There are a few things.

It could be your router. Try directly connecting to your cable modem.

It could be some program(s) you have running in the background.

It could be your ISP giving you a throttled pipe from time to time.

It's hard to say. Can you give us more information, like what happens when you...
a. connect straight to the modem and cut out the routers for a while?
b. Ping www.google.com for about ten minutes and look at the report?
c. Tell us what OS and any background processes, like a virus scanner or torrent client, are running?

Start>run>CMD to bring up a terminal.

Just type
ping -t www.google.com
in a terminal, then wait ten minutes, then hit Ctrl+C to kill ping. It should give you usage statistics and exit. Scroll backwards through the log, and see if the time to loop is pretty consistent, or if it also spikes. This is best done without a router in the way, to confirm that it's not actually a router issue.

That's without a router, right?

Sounds like there's a connectivity problem. It could be your ISP, or just something to do with whatever you were plugged into. I'd suggest contacting your ISP for support, assuming you weren't plugged into any kind of router.

Son, your ping is

Son, your ping is terrible.
What happened when you plugged your computer directly into your modem, like Niramu suggested?
Also, did you already try the troubleshooting suggestions here:http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/48
