If OOO put them up as just a stand alone item, where you would directly pay to receive the item, would you go for it?
If you could pay 20 dollars to get the wings of summer/winter, would you?
Personally, no. I regularly spend $20 on the game (usually once per promo actually, now that I have income), but not on a single item. But yeah, I definitely know a lot of people would gladly spend that kind of money on one cosmetic item. When I sold one of my rarer accessories, the buyer had to wait for $70 to process through Steam before they could actually purchase the energy to trade to me.
It just makes me think of the Supply Depot Flash Sales though, but cutting out energy entirely. Which is kind of a bummer but would leave free-to-play people out, at least until somebody popped one of those on the AH. Either way, fewer people could straight-up buy 'em. :c
i would, i would even pay around 50 usd or more for the dreadful aura, actually im starting to save some money to buy tons of TF2 key so i can sell them for some Ce and get the dreadful aura (im planning to pay around 150k Ce for one it just matter of time i gather that).
So yeah if you ask if i would pay some bucks to get the rare accesories: yes i would
No thanks. I'd rather buy 20$ worth of boxes. And just sell em. They don't match anything i have anyways.
Interesting to see why people would/wouldn't buy them at this price, considering that right now in order to attain the item with 95% certainty it would take around 300 prize boxes; or around 1000$.
More estimates from my friend the online binomial stats calculator:
100$ = ~24% chance of finding one or more of the items.
20$ = ~4.9% chance of getting the big thing
(This assumes that you just bought boxes to get the items and opened them repeatedly, no selling the contents etc. It also assumes that there is exactly 1% on the boxes. So these numbers aren't 100% accurate by any means, but they are 100% in the ballpark of what's going on here.)

@Addy
It totally wouldn't cut out the F2Pers any more than they are already taken advantage of. If the price of the item in game outweighs the price of the item from OOO directly, then ANYONE buying energy intelligently would want to purchase the item and give it to the free to players.
From the P2Per's perspective:
X $ = However much boring regular energy
OR
X $ = Heavenly Celestic Dragon Box Of Summer Guardian Trunks
However! Heavenly Prize Trunk Summer Box = A larger amount of energy when sold; Pizza energy.
I recall seeing boxes going for 4,000 energy after one of the many recent updates. These boxes are not worth 4,000 energy, they're worth closer to 1,600 energy... but because free to play players were willing to purchase them, people bought the boxes for them and traded it to them. While exploiting them, of course.
Black Kat Cowls.
I don't really know how to respond to that since I kind of said in my post that it was pretty hard for F2P players to obtain these items as it is, and you just acknowledged that the price was super jacked up from what it should be. Sooo. Yeah. That's what I was getting at. If they straight up sold wings for $19.99, people would likely charge $40+ in CE while reselling. Leaving F2P players in the dust without paying outrageous prices. (I'd be all for an actual accessory shop where like Kozma or a new NPC sold accessory tickets for CE, though, like a permanent supply depot sale, even? This way people can pay for them if they want but free players are still able to get them at reasonable prices.)
Regardless, I (personally) hate spending more than $10 on ONE digital item at a time. Including games! (Mostly because nearly every time I spend $15-20 I end up being completely unable to run them, hahah... but that's another story.) I am okay with a $20 pack of boxes because I'm technically getting five things, and I like the little thrill of opening 'em, too. :3 I don't count on getting anything huge but the "what if" makes it kind of worth it to me. But again, that's just my own personal preferences. I don't think badly of those who spend $60+ on a single item or game or w/e, I'm just used to getting burned by system requirements or something. -_-
Also being as poor as I am IRL, $20 on a single cosmetic item is much harder to justify. I guess if I had that kind of disposable income, though, I'd be more open to the idea.
I could see them releasing a new DLC pack, not unlike the Guardian Armor Pack "currently $39.99 in Steam" that contained the two new wings and various other goodies.
no really... this could ruined some people life and sk economy
think about people who already spend 300-500 buck for the box to get these wings and what they will do if this 20$ wings come after they already give all money they can spend for game? me, my friend, and all those buck spender going to stop give buck (some maybe still) if we found out that OOO trolled us -_-'
i would agree if this come before the box exist in sk world, but the price should be more higher than that to prevent economy fail.
im not saying this because i on p2w side.. but vip person or rich people should have at least something they can proud of or they will not.. (eh you know what i mean~)
If OOO putting a cosmetic item up for $20 ruined someone's life-- it didn't actually ruin their life in the first place, because if it did they never had a life.
actually not ruined life but i like to write like that~
some people are going to ragequit or even take revenge to this game(people who spend $300-500+ to get wings) if $20 wings come after they already try luck on box with 1% chance to get these wings...
I'd drop twenty dollars on this game for some sweet wings pretty much as soon as I could run by best buy and grab a steam wallet card lol.
Of course OOO makes more money by getting people to gamble, or at least I'm pretty sure they do... I hope they make enough to hire a new programmer that might speed up the development times on there projects... not that I know too much about what goes on at OOO's HQ
"think about people who already spend 300-500 buck"
OOO has made it very clear where they stand on those people, and they do not stand by them. All of the old promotions are game, the wings and hacked auras and basically all that there is to get are all game and could be sold to you at any moment should OOO be so inclined. Think of the box two years ago, that contained everything BUT the wings. OOO didn't pay any mind to the people that invested in that when they re-released the exact box but with the new wings added in.
I meant this thread with disregard to that qualm anyway. Presume instead that they were made available from the start like that.
Why yes, I would.
In reality its most likely going to cost that much when it shows up on the supply de_ot sale so wynaut? Also its a big chance to give a giant stubby vanaduke finger to ex_loiting merchants.
Three Rings has never made any promise that they'd never re-release promotional content that I've seen, and they do it pretty sparingly anyway. But as Blazz said, it's less to do with being AGAINST the people who spend $300+ on the game and more to do with making this sort of content available to as many players as possible. Yeah, free to play players don't need these specific costume pieces, but when a only a few people are sitting on piles of accessories and selling them only at extreme prices, re-releasing a box gives players a chance to get those items for themselves.
Additionally the recycled promo box is still a box where you have a 70% chance for a UV ticket, so I don't actually see this promo completely destroying the value of these items. Yeah, they'll take a dip, but that's also largely because panicked hoarders are dropping what they have before the value gets too low, ironically, destroying the value of their own items.
If they were up for 20 dollars so many players will get it that those wings aren't gonna be worth anything anymore. It's literally the same as the flash sales (oh poor merchants)
I like rare things and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with me
Merchants will be raging all over again
Someone paid 500 bucks for the Iron dragon wings during the sale, so I would assume a bunch of people would pay the 20 bucks happily, beats buying 20 boxes and hoping you get lucky with RNG.
