LD with a Gamepad

Heyo! I'm not a huge LD player but in the few times where I have played, I've noticed that my use of a gamepad can be somewhat detrimental to me, what with the no quick/careful turns, slight difficulty aiming a gun, etc. And so I was looking for tips or advice, I guess? I saw that some of the top LD players actually DO use gamepads (though not many) and I was curious about any sort of advice or setups or something. Not auto-target though, ahah.

(Please note that I do not have a mouse or the means of getting a mouse currently. I use a gamepad because this is what's available to me.)

I have no clue how the hell some people can pull off the use of a gamepad, but it does allow for full Analog control just like a Mouse cursor would, so that's something. I tried using a gamepad myself and I can't seem to get a grip of it.

My default control scheme makes use of the Arrow Keys and ZXCV. Up for Face North and Move North, Left for Face West and Move West, etc. Z for attack, X for defend, c to Strafe, and V to dodge.

I guess I could be considered one of the better gamepad players, since the only one I've seen do better is Retequizzle.
He'll probably respond on this anyway.

Control scheme:

Left analog: movement. Map the N-E-S-W controls, not the relative ones.
Right analog: direction you look in. Same caveat as above.
RB: attack
LB: defend
RT: next weapon
LT: previous weapon. As you might notice, yes this only allows for 3 weapons.
Dash: can be either R3 (push in right stick) or one of the ABXY buttons.

Aiming a gun is, and always will be harder than with a mouse but as with all things practice makes it manageable.
For general movement: try facing the same direction you're running in at first, before you go all fancy and strafe backwards etc.

Here's my scheme, using a Dualshock 4 which beats the Xbox 360 controller by three and a half long shots, if you ask me.

Left stick: movement
Right stick: direction
RT: attack
LT: defend
LB: modifier
RB: toggle AT
Face buttons: weapons
Modifier+RT: dash
Modifier+O (B on an Xbox 360 pad): toggle map

I have some other bindings which I won't list because they're irrelevant to PvP and are only used with sprites/real shields.

Anyway, you could probably throw the dash on something else, like clicking a stick. Same goes for map toggle. If you don't use four weapons, you could use a face button or two for those actions.

As for tips on playing...
Hitting with small range swords will not be easy. Either try wider ones like Toothpicks and Sealed Swords, or enable AT. That, or learn to aim like an MLG pro such as Feyi or Rete.
Guns are definitely even harder to use with gamepads. The most beginner friendly ones are Pulsars and Valiance. Due to the large hitboxes and three shot clips, you can learn to lead shots properly at least with the latter. Once you've had enough practice, you could begin trying Alchemers. They have a bit lower bullet speed and a smaller clip so you'll cover a much smaller area. Still, the idea is the same. You just need lots of practice.
Bombing is probably the easiest thing for gamepad players because there's no aiming involved while you're also given the advantage of analogue movement.

Make sure to know your strengths and weaknesses as a gamepad player. You'll be able to move with much greater grace than any WASD+mouse player if you learn to use the sticks both synchronous and asynchronous. It will in turn allow for better use of boost and thus generally better performance in combat.

A few examples of good gamepad players:

  • Feyi
  • Retequizzle
  • Glacies
  • Zeddy
  • Krakob

I think Monsterdestroyer plays with gamepad but I am not at all sure about that, really.

@Jumamiza

It's not a cross and a square. It's an X and a box.

I disagree, a box is three dimensional!

The box? I thought Luguiru was six-dimensional.

aaaa sorry, I forgot about

aaaa sorry, I forgot about this thread! Thanks for all the advice guys. I shooould probably remap my control scheme to be like what you guys use and I have actually been thinking about it for a while, but I fear change ahaha. (Also it can be frustrating going from "pretty decent" to "poop," but learning curves I guess.)

After the Apocrea event I'll make it a point to give that sort of setup a real shot.
