Wouldn't the azure set be like joining the army and then being expected to buy your own stuff?

Like if you enlisted and they were like "Here is your official standard issue bullet proof vest! Usable in almost all situations!" and then they hand you a T-shirt with some holes in it and you immediately start to regret everything. You get to the front lines, and they've got like napalm and grenades and god knows what else... so you use your pay check to buy an actual bullet proof vest and maybe some kind of fire extinguisher type thing to deal with the napalm and the rest of the army just kind of goes out and dies. And then they're surprised when you actually accomplish something, and hold a big ceremony.

That's basically what we've got going on, isn't it?

yes also

Yes. Also it is surprising that we cannot share recipes. We're all on the same side, after all.

They sure give you a lot of revives.
That being said, I may have to update the wiki's info on mission rewards because 25 sparks (wiki) is a bit different than 54 (in game).

Lol they do give you a bunch of revives!

That's kind of terrifying, to be honest. Like, they don't care if their soldiers are gravely wounded by everything barring the royal jelly palace, because they can just resurrect you a few times.

The picture of the small knight in cobalt running in the fiend level that's advertised...you know he's gonna die. Just like all the rest that ventured out because apparently the ones that survive have brains or something.

Whenever we're in danger they're ALWAYS going to throw us into the heat of battle because no one can fight a boss except your knight.

And what the [REDACTED] is the recon team doing when we're suppose to team up with them on danger missions? Do they just silently sit there then sneak to the elevator when the sandbags known as us are on the front lines then appear at the last minute only to say "yey we did it!1!!"??

why not give you access to

why not give you access to the red button so you can just nuke the core and get it over with???

they gave you misions, free elevators, forge... and a HELL of a lot more stuff to make it easy...

the only thing i crafted after misions (hell i crafted it to test the forge so WAY after) is a sentenza!

all my other gear i farmed, heated, crafted myself while paying energy for elevators, grinding T2 for god knows how long... not even close to get into FSC and here you are wanting OOO to just hand you 5* gear????

0/5 for troll attempt

also... they gave you proto gear... GTFO

@Kickthebucket

I wasn't trying to troll you.... but I guess it worked? This thread isn't serious at all... just a humorous observation. I mean if you want to win a war you typically want to protect your soldiers and equip them the best you can before dumping them into battle. The army theme is kind of a silly thing that makes very little sense, and when you actually think about it it becomes rather obvious.

Cobalt lines may be why we were losing the Moria wars. Now that we're on Cradle we have access to multiple worlds worth of weaponry.

It's historical

It's historically accurate, anyway. In the US revolutionary war, most soldiers were volunteer local militia. They were expected to have their own guns.

For that matter, George Washington did not believe in a permanent standing army. He refused a permanent commission after the war, returning to his farm at Mount Vernon instead. In his view, states were supposed to call up volunteer militia when needed, and disperse them when they weren't needed. That idea eventually became the idea behind the phrasing of the 2nd Amendment "A well regulated Militia ...". (None of this modern "protection of property" nonsense that the NRA tries to convince us of.)

During the US civil war, it was pretty common to do exactly that. A bunch of locals would often sign up together, forming a company. The wealthiest among them would pay for guns and ammo, and was elected an officer. The wealthier the officer, the better the guns, and the more likely the company was to survive.

I kinda rationalized it by

I kinda rationalized it by thinking about it like this:

Our proto gear could be top of the line on Isora, or at least the only thing we REALLY needed. (Additionally, if we're doing most of the combat in space/spaceships/etc, it isn't necessary to have a lot of good armor on us, just our ships.) Cradle is a mostly unknown, new place, and we've been combining our existing technology with the materials found there with unexpected, new items via Alchemy. It's not really standard anymore but we're scavenging without any real funding at all - we are stranded, after all.

Though I guess the Cobalt line sort of goes against that whole thing too. Idk, notice that they give higher-ranking military members better stuff than the lower-ranked ones, you gotta prove your worth before you can walk around in your 5* Cobalt I guess. It seems somewhat ceremonial so maybe it's considered extraneous anyway.

I spend way too much time trying to put a positive/rational spin on things. v_v

Well, why give a perfectly good 5* set to someone who's never been in combat? The best of the best survive with what they have, they progress, the weak get slaughtered.
You can just think of the players as the only knights on cradle that actually get anything done.
And, The spiral order is saving quite the bundle of cash when you just make your weapons, and they don't even waste money or resources training you! they just tell you what to kill, and you train yourself!

You died? Well, than you probably were not a good soldier, your sparks and weapons have been revoked and now your on dish duty.

Sadface for you.

They have the equipment to help you from the start.

At the start of the game, we see Blitz Needle Mcgee waltz on in with her dragon scale armor and accessory covered friends to crush the lumber miniboss, so we know that they've got some of the technology available from before the war. The existence of The Bitter End, scissor blades and Biscotti's cleaver shows that sudaruska/triglav were also very much around, not to mention the supply depot and hall of heroes exposing exactly what the spiral order has and isn't giving you.

There are the goons now- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V-DQ1Cx3zM#t=195

More importantly, this keeps happening as you progress and prove yourself

When the player starts to make it somewhere in the game, the Spiral Order tries to sell them stuff to succeed, and at best hands the player recipes for mostly 'bad' gear. They could be low on supplies, but that's hardly an excuse considering that the player becomes distinguished and kills whatever big bad comes up several times. Given that their number one goal is to liberate the core, they have no reason not to assist you in every way possible once you've proven yourself.

It's not just you

The elite recon rangers come in wielding......... 2* autoguns. The Spiral Order is selling blitz needles and other 5* gear for a measly 3,500 energy by the end of the game. It makes sense for the cobalt line and default set to be handed out freely to new recruits, but not for the best of the best to be equipped with junky gear.

Okay, I have to ask - what army theme? We're not an army. The Spiral Knights are - surprise, surprise - an order of knights. Y'know, European nobles who went around clobbering the peasants and paid for all their own gear? Honestly, the fact that noblemen could afford their own high-quality gear was the only real difference between knights and other 'professional' soldiers of the time.

Don't you mean, an order of "Spiral" Knights?

Because this game's name is not Knights, Tis Spiral Knights dear Watson

It's not called The-Ones-Who-Came-From-Isora-And-Crashed-On-Cradle-Are Knights either

Wait, perhaps in some random alien language that doesn't exist Spiral means The-Ones-Who-Came-From-Isora-And-Crashed-On-Cradle-Are

This discovery could change lives! How must we handle this? Burn the evidence in a fire!

Well by army theme I mean the bit where there are little turrets and commanders and a set of ranks that go along with everything and the knights bring little barricades everywhere and report to each other constantly, as well as have standard issue gear... you know. We're part of a military operation. The knights were even based on the idea of space marines, and that is how they operate.

that sentence was so full of yes

Also, the nitronome fella has brute jelly armour. they managed to kill enough brute jellies, you know those things that we never see, to make an armour set out of it.

I've always found it odd how the protagonist of most games are simple people armed with nothing but starter gear and manage to overcome some great beast that could have been killed much easier by the npcs hanging around towns etc.

Side note- why the heck haven't they put that improved AI on other knights yet. c'mon, you can give gremlins run away and heal then come back and insta360 AI, why can't we have friends that are half intelligent?

The hall of heroes has not

The hall of heroes has not always been there, and they only sell recipes for equipment. Not only that, but if you think about the updates in the game as a timeline from the first to crash, it makes sense that the first you see would be heavily armored, and you may have just been a stray pod that just now crashed into Cradle. Also, Perhaps when we escaped, we couldn't bring much with us, only what was the bare minimum, that being proto gear. As we get further and further, we face stronger enemies, thus bringing us better materials to make better equipment, the easiest to make being the Cobalt line.

Of course, this is just an idea

Imagine when we bring an acheron back to isora, if proto gear was suffice to defeat the enemies there then I think acheron might split the planet it two if you use the charge attack.

Then again, we apparently nearly got wiped out by the morai wars... what if the things we were fighting in the morai wars are actually really bad, and the spiral knights are a really peaceful race that never developed a military until they had to? That wouldn't explain the knights already having blitz needles though. What if the strangers gave them to us? What if Blitz Needle Mcgee and her accessory covered crew found their gear just lying around in a loot box? Gear drops are apparently possible after all.

WE ARE PROBABLY OVERTHINKING THIS BUT IT'S FUN

THE PLAGUE NEEDLE'S LORE IS WRONG BTW, IT DEFINITELY PIERCES BEFORE IT POISONS.

I just realized something.

Everyone knows the prestige missions to give weapons? Does anyone actually give weapons? If no knight ever gives supplies, how can they give much of anything to new recruits? They have plenty of 0-2* items to hand out, but never any 3-5* because the veterans are too stingy to help out the new recruits.

The prestige missions are to give weapons to knights that lost them because they were captured, not to recruits. You learn this by reading the details of the mission
