Here are some more intreresting facts!
Departure is the Core! If you look at the gate map you will see it is at depth 30. So inside the Core is actually just a bunch of trapped souls, Corruption, and Slender Worshipers!
Also, those Knights you are going in to rescue are the Alpha Squad! Everyone is there. The Leader, the Technician, the Recon, and the Guardian! Everyone dead, their souls eaten by the Core we are here to take with us on board a giant ship to our home planet.

Yeah, if you open the pop-out map you can see the whole level even though it's not accessible.
