sprites than thirty-whatever new armours, of which only perhaps 5 or so sets will be used.
I'm really hoping that the update after the gunner update will be the 'balance/fixing' update. People complain about lack of content because there is a very clear array of blatantly overpowered weapons and armour, thus causing a lot of items to go unconsidered. Instead of adding new content, balance the content that is already there so that player actually utilize the entire game, rather than the stupidly overpowered minority of items.
This should probably be in the arsenal, since battle sprites are considered gear? (They might as well be, we don't interact with them at all)
This so much. No damage from curse, immune to Caustic Quills, immune to VP knockback, and they deal two simultaneous statuses (with near 100% probability), and have a CRAZY fast attack animation.
@Batabii
Don't forget Redwoods being unable to inflict fire.
I'm fine with them being immune to pepperbox knockback. it's actually useful, like blitzing a trojan. They're also immune to brandish charge knockback, which is fine too. they're heavy. What I'm not fine with it them being immune to curse when they attack so often that it would be really helpful.
This is not necessarily a bad thing :)
@drachronos
Knockback is one of the few things VP has that Blitz doesnt, and incorporates into its entire strategy! And if you don't have knockback, the lumber will simply turn around and pound your skull in while you stand there reloading.
Trojans are interrupted by autoguns. Lumbers are not.
@Batabii
I remember one time when I was flash charging 3 Lumbers, and that I hit all of them several times and none of them whacked me.
Teammates can break your cat shield.
Don't forget that one.
Yeah be careful if you use it to cross spikes when a teammate is with you since they might cross with you and it'll break, and it damages you and not them.
I to this day never understood the protective aura.
Does it give more defense based on what gear you have? If so just much more hits are you able to take before it breaks? For vogs sake a party member was able to break my shield with a stun vial. I don't even
I too hope there is a battle sprite update in the future. There are some things that definitely need to be worked on.
They either need to fix the countdown (it keeps going 0-1-0-1 so it's impossible to predict), or give it color change like a normal shield. Also it needs some kind of animation to make it clearer when it's taken enough damage to dissipate.
Basically, the shield begins with a certain amount of hit points and immediately counts down these hit points once equipped. I'm not sure how much it is, but depending on the specific attack (not the damage type) the shield is dealt, it will vary the remaining endurance. Say for instance, the shield gives 100hp, but a rocket puppy missile does 70hp damage. So, the hp timer is already counting down with all the running around a player does, and depending on if you have at least 70hp of the shield when it hits, you will be protected. If not, and the shield is under that 70hp, you burn.
Lumbers are the heavy artillery, slow but packing quite a punch. I'd say they hit as hard as a trojan's hammer, immediately putting the aura shield at critical levels (it gets very red). I may be incorrect, but i think it's only Lord Vanaduke's bash attack which the shield can't sustain from, even if equipped just a split-second before.
I might be totally incorrect or not far off, but i just cannot recall an instance, except with Lord Vanaduke, where my shield didn't endured "a single attack". I've always played with the notion that it works off hit points and not just a straight-forward countdown timer for the aura shield's endurance. And i use my pet (seraphinx) extensively, considering i am a pure bred team player that protects my team resolutely (given that the players show some effort to play smart to begin with). I've been playing 3 years and know quite a few really good players. But never met anyone that looks out for the team like i do. And my pet has been a big boost for towards that effort. :)
@ Glowupball
I believe they increase the speed of teammates' shield regeneration. Not so much protection for them. At least, i think so.
I honestly only found Angelic Aura to be useful when it reaches its ultimate forms. Not only does it last for a good deal longer, at there is some sort of indication (at least with Seraphic Aura, there is) when the shield has taken quite a bit of abuse. However, it still doesn't help with regards to enemy attacks, I find, especially with Lumbers (take this statement with a grain of salt, of course, as I've honestly never really used it when being swarmed with enemies, as Iron Heart Attack is just so much more useful). In fact, I've only really used it when traversing various traps, such as spikes or fire, or even the wheels in FSC.
But, it certainly doesn't help in the slightest that the language concerning its ability is so incredibly vague. It says it'll protect me and whatever knights enter the aura, but, it doesn't specify as to what. It would be great if it said that it would protect me from status effects or traps, instead.
Why do you need it against the wheels? They only travel in straight lines. be patient and don't play in traffic.
I only really use it as a safety measure when running through that first portion of FSC, particularly so I'll at least have some defence if I lag into a wheel (or a patch of fire, which I should made note of before in my previous post). I have no problem navigating my way through without it, though.
You can walk over spikes to save time...
