http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinforcement

After so many UV rolls, unboxes, would-be radiant crystal depths, economical forge failures...
After so many promos (not all bad, but disparaging compared to actual permanent content)...
After all this, could you say with reason you could quit?

I'm still here after I said I'd stop, although now I'm working on my art blog.
Gunner Update is supposedly around the corner like the said 9+ months ago; is that all I'm waiting for?

Why haven't we sensibly just put our money where our mouth is and just stop?
Could you quit if you wanted to, or is Spiral Knights really out of our control and we're just "WAITING FOR THE BIG ONE".
Maybe we are reinforced to continue playing despite all the red flags.

Two or three months ago, I

Two or three months ago, I would've absolutely said no. I was pretty addicted. I'd get excited just thinking about waking up in the morning to play more.

Today, though, I'm in a different place mentally and everything, and if I truly wanted to stop playing, I would. But I don't really want to. :c I've taken various breaks for real-life reasons but I was never like "omg I wish I could play SK," it was just a thing that happened naturally and when I saw an announcement post, it was like, oh yeah. Hey I love this game, I should play more now that I'm not so busy!

I have extremely bad times dealing with anxiety issues in real life. Spiral Knights is a great escape from that because I can just sort of zone out and play and not have to think about all the things that might be weighing me down in a given day. It's fun and relaxing for me, though definitely not NECESSARY for me to get through life. (I have other ways to cope, too, don't worry friends.)

I play the game because I love it for what it is. A cutesy hack'n'slash that plays a lot like Zelda: Four Swords. It's all I really want.

There are times when I grow bored of it, but I never find myself saying "Wow I really don't like this game why do I like it". I may go off and do other things for a while, yet that doesn't affect how much I like this game. Whether it's futzing around with the market, chatting idly with friends, playing Lockdown, I always find something relaxing and fun to do. With each upcoming update, I always anticipate the next big content update. Sure, I'm disappointed when I see nothing I've hoped for. But it doesn't change the fact that I still love the game for what it is. Even with all the questionable balance changes, and peculiar decisions on part of the developers, my enjoyment of the game hasn't lessened.

If anything, I enjoy the game more now than I did then.

It all depends on who you are.

People who are sick of these strings of promos will definitely think it's possible to quit the game.
People who think this is a sort of fun game will quit once they finish the game.
People who really love this game will never quit, for them, the fun never ends.
People who pay for this game have swaying opinions on the game, if they truly believe OOO is doing the right thing, they'll support them with money. These are the people who usually say they're quitting, and then come back, although some quit for good.

In the end, it all really depends on you and what you think of the game. Consider factors like how often you play the game. If it's consuming a lot of your days, chances are you should either cut down on playing, or quit for good.

This game is like like the crazy ex girlfriend that you can't stop thinking about. Or maybe like drugs. Y'know, if they didn't slowly turn you into a vegetable.

You don't know why, but you just love the game, you love it for what it is, not what it want's to be.
There are ups and downs, but, no doubt the pros outweigh the cons. The experiences from the past keep you coming back, wanting to relive those experiences, but, sadly, you cannot recreate old memories. But, you create new ones. Great new ones. I've only been playing this game and been apart of this community for about a year now. And i must say, this place is like some kinda rollercoaster ride that never ends. (The ride never ends). We've got people who share the same opinion, people who have different opinions but work it out. Then you've got people at each others throats, constantly pooping on each other. Hell, this place is like high school all over again with the amount of drama that gets passed around. Heh. Now of course this isn't meant as an insult.. eh. Never mind. i'm not explaining myself. You get offended, *shrugs* Can't please everyone, so just try to please yourself that's what i always say.

I'm just strolling off topic aren't i? that wasn't even about the game. gg me. it's too late, too lazy to backspace.
Basically, this game may have it's flaws, but its great. There have been some changes that i do NOT agree with, but eh, what do i know, im the consumer. Don't know much about marketing or anything like that.

I could delete this game easily, never come back. But, i'll just miss the game, since for some reason, it's so dang fun. Even grinding for hours has some kinda appeal to it for some reason :p

So yeah, i've been trying to cram playing games i enjoy after graduating, since i may not have much time left to enjoy adolescence. It kinda sucks but meh. It'll work out.

TL;DR: this game is great for what it is. What the game does it does correctly, the F2P model is ok, could be improved, but again, what do i know. This game still has that potential to be a true masterpiece. If OOO plays their cards right, we may actually see it come 2015. crossing fingers for that miracle.

And, no. i wouldn't be able to. i can take long breaks, but.. i can't ive tried, just cant.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

/e is forever alone.

There are so many memories embedded in this game for me. I began playing the beta (from my bro's invite) not long after the closed beta of Lego Universe closed. (Which I played. On my bro's account. My bro has the magic touch and gets into literally every closed beta he signs up for.) Spiral Knights was my second MMO I ever played, and the first one I played the released version of. I've loved it...

...so many wiki edits. It's hard to say if I can stop.

Sometimes I want to. When I try, I feel like I'm dropping memories. Maybe I don't find time to play lately, but it's always relaxing and fun. (Heck, challenging sometimes!)

I guess I could stop if I had to, but I'd rather not.

As for for the answer, yeah I probably couldn't. I like many others invested a looooot of time into this game. As such its not something to easily walk away from. Its gonna take something big for me to stop playing. Idk, life stuff.

But I still have many things I need to accomplish in this game. An example is unboxing something like aura and spam trade requests to merchants.

Hi. you have stumbled on my "im leaving" post.

"Could you quit Spiral Knights if you wanted to?"

Answer: Yes

Long answer: Don't touch your account, delete all avatars on account(s), play other games/do something (breathe).

This games difficulty curve is well...non existent (at least to me). Joined random guilds just cause (though I do remember "West-tex-mex" and "addy" (see above). Didn't type much (even tells and g. chat). I got interested in the game because I saw my nephew (jmtheawesome) playing. Now it's 4 years later and I, a long time fan of rhythm games, saw Osu!. (No one plays :(

Too long didnt read: Thar b wurd. Don't look you will go blind

I would've quit long ago if

I would've quit long ago if it wasn't for lockdown. Yeah the main game can still be fun sometimes but I don't need to play it any more and I consider it a waste of my time now (strictly speaking lockdown is a waste of time too that's all games I guess).

I think if a game is causing you that much concern then you should really attempt to take a step back and re-evaluate your gaming habits, because even if the game isn't living up to your expectations you shouldn't be investing so much of yourself into what is really just a way to pass the time. Play for the potential social aspects and whatever goals and challenges you can find within what is currently offered.

I think that to NOT "quit" a game is unhealthy. Even MMOs have a lifespan and its unreasonable to expect them to entertain you indefinitely. This game has reached maturity and I expect OOO will never come up with any update that will fundamentally rejuvenate the game for older players. Whatever they have planned in the way of clockworks updates or missions I hope its something fresh and exciting though, and that they find a way to bring it to us before we all die of old age.

To sum up everyone's responses in the past, present, and future to this thrrad:

Yeah I can quit, but I am still playing.

Which i totally agree with. This is the perfect casual game, very social and fun, and very impressive especially due o the small development team.

I play this mainly, and a pure PvP game if I am in the mood to just snipe everyone with a railgun.

SK would be SICK if they teamed up with freerangegames....

Whimsicality

Whimsicality perfectly expressed my attitude, and the attitude that all players should have: The game is adorable and fun. Don't take it too seriously. When you get bored, don't melodramatically delete your stuff and quit. Just go off and do something else. When you feel like playing again, return and have some fun. Feel free to let Three Rings know that equipment is unbalanced, new content is wanted, and reskins are unwanted, but don't get enraged.

I sympathize with players who are addicted --- especially since Three Rings has installed elements (such as the prize wheel) that closely resemble gambling. I hope that such players can get some help. Addictions can destroy your life, truly.

Ragequits and Sunk Costs

When you get bored, don't melodramatically delete your stuff and quit. Just go off and do something else. When you feel like playing again, return and have some fun.

However, if you feel that you've gained an unhealthy relationship with the game (that is, you sacrifice your outside life for the sake of the game), doing something dramatic like that might be enough to get you to refocus your priority.

I started playing SK with friends (hesitantly, because I can get addicted to MMOs) in 2011, but after my grades fell, I decided that I needed to prune games out to focus on getting my grades back up, so (in the middle of an epic 200kcr/day profit plan to farm BN and Mod Calibrators back when they were fresh), I ragequit and gave away my money/items/energy to cripple my desire to play again. I came back the next year when things had cooled down school-wise, long after that new Lockdown thing was added, and eventually got into Lockdown as my primary experience in SK. Playing with other people gives the most unpredictable and engaging experiences to me, so it melds with my interest in games.

------

Now, the main things that really keep me coming back is the 'subscription' of slots - I need to play a couple of rounds of FSC to raise money for more slots, and I play LD to not make the slots a waste.

It's a different psychological trick to keep me playing over the month, but at least on the short term, my commitment to the game comes in ~8 minute intervals rather than the hour+ long energy-eating expeditions that we used to have, so when I'm done with a round, I can just say "ggs" and leave.

As for quitting period, I suppose if I get bored with the game or find something catchier, I can leave. I ghosted with very little ripple recently due to a vacation, so I'm not particularly tied to the community anymore (though it was nice to see familiar names when I logged back on). I've switched my attention to other games without touching SK for weeks, so it's just a matter of finding a different thing to do with your spare time.

I don't feel like I get this question - If I wanted to quit, I would quit. If I "wanted to but couldn't", that would just be thinking about quitting and deciding not to. That said, if I were to decide to step away from the game I would never delete my account - no point of it, and I might always want to come back.

Tenkii and Klipik-Forum

Tenkii, I was portraying the healthy (not addicted) player. Plenty of healthy gamers quit because they are bored or upset. Just see post #24. I agree that an unhealthy, addicted player may need to take dramatic steps, including deleting his account.

Klipik-Forum, we're talking about people who can no longer control themselves --- people who do not act in their own best interests. When they are thinking clearly, they want to quit. But then they cannot actually make themselves quit. That's addiction.

I haven't "played" SK in a long time, or log on for that matter. I feel honestly exhausted from this game, like not even content will help; I used up all of my possible brain cells on this game.
I just look at the forums and look up stuff about it, and I haven't actually logged on to the game. Yet I keep on looking at forums time and time again. Do I just want to be entertained by the chatter? ?_?;
I can't tell if I'm just waiting for new content or not; my first instinct when seeing the promo isn't really to log on.

A fast can do ya good

After playing nearly every day for two years, I took a rest of biblical proportions, literally - 40 days.

I came back appreciating the game more and with a better mental perspective on it.

Yes, I could certainly quit, but what keeps me playing?

The mechanics, visuals (both the character designs and the overhead views with WASD movements), music, guild I manage, and level of gears and costumes I've obtained. I can still die in danger missions and shadow lairs, so it's still fun and challenging and never the same twice. It's fun to help newer players and contribute to the forums.

Bascially ever other game I've tried loooks like every other game I've tried with the same unsatisfying views and mechanics. The only other games I play are the card games and arcade style ones at Royal Games.

So I don't see myself quitting SK any time soon.

Im Here With Purpose

it has been 3 long years... and what i said above heasent changed.

i started off as a lone soul fighting my way trough... but no game has offered me so much as this one.
it took me few months to reach the ranks of the vaguard.. i still remember my partner the very first day we have defeated vanaduke and claimed our titules of vanguard, with no Woulvers, Blitz.. just us and our determination. he asked me how does it feal now that we reached the end... what will i do now?
i answered him that i have much more to do, i am not done yet...

for thise 3 years i have formed a guild... chose selected few, player after player i have trained, helped, took care off and made them into decent players. they became my friends, great people, we went trough both game and life problems. i was and still am their mentor, helping in any way i can.. you see i was alone when i started, and i am giving those that deserve, the help i never had.
i didnt earn my 3000 hours over 3 years by being idle in haven, every person, every single one of them went trough my hands, became my friend, and left a scar in one way or another i will remember them by.
i invested my time, my resources and i dedicated thise 3 years to makeing spiral knights a better place for those that came across me... i never had enemys and i stood up for all those by my side.
I cant, and i WILL not quit.. no mather how much my life changes me, no mather what happend. there are people that still need me, and there are many out there that i hope to meet.

this game.. has left too many memories to be forgoten just like that... too much time and work has been spent to be ignored....
i wont give up that easyly.... besides...
im still waiting for my Purple Spiral...

To all my Friends, Knights, People on thise forums.. those that i like, dislike, work with and respect... and ofcorse the OOO...
You have My word.
This is My world, Cradle.
and i am not going anywhere.

Yes

It wasnt the string of pointless promos that turned me away, it was the horrendous forge crystals shenanigans that forced me to quit (a point screamed to the sky at the time) and after the rarity of radiant crystals became ridiculous, I just dropped the game cold turkey, even after spending over a thousand hours on the game.

The thing that attracted me to the game, the cutesey style and unique gameplay are -mostly- still there, it's just that many MANY other things have been spoiling the experience for me, to the point I left the game for a good while (I think the last time I played was in November, checking in every few months). In fact, I logged in to check if the gunner update had been made (you know, that magical balance patch that was promised LAST YEAR?). So yeah...

So you quit because now they made a different, similarly time required version of farming while removing elevator limits, making Arcade actually feasible for T3 runs, and drastically reducing a new player's amount of time needed to run levels for crowns??

@Sandwich-Potato

>similarly time required version of farming

They are so different they cant be compared at all. If before you were only limited by the FREE 100 mist you made a day, so 10 levels more or less if you didnt die, or 2 FSC runs, you could level up a 5* weapon in 2 days from 1 to 10 without problems and you made enough crowns to buy ce to run more levels if you want (imo, such limit made the game much more long lived and not as frustrated since you werent stopped every 3 floors to level a weapon ONE level and only if you had the necessary crystals).

The mist system favors missions and focused play, heat crystals favor arcade runs and are much more time consuming if you get unlucky with the crystal drops. Which is my main problem with the heat system: you took away the energy limit but a replacement that requires much much MUCH more grind and time. Compare the time you could level a 5* weapon on the mist system to now with the forge system. THAT'S my main problem with the system, enough to quit - if I wanted to pointlessly grind for possible rewards, I'd play Warframe.

>Arcade actually feasible for T3 runs

They always were, you just needed skill to pull it off, but now they are REQUIRED to level up something at not frozen molasses pace.

> drastically reducing a new player's amount of time needed to run levels for crowns

But that also increased the cost of the main things you used crowns for: buying CE. And then people were making so many crowns, the output had to be nerfed all over the board. I will say this, it made guild hall upkeep much more manageable, specially after the upkeep rate was balanced.

All in all, the change made it clear the direction the game was taking: classic f2p were insane grinding was required, but here, you couldnt bypass it with money unless you were willing to throw hundreds of dollars on CE to buy heat crystals with. THAT what was made me quit.

So I'm able to log on, but that's pretty much it. I guess fate was like, "oh! He's saying he wants to quit, let's answer this cry of his rather than giving him his other cry for a million dollars!" No idea

I have put so much time into this game, of course not as much as others, but it is enough. I have spent money on this game for boxes, etc. (I would like to add that boxes are bs now a days). I still have much to accomplish like becoming as rich as El-Springer, but that will never happen. OOO has just been pulling a lot of crap, we want a gunner update when you say, not after everyone goes on a 9 month long vacation to free money land. And don't get me started on how unbalanced LD is.
In the gist of things, spiral knights still has a ton of issues to sort out, I myself wouldn't quit tell I feel accomplished and complete, but while that's happening, I would like OOO to fix the game...

Could I stop playing and never play again?

Yes.

Do I want to do that?

No.

Explanation: I'm fond of the game, and I would never want to stop. Although I know there will be some point in my existence, that I stop playing this game. Why? Because I'll be gone. Maybe they will have spiral knights server where I go. Though I doubt it. What would it be called? We have the asian servers, would 'afterlife' servers exist? Well, it depends what you believe, but I personally think that... no, once I die, I will not play spiral knights EVER again.

So in an answer: Whether I like it or not, once I die, I will have quit spiral knights. I wonder what will happen to my character...

my 2 cents

I left SK a long time ago. In November, when Nick left and I saw the gunner update wasn't gonna come soon. I just have too much stuff and friends to never come back. But I don't play the game anymore, I have like 2 hours playtime over the last month?

It's just like D2... my lvl 99 light sorc is still alive after 6 years! I just can't let them go, sadly some of my char got deleted but my main powerful one are alive ^ ^

No way...

It's just too cute.

I think with alot of people though, they've just invested too much time and money into the game to want to give it up.

Well sure.

I left over a year ago. I'm only checking this forum now because I've run out of things to do and it is quite early in the morning. I figured I'd see how the game is doing.

So my answer is: I can, and have.

I don't think I'd be able to, I just love the game and the community so much. I'll be gone for three weeks in four days, so I'll see if I have urges to play SK and perhaps develop a better answer.
And when it comes to college...I better be able to focus on work and not SK.

Unique Game!

Currently I am taking a short break from Spiral Knights. However I see no reason to quit forever and I want to return soon. The game feels different then other mmos and the unique game play keeps me playing. Could I quit? Yes I could but I just don't feel like quitting.

Reasons Why I Stay:
- I am a Guild Leader
- My friends are here
- Fun game with some unique features
- Not many interesting mmos out there

Reasons to Quit:
- No major reasons to quit in my current position

Absolutely. If I don't want to play, I won't. This applies to everything, always. I, like the rest of you, grow bored over time. Some grow bored faster than others. And some just stick with it until their patience runs out.

But if I'm having fun, I don't want to stop playing. You ask, "could you quit if you wanted to?" The answer is, yes. Do I want to? No. I want to stick around and see what happens. If I do reach that point where I just want to give up on this game and move on, I will. But hopefully it won't come to that.
