how to get rich
Grind event items and stockpile them, next time the event comes back sell them at the first day when the demand is high, but the supply isn't.
Or wait for Steam promos and buy the items cheap (with other game currency stuff, like TF2's) from people who doesn't play, doesn't care about SK, and put them up on the AH.
So yeah, you can't get rich by playing, only by using the economy.
Kill lots of things, get about 2500 energy, and start playing the energy market. If you do it right, you should be able to gain 1kE in a week. Rinse and repeat.
Exploit the market and economy, as Tutajkk said.
You can either play the game, or you can play the market... depending on how rich you mean by rich.
If you just want money and rarities to spend, play the game and you'll get it. Its not hard to get crowns or even rarities (outside of a certain fire crystal) now that elevators are free. Grinding for radiants will stop you at this, but you can hunt arenas etc. and get them at a very sluggish and dull rate until you eventually quit the game out of boredom and lust for new items.
If you want to like, take over cradle and become the best like no one ever was, you'll need to pay a large sum of money into the game and then follow legitimate investment strategies religiously. This isn't nearly as fun or exciting unless you just really like large numbers. You would hypothetically never want to buy costume items or other goodies to use doing this, as you would always want to make the most crowns back from your investments.

That's pretty much it, except for the large sum of money into the game. That's blatantly false, P2P players are rich but nowhere near as rich as F2P players investing well. Not buying costumes has got to be the #1 rule to becoming rich.
No, you don't need to pay up to become somewhat rich, but there is a clear difference between someone paying 50 dollars per promotion and someone paying zilch, even when both are investing all of it. If OP wants to be the richest knight, he'll have to pay. If he wants to be sorta rich, but get beaten out by all of the P2Pers, then sure, he can just invest.
Especially at first, when you don't have millions to invest in things-- its the difference between investing 100K to buy maybe, 2 items... and just flat out starting with 14 prize boxes.
100K = 2 items or so at the best possible time to buy those two items, right?
14 prize boxes = 4K energy at the start of the event = 56,000 energy = 3.64 mill. You could jump straight from that 100K you ground to buying several dozen books, rage pieces, tails, wings, you name it. But it gets better- next promotion, you get even more from nothing, and do the same thing. This means that you didn't have to sell the original set of items, and can now wait even longer to sell them at the opportune moment, which you don't even care when is. The only way for them to be a loss would be for OOO to make a reliable source of them. Chances are, that they'll make something like say... a golden wolf coat. All of the sudden, those storm boxes you bought sold and then bought more of are going to sell like hotcakes.
If OP invests several thousand dollars into the game, then he will have a legitimate shot at becoming the next Bill Gates of Spiral Knights. If he does not, then he will have a much slower time than if he dumps all of his life's savings in there. But yes, it is definitely possible to become "rich" without investment. You'll just not become the wealthiest ever.
I feel like those players spending thousands can be disregarded, there's so few of them. I'd say with merchanting there's a rather steep curve but once you reach your first 10k E you can start making some good profit on a regular basis.
I know that personally I've reached a worth far superior to the 1000's of $ this way, I would need to know how much really some players (not gonna name) spend on this game, just for curiosity's and comparing's sake.
TF2 market is exponentially better than any way to make money in SK. Buy TF2 items with CE, sell the TF2 items for overpay, and once you have a key, sell it back and repeat. I went from 500 CE to 120,000 in about exactly a month. Used a couple keys I had from a day's profit and unboxed a 80k CE unusual hat. I stopped trading after that month because I felt comfortable with the level I was at. To do this you need to be proficient in math, calculating cross-currency values, and calculating if you can actually make money off a trade. As a disclaimer, to build up to my first 5k CE or so, it wasn't entirely with TF2 items. It was still all done through trading though.
Here's a link to my TF2 backpack, which i use for a bank if low on CE. Look at March-April to see the trading I did. http://backpack.tf/profiles/76561198068417218
Welcome to the best adventure game on the web. And it’s free! In game wealth allows you to enjoy the game even more, so how can you gain it in a way that is both efficient and fun?
First, I strongly recommend that you make at least a one-time purchase of energy with real money, preferably during a promotional event when you’ll get bonus goodies and better deals. Although it’s not necessary, it will help you to accomplish many things at a much faster pace, and frankly, Three Rings deserves some financial compensation and support for this wonderful game.
The best way to gain wealth is to play, and the best levels to play first are the rank missions for both the knowledge and rewards they provide. (Joining a guild may help you to meet players who can assist with these missions.) During the course of play, you will acquire materials and crowns. You may choose to sell some of your materials for crowns in the auction house or to other players directly; however, bear in mind that you will need many of these materials to craft better gear later on. It is best to use your wealth to buy recipes for 2* gear. After you have gained access to tier 2, begin buying recipes from the Basil vendor at level 13 or in the Hall of Heroes found in the Rank Missions. Patiently craft up your gear to 4* level and gain access to tier 3.
After you have completed the Prestige Missions, you may choose to replay certain levels such as the Boss missions for fun or the rewards they provide in terms of crowns, heat, materials, and tokens. Firestorm Citadel (FSC or Vana(duke)) is the most profitable but at 5 levels and an extremely hard boss fight, it requires the greatest time commitment and high level gear. The Tier 2 boss missions, Sovereign Slime and Roarmulus Twins, also pay nicely and can be done much quicker and more easily.
Once you have become familiar with the game, you might begin crafting and selling gear gained from boss tokens. You have a knack for merchanting, you may begin to speculate on accessories or costume items, buying low and selling high. This requires a fair amount of wealth and a lot of knowledge and patience.
Keep in mind that all of these methods for gaining wealth are just other aspects of the game. Wealth should not be your goal, but rather whatever awesome gear or accessories you can buy with your wealth. It’s all playing. Be kind and polite to your fellow knights, and please refrain from begging.
To get rich?
Step one: Obtain a chaos set, combuster, electron vortex, Blitz needle, Elite trueshot and slash modules, and a swiftstrike bucker.
Step 2: Heat em.
Step 3: See that mission? King of Ashes? Replace the "h" with an "S" and you'll get a better picture.
Step 4: Farm him. Grind him like a 20 year old girl on the dancefloor!
step 5: Repeat mission. Do about 20 times per day. You'll have acquired richness in no time.
Or just spend real money.
Pay 20$
Buy crappy boxes you don't want.
Sell crappy boxes you don't want for 200k each.
Gain 1 mil.
Flaunt your richness by putting shadow dragon wings on a Skolver coat. Or just mismatching colors like Divine with Toasty/Volcanic. That kinda thing.
The nubs will envy you.
You remember that gremlin you let live the other day?
He ran off talking to other gremlins mentioning how bad he destroyed you and took your lunch money for zee cores.
My advice? Is genocide an answer for you? You can kill off as many of the gremlins as long as the one that badmouthed you is one of them. I hear other stuff that wants to kill you drop their money as well. You should definitely take it too
