Some things in the game have a direct connection to a country in the real world. For example, the Lionheart Honor Blade is connected to Great Britain's King Richard. Gunslinger gear references the USA’s cowboy culture of the 19th century, as does the Argent Peacemaker gun owned by Wild Bill Hickok.

There are also two items (well, more really since one of them has different versions) that have a direct connection to Japan.

The first is the maedate accessory .

The various maedate became a standard feature on the samurai kabuto war helmets.

It was the samurai who created the guiding principles of honor, duty to one's master, and loyalty unto death that came to be known as bushidō. The samurai were the ruling class and, therefore, were less than 10% of Japan's population.

However, bushido continues to be part of modern Japanese life in both the corporate world and martial arts such as judo, kendo, and karate. The samurai were also well-educated, so after the samurai period ended in the mid 1800’s, some became the literary force in Japan and naturals for government office.

The militarized era of the samurai is full of heroism and tragedy and a favorite movie genre, but I personally view it as rather a dark time in the history of these islands.

The second connection is, of course, the Costume shogun helmets found in the original heavy reddish, as well as the new bright red raging version and shiny golden storm versions.

All three are equipped with the requisite maedate.

A shogun was like a local king. They were really generals who had to answer to the Imperial court, but the court’s power was mainly symbolic rather than military. Therefore, the shogun were the de facto rulers in Japan.

What other things in the game are connected to a real country?

P.S. If you’d like to read more about Japan, you can check out my Life in Japan thread in Gremlin Chatter.

From the wiki:
-Troika is a Russian dance, where a man dances with two women. The word's general meaning is three of a kind, also in Russian.
-The Kamarin's description refers to one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's lines in Conan the Barbarian.
-Khorovod (Russian: Хоровод) is actually reference to a Russian form of circle dance and chorus singing, similar to Chorea of ancient Greece.
-Grintovec is named after the highest mountain in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps in north Slovenia.
-Jalovec is named after a mountain in the Julian Alps. Jalovec is the sixth-highest peak in Slovenia.
-Triglav is the tallest mountain in Slovenia, which was most probably named after the Slavic god Triglav.

Here is one

The Acheron is a sword styled to look like a Katana.

"Acheron" is a river found in Greece. In Greek mythology the river is heavily attributed with the underworld.

Shogun helmets

I am going to be a critic on the shogun helm... A shogun didn't wear that exact helmet all the time, too bad they named it that. A shogun was a military ruler who had no other military rulers (or warlord from other clans) because he had conquered them all or there was none. The shogun era ended when Commador Mathew Perry chugged 4 steam powered warships from the United States and asked the shut down (they didn't allow anyone in or out) country of Japan to let US military sailors use their ports. Japan reopened itself to the world after they saw what improvements every other country had made... now tons of people visit Japan all the time.

If a troika is a Russian

If a troika is a Russian dance involving a man and two women. Why make a sword out of it? The troika is a sword where you crush anything in your way.

This might be wrong, but...

I think Och is a little bit of a reference to the battle of Normandy (It has other names, although it just makes me shudder...).

I mean, you are coming in, fighting your way through... and those breakable blocks... I forgot their name.

at risk of necro

I'm going to necro this thread, not to troll, but because I have an important announcement to make. (It's important in that we've had many threads like this over the years, so people seem interested in this topic.)

In many cases, we wiki editors have been listing out-of-game references at List of References and at the individual page (e.g. Acheron). This practice has been inefficient and error-prone. After discussion in the Wiki Editors forum, it has been decided to replace List of References with Category:Allusions. From this page, readers can link to every out-of-game reference on the wiki.

We have about 41 pages tagged so far. If you want to help collect allusions, then
1. Explain your allusion, preferably with a link to something like Wikipedia, in the Notes section of the relevant wiki page.
2. Place [[Category:Allusions]] at the bottom of the wiki page, to put it into that category for all to see.
Thanks, and enjoy.
