By the way, Discussion Thread for questions, comments and critism. If anyone feels I have not portrayed their character as he/she should be portrayed, than let me know in the discussion thread. Thank you.

Prologue: Two years earlier...

"Sir? This is Ruby Delia reporting..."

The tech Knight raised an eyebrow and peered at the young Knight.

"You've been assigned to Iota Squad B-class, as team leader." He said in a bored tone, "A list of your team-mates' names are being sent to your Hard Drive, once you have gotten to your barracks, contact them and they will meet you there."

Then the Tech knight turned back to his monitor and started typing up a report, ignoring the girl. Ruby took in the news, and a feeling of glee spread through her. She's Squad leader! She trained as hard as she could to be selected as a team leader, and now she's done it. Immediately she left the arcade and walked towards the Garrison, trying not to let her excitement show. She entered the building, and doubt's wormed their way into her mind. What if your squad mates are complete jerks? What if they don't listen to anything you say? What if... Ruby shook her head. She can't make expectations before she meets them. She stopped at her locker, the combination lock was instinctive and the metal door squeaked open in seconds. She grabbed her Grand Flourish from its rack and slung the Spiralian Rifle over her shoulder. The act of heaving the backpack off the ground proved to be a little harder than she remembered, and after making three attempts, she got it off the ground and over her shoulder. She grabbed the lock and started off to her new bunk.

• • •

Colin fiddled with a piece of scrap as he lay on the bottom bunk of four beds. The room wasn't big, and the bunks were on either side, taking up most of the space, a carpet lay on the floor, and four desks sat on either side of the beds. All of the rooms are the same in the barracks. He briefly wondered who would walk in first when the doorknob creaked. He pretended not to hear it and looked up only when the person walked in. It was a girl. He sat up and she looked surprised to see someone in the room.

"W-what are you doing here? This is a room reserved for-" She started.

"Iota squad? I know that," Colin slid off the bed and stood up. "Name's Colin, I'm the squad guardian." He held out a hand.

The girl looked taken aback, "I'm Ruby, squad leader, I was told that no one else would be here yet." She shook his hand and continued, "How did you know to come here? I was told to tell everyone to come here. I didn't know any of you would be here yet."

Colin grinned a little guiltily and scratched the back of his head, "I um may have checked the database on future assignments and moved in a little early. He looked at the barrel of a gun poking out from over Ruby's shoulder. " Is that an Spiralian Rifle?" He said quickly, changing the subject.

She nodded, "Yes, it was a gift. Although I can't say its my favorite gun. If you'll excuse me, I need to call the others in." Ruby deposited her things on the bunk on top of his, and tapped out a quick message.

In a couple seconds the message icon popped up in a corner of Colin's HUD.

You are assigned to Iota squad B, please report to the barracks and move your personnel items to room E5.

Squad Leader Ruby Delia,

"Got it." He reported, "Have you heard what the Spiral HQ is doing next?"

"Next? What do you mean?" Came the reply.

"I heard that the HQ is planning a raid on the Gremlin responsible for Project R. " Colin elaborated. "He's known as Warmaster Seerus."

No response. Colin shrugged and went back to fiddling with his scrap metal.

• • •

*Knock* *knock*

Ruby slipped off her bunk and moved to greet the newcomer. She opened the door. Er, make that newcomers. Two knights waited outside the door.

One looked around, before breaking the ice, "Er, is this Iota Squad's barrack?"

Ruby smiled, "Yes, did you receive the letter?"

They nodded, and she stepped back to let them in. As they entered, Colin stood up to greet them. The one who spoke first introduced himself as Isaac, he would be recon. The latter introduced himself as Midnight.

"I'll be striker." He finished.

Ruby surveyed her team, Colin seemed like a good enough guardian. Isaac held himself with enough confidence that told her he would have no trouble in combat. Midnight seemed a little nervous still, but he looked like he could take care of himself

"Well, I think we'll make a great team!" She said, "Anyone up for some training? It will be good to get to know each other's fighting styles."

The others slowly nodded, but didn't move. Being a leader is going to be harder than I thought.

"Come on then! We're wasting daylight!" Ruby ordered, and disappeared out the door.

Galvanized into action, the rest of Iota squad hurried to grab their weapons and followed their new leader out the door.

Chapter 1: Delta squad

Present Time

"Remember," came Carter's voice, "If he sees you, then its over but don't be too careful."

Ash rolled his eyes and ran forward, flattening himself against a crate. Furry feet made a quiet patter on the floor, the gremlin ran through the area. A letter seemed to be rolled up his hand. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a flicker of movement. That'll be Imca, he focused back on the gremlin. It was getting close to a sign of civilization.

Towering above the flat metal floor stood a wall. A small gate cut a hole in the seemingly heavily fortified obstruction. Ash heard someone catch their breath, the gremlin padded sup to the gate and chattered something at a small window. The gate slid open soundlessly, and the messenger disappeared inside. Ash almost stood up to run to the gate, then it was shut.

"Ebony, tell HQ about this thing. Do you think its the great colony itself?" Carter said sizing up the wall.

Ash looked skeptical, "I think this would be an outer city. The main capital would be more heavily fortified."

Imca looked sideways at him, "And this isn't?"

He shrugged, "It might look impressive, but I'm pretty sure its just a wall. Guards probably patrol the top. An aerial attack would be ineffective, unless of course you use a cloaking device."

"HQ says it probably is an outer city, and that we should scout it out a little. Their sending in Omega squad as well. " Ebony interrupted.

Imca held up a grapple, "Climbing?"

Carter nodded.

The wall might be big, but it was metal, and magnets stick to it quite nicely. The four quickly and quietly scaled the flat wall and formed up at the top. Ash held his Valiance out, once again wishing he had his rifle. Carter was leading the advance, Hail driver at the ready. Ebony and Imca covered their backs, Ebony searching for a target with his Umbra Driver, Imca doing the same with her Var. There was a shuffle of movement, and Carter fired the same time Ash did. The gremlin Thwacker lay in frozen pieces with a startled expression. They brushed the shards of ice aside and continued, a watchtower was nearing. Ash's eyes darted around, instantly taking in the inside of the tower.

The inside of the tower rumbled as the wind flowed through and past it. Light vibrations could be heard from marching soldiers below. Carter signaled, and they descended the staircase single file. Ash didn't like confined spaces, the stairs could be rigged. Almost as if on cue, Carter halted so quickly he almost bumped into the squad leader. Kneeling down, Carter uncovered a tripwire. He waved to Ebony, who came to inspect it. Ebony was their technical expert. The guardian got to work on the tripwire, and Ash got antsy.

"I'm going back up to see if the coast us clear. Imca cover them."

She nodded, and he tiptoed back up the steps. The interior widened and Ash stepped out into the Watchtowers main room once again. He looked down one way, no one. He looked the other way.
Not a sign of life.
Sweat lined his brow, this was going to well. Where are they. He scanned the room, and saw a light. He studied it. Was that a-

"The trap is disarmed. Come on." Imca's voice drifted up from the stairway.

"Just a sec, I need to check out something. Moving silently, he approached the round light stuck in the corner of the room almost like a... Ash stopped abruptly.

"The lights!" He hissed into his comlink.

"What?" Imca replied.

"They put security camera's in the lights! Get out of there!"

Suddenly Ghostmane stalkers materialized out of thin air, blocking each exit. The rest of Delta squad appeared in the stairway entrance, and immediately got into combat formation.

Carter's voice came through the comlink, "Move towards the south exit, the way we came in."

Ash shrugged his shield onto an arm. As did Ebony with his Crest of Almire. Barely audible, a humming sound wavered through the room. Everyone tensed until the atmosphere seemed like it was going to explode. Then the noise ended in a slight flash as Carter's Hail driver finished charging. One of the stalker's recognized the action and snarled. Ash locked eyes with a stalker, and fingered the trigger.

Carter squeezed the trigger and all Vog broke loose. The Alchemer shot collided with a stalker and froze it completely. Then the ricochets bounced off of random things and all of them exploded into action. Ash deflected a saw blades off of his shield and cloaked, rolling under another attack before emptying a Valiance clip into the side of a stalker's head. He parried a flying blade his the bayonet on his gun and returned the favor by firing back in the general direction. Ash glanced sideways Carter cut down a stalker and wave through Imca, he shouted at him and Ash ran forward. He ducked a saw blade and ran out the door. He switched to his Iron slug and turned back to the entrance. Ebony dashed past him and Carter followed. Ash leveled the slug and fired a shot over Carter's shoulder. It knocked back the three stalkers that were about to follow them.

The stalker chattered at its comrades, and looked up. The four knights were getting farther away. It flashed its teeth and pushed a button on a radio. More would be on the other side, those knights were trapped.

Ash and the others ran along the top of the wall. Then a hammer whirled out of the darkness. He held up the shield and slid to a stop, absorbing the shock that the hammer blow dealt. He felt some one bump into him, an glanced back. Carter and Imca were facing back, at the approaching Stalkers. Ebony readied his shield and hefted his Callahan. A gremlin Thwacker charged out of the fog and was immediately felled by a Callahan shot. More followed, presenting Darkfang shields as a wall. Ash switched to his Valiance, and shot at whatever hole he could see. A gray object clattered on the metal floor, a light blue gas billowed out of it.

"Guys! Sleep bomb! Turn... fil...ter...." Carter's voice stuttered to a halt. Ash clicked his filter on and glanced back. Carter was out cold, so was Ebony.

"Imca! Swap!" He shouted, and they slid past each other to engage their enemies. Ash fired clip after clip. Then a yellow object soared through the air. Ash raised his shield and it exploded against it. Everything went white and he hit the ground. A second later, another thump told him Imca was down too. Then the white turned to black

i think this will be weekly

"We've lost contact with two squads of recon rangers." Barrus said, looking at the assembled knights. Iota squad was one of them.

"They have found a fortified gremlin colony. There seems to be too much electronic disturbance for our Intel agents to track their armor signals. We'll have to send in some troops to get them out of there. Those troops are you who have gathered here. On arrival, you will set up a base camp and carry out reconnaissance."

The Lieutenant turned to an Intel knight, who scrambled forward and held out a tray of mechanical spheres. He selected one and pushed a button on it. A dim light flickered on and it started to hover above Barrus' hand.

"This is a new invention thanks to our Technician's, it is an Aerial Navigation Device. AND for short. Deploy it from a high vantage point and it will send all knights a bird's eye view of the area. Each squad will carry a single Device. Dismissed."

Colin volunteered to go get the AND. Leaving Ruby, Midnight, and Isaac to talk it out.

"So, what do you think the gremlin city will look like? " Ruby asked, hoping to start some small talk.

"Reports from HUD footage shows large walls surrounding the city." Isaac stated. "That'll be easy for Midnight won't it?"

At first Midnight had hidden the wings because he was afraid of being laughed at. There was a period of time when he tried to fight without them. He finally told them about it and started to use them effectively in battle.

He laughed along with Isaac albeit not as much, "What about you guys? I can't leave you behind."

Isaac shrugged, "Maybe we can hitch a ride, you don't charge for extra passengers do you?"

"Hey, Isaac. Don't get carried away, Midnight isn't an airplane. He's a person." Ruby chided. Earning a grin from both.

"Sorry about that." Isaac said, "I just got-"

"We know, caught up in the moment." Midnight finished.

"Got the Ant!" Colin interrupted, holding up the black device.

"I think it was an AND" Ruby replied, raising an eyebrow.

Colin tilted his head and copied the expression, "I like Ant better.

Ruby rolled her eyes and waved them forward, "Come on, better get our gear."

They left the building and walked to the barracks. Colin didn't miss that Ruby slipped her hand into Midnight's. Over the months of training, he had seen them grow close. As much as he admired Ruby, he had to put those thoughts aside. He couldn't afford to be jealous when he had to protect his team. Colin shook his head, burying the thoughts and instead walked beside Isaac.

"So, how's your mom?" He asked,

Isaac grinned, but the expression didn't reach his eyes. "She's fine, I'm going to give her a call tomorrow before we go so she knows me here I'll be."

"All right, hey I got a question." Colin decided try another topic. He fished the AND device out of his pocket. "You with me on Ant?"

That earned an actual smile, "Totally, who came up with AND anyways."

Colin grinned in triumph, "Ant it is! Gotta think of an acronym though."

Isaac raised an eyebrow, "As long as it isn't Aerial Navigation Tevice."

They laughed and started brainstorming ideas for a good sounding acronym.

a little late

Stink.
That was the first thing that came to mind when Ash opened his eyes. When he placed his hand on the ground to get up he felt moisture. Turning his head left and right he examined the cell. A metal door with a barred window sat between him and escape. Peering through, he could see other doors that probably held his comrades. The door may be metal but the ground and walls were rock. Water dripped through a crack and spread over the floor. How come it smells so putrid?

He looked through the door again, "Hey, anyone there?"

Carter's face appeared at the door across from his, "Your awake? They took Ebony away for interrogation, Imca is in the cell next to yours."

Ash groaned, "anyone else here?"

"Yes, a few minutes ago they came in and put some more prisoners in cells. They were omega squad."

"They got captured too?"

The answer was evident, as a groan floated from a nearby cell. Ash turned back to his cell and tried to figure out some way of escape. There has to be a way out, there ways is.

~~~~~
Ebony blinked at the bright light of the interrogation room. It was a bland little room, with a table and chairs. One of them had straps hanging from the sides, just take a wild guess to see whose its for. The three gremlins that 'escorted' him to the room, shoved him into the chair and secured the straps. Ebony took note that his legs weren't secure.
The one who looked like the leader chattered at him. Already having decided he wouldn't say anything, Ebony shrugged. He didn't have his helmet, without its translator he couldn't understand any of their... Chatter. The leader turned and spoke to another. After a quick exchange the gremlin left the room and left Ebony alone with the other two. He counted about five minutes when the gremlin returned with another in Mender robes.
More chattering, then the Mender inspected him. "Your one of those troubling Ranger's aren't you?"
He raised an eyebrow, a translator.
"I've been wondering when you knights would find our civilization. I knew we couldn't keep it hidden forever." The Mender continued. "Oh well, its always good to have something to test on."
What did that thing say? Ebony suppressed the urge to gasp. He watched as the gremlin that was probably not a mender take out a syringe.
The Mender smiled evilly, "This is my little brainwashing serum. It's supposed to make victims follow gremlin commands. Let's see if it works shall we?" The gremlin stood up to administer the drug.
"Let's not." Ebony kicked out sideways and tripped the Mender. He stood up, chair still strapped to his arms and chest, and kicked the table at one of the guards. The table smashed into one and he hit the ground. The other two advanced with a wrench wand and a hammer. The wand wielder started to charge its weapon, and the Thwacker swung an over head blow. Spinning around, Ebony took the blow with the chair. He felt the wood splinter, and tore his arms out of the locked position they had been in for so long. The wooden handles armrests of the chair were still strapped to his arms. Ebony smashed the wall and freed his arms, then turned to get tackled by a Thwacker. They rolled around on the floor almost comically. Ebony scrabbled for a weapon and his fingers touched a hilted Knife on the floor near the broken table. He slashed the Thwacker's throat and pushed him off. An energy blast slammed into the floor near him. He looked at the wrench wand before diving sideways as another hit the wall. Looking around for cover, Ebony grabbed the Mender and held his knife to the gremlins throat. The wand wielder hesitated, and Ebony inched to the door.
"Your going to tell me where my friends are, then you'll tell me where our weapons are, unless you want to leave this world the hard way." Ebony whisper to the Mender as he eyed the other gremlin, and wiggled the knife a little. Slowly he backed out of the door and locked it behind him.
Outside, there was no alarm. Quietly, he found a closet and slammed the Mender into a wall.
"Where are my friends!"
The gremlin bared its teeth, "You could leave now, escape by yourself. Why do you need to rescue your comrades?"
"Tell where they are, NOW." Ebony inched the knife closer to the gremlins neck.
"You wouldn't kill me, if you do you won't find your friends."
Ebony smirked, "Really? What gives you the notion one of the other gremlins won't tell me?"
"You really care about them, don't you? They're in the lowest level, your weapons are in the box at the end of the hall. You'll never get out of here with your friends."
"Care to tell me why?"
"Oh I don't know, I think I'll let it explain itself. Go rescue your 'friends' and see if you can survive. I'll certainly have fun watching it."
Frustrated, Ebony swung the knife handle into the gremlin's head. As it fell unconscious, he caught it so it wouldn't make any noise.
"No you won't."
Finished early! and it felt a bit short so its up early.
"All right, up and at em guys! We don't want to be late today." Ruby clapped her hands and waited for her squad to get out of bed.
"Ugh, why can't we start at a time that isn't two hours before actual morning?" Colin whined.
Isaac rolled out of bed, "Just sleep on the lift, gremlin cities aren't next to Moorcroft."
"Ok, gear up people." Ruby was already strapping her rifle on her back.
Colin strapped his guardian shield to his arm and sheathed his sword. Midnight loaded his Blitz and checked the edge on his Cold Iron Vanquisher. Isaac grabbed his Acheron and Sentenza, then looked at his Polaris and Voltedge. He shrugged and grabbed the gun, fixing up the mechanism. Ruby ran her hand along the edge of her Final Flourish.
"Ready?" She asked picking up a small rations pack. It had food, water, and survival gear for a week.
Colin nodded, as did Midnight. Isaac looked at his Polaris, still wondering if he should switch it for his sword.
"Iota squad, Move out!" Ruby lead the way out the door and to the Arcade.
Midnight fell in step beside her, "Why the official command? Usually its just 'Let's go' or something."
Ruby sighed, "I don't wanna mess this up, seems like the most important mission we've been on yet. "
"I got that, Recon Rangers huh."
Seems like nothing else needed to be said, so they walked in silence.
* * *
At the Arcade, Barrus stood by a lift, giving commands and organizing he soldiers.
"Sir! The base camp outside of the gremlin fortification has been set up, a awaiting the rest of the squads." A knight reported,
Barrus nodded, "Good, send Commander Ray down."
"Iota squad B-class has arrived, as did Epsilon Squad. Should I tell to go straight down?" The knight asked.
"Yes send them down as well, how many more are there?"
"Only four, then all knights will be at the base camp."
Barrus waved the knight away and put a hand to his forehead. So much has been happening since the discovery of the city. How he wished he could be on the battle field again.
The intel knight nodded, and sent a message to the arriving squads. The message would tell them where to go and when. He walked to one of the command rooms and knocked on the door.
"Commander Ray? Barrus requests your presence."
"All right, just a sec" came the muffled reply.
The door opened and the knight donned in full Azure guardian armor stepped out.
"What does Barrus need me for?" Ray asked, raising the visor on his helmet.
"He is sending you down to the recently set up base camp. You are to command the knights there."
Ray looked weary, "All right, tell him I'm on my way."
* * *
"Sleep on the lift my foot." Colin muttered as they stepped onto the metal elevator.
"Oh be quiet," Ruby replied, leaning on a side rail.
"What do you think the gremlin city looks like?" Midnight asked.
"Probably mechanical. You know, changing houses just like the clockworks?." Isaac guessed.
Colin shrugged, "The mission report says the city is surrounded by large walls. Otherwise it supposedly looks like Emberlight."
There was the usual hissing and gears turning, then the elevator began its descent into the clockworks. A light flickered on and illuminated the shaft.
"Would it be that hard to put a chair in this thing?"
"Shut up. Colin."
"I'm just saying!"
Chapter 5,
Ash slumped against the door of the cell. He couldn't find any flaw with the door. Maybe over a long period of time he could rust out the door with water. Ugh, there was no getting out of this one.
Footsteps.
Ash stood up and tried to see who was coming. It was too narrow and he couldn't get a clear view.
"We're getting out of here."
"Eb! What happened?" Carter appeared at his window.
"I escaped, our weapons are at the end of the hall." Ebony tossed keys to a recently freed Carter who unlocked Ash and Imca's doors.
"Omega squad is here." A voice came from a door.
"I got them, get our weapons." Ash said. Carter handed him the keys and he opened the door.
A man with silver hair stepped out of the first cell. "You are Ash, correct?"
"Yes, you're Grey right?"
He nodded, then held out a hand. "I know which cells have my squad. We don't want any extra weight."
There didn't seem to be anyone else but someone could be keeping quiet. Ash handed him the keys and turned to see the others.
"We got their weapons too." Imca held up an Obsidian Edge.
"Hey that's mine!" A knight called out.
Imca tossed it and hefted Var.
"Come on guys, gremlins are bound to get here soon." Ebony loaded his gun and waved Carter along.
* * *
Ash was getting suspicious. They had met nothing on the way out. There was a trap somewhere, and everyone knew it. They had reached the ground level, the walls were visible looming over the city. Two squads of Rangers, smack dab in the middle of a gremlin city and no intel.
"All right we need to get an aerial view."
It was the Omega squad Striker. Bernard West.
Carter nodded in agreement, "Yeah, Ebony, Ash get up that building and scope out the area."
"Roger."
"Got it."
Ash ran forward and vaulted up onto a railing. He hauled himself up and jumped to the next ledge. Taking his time, he was able to get up without much difficulty. Ebony was right behind him.
"All right we're up," Ebony said in his comlink.
"Good, transmit some video feed of the area, we'll figure out the quickest way out." Carter ordered.
Ash and Ebony both flicked on the video feed and made 360 degree scan of the area.
"Done, transmission sent." Ash and Ebony flicked off their video feed. Transmissions were dangerous in a technological citadel such as this.
"Good, Imca and Affraiel are already figuring out a route of escape. Come on."
Ash turned to leave.
"Ash, wait." Ebony said.
"What? Come on we got to get out of here."
"First, you need to know something." Ebony held out a hand. A syringe was settled in it.
"What is it?" Ash reached out.
Ebony pulled his hand back, "I can't talk for long, I didn't know Omega were here."
"What about them? Were all knights."
"Not all of us are loyal."
"What?"
"Times up we got to go."
Ebony took a running leap and disappeared below the buildings. Ash absorbed the information and shook his head. He was talking about a traitor. One probably from Omega. He would have to be careful what he said from now on. Ash took a step back and followed Ebony down to meet the others.
Soooo Sorry
"Walls is an understatement." Remarked Isaac.
They were staring up at the huge walls fortifying the gremlin city. The rest of the knights had set up sort of a base camp, it was fortified and ready to carry out the rescue mission. About two hundred meters east of the camp was one side of the city.
"You know, what would they be for?" Midnight asked. "I mean its not like anything is attacking enough to maintain walls this size."
"I bet they have tons of gizmos inside the walls, maybe its a storage area." Isaac replied.
A small message floated across the knights' HUDs.
Please report to the main tent to receive orders.
They shrugged and walked back inside the camp. The main tent had four entrances, one at every corner. Isaac and Midnight met Ruby at the south entrance.
"Where's Colin?"
Ruby shrugged, "I don't know, he told me he had to go look at something and I haven't seen him since."
"Hey, I found out when we're going into the city." Colin's voice came out of nowhere.
He was standing at the entrance and waved them in. Inside was a big table presumably for war meetings and at the head sat a knight who looked to be in command.
About twenty other knights were in the tent. More were entering.
"First thing I would like to say is thank you for coming and let's get this mission done!" The commander began.
A chorus of agreement spread through the room. The commander was dressed in full azure guardian armor, and had the look of a veteran.
"My name is Ray, and I will be your commander for this mission. As we all know, we have some Rangers in trouble and in need of help. The camp will be split into thirds, with a third moving in each day. Each squad will use their AND unit to map out parts of the city. When it starts getting dark, be sure to start heading back. We now nothing about the area and it could act the clockworks." He paused, looking at each individual present. "The rest of you will be defending this position. It won't be long before they know we're here. Right outside of each entrance Is a bulletin board. You will find the listed schedule for each squad every day. For now, that's all you need to know, dismissed."
There was silence. Seemed like not many expected it to be this short of a talk. Some tentatively got up an walked put, they were soon followed by more and more.
Ruby shrugged at her squad and they left. As they exited the rent Isaac looked sideways at Colin.
"Where were you?"
Colin shrugged, "Just catching up."
"With who?"
"My father, Commander Ray."
This was news to Isaac, as well as Midnight and Ruby.
"Wait what? That guy was-" Midnight started to say.
"Why doesn't he go by Commander Lark than?" Isaac interrupted.
Colin thought about for a bit, "I don't really know,"
They walked in silence for a second. Then Ruby spoke up.
"So when are we go going into the city?"
"We go on the second shift. Tomorrow." Colin replied.
Ruby stopped, seeming to think for a minute. If they were going tomorrow, then they had time to practice and get some rest.
"Come on then!" She said, gesturing to the training grounds, "Always time for improvement."
This received a sigh from both Isaac and Colin, while Midnight shrugged and jogged after Ruby. He was soon followed by the other two, who were thinking of the exercise they didn't want to do.
Chapter 7
Chapter 7:
How eery can it get?
Ash looked around him as they moved through the silent city. Nighttime had fallen and moving unseen was easier. There was still the occasional Gremlin or construct, but usually they were easy to bypass.
What Ebony had told him was still bouncing around his mind. Not all of us are loyal. Who was he talking about? Unconsciously, he reached for his blaster. Somehow, he figured he would find out soon.
Even the inhabitants of this place of were sleeping, the city certainly wasn't. There was the dull sound of gears churning no matter where you were. The wall was growing ever closer, somehow they would find a way out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The massive wall loomed above the two Squads, the dark walls would have covered them in darkness if not for the periodical lighting that was imbedded in the wall. Ash moved forward and felt around the wall, feeling for any weakness or a door.

"What's the plan?" Whispered Ebony.

The large guardian from Omega squad cracked his knuckles, "I could bash a hole in it."

"How long would that take Affraiel?" Grey replied. "West, set some charges, see if you can blow a hole in it."

The Omega striker stepped forward, priming a Deconstructor and attaching it onto the wall. They were almost free. He reached out to prime it when a whistling sound was heard.

At the same instant, one thought crossed each of their minds.

Ghostmane.

West turned and dove as the flying saw blade collided with the bomb and exploded. Immediately the knights moved together, forming a defensive circle. A dozen Ghostmane Stalkers materialized, surrounding the Rangers. Smoke cleared, and a gaping hole was in the wall. Two Stalkers appeared, barring the escape route.

One Ghostmane held out a small box. It projected a picture of a Gremlin in a Mender's outfit. The hood was pulled back and a pair of glasses covered the gremlins eyes.

"Rangers. I applaud your stealth, you were able to evade our sensors most of the way here. I suspect you would have blown a hole out and escape into the night."

Ash exchanged looks with Imca.

The gremlin continued, "I can't let you do that, you see, as a deputy of the whispering venom, I can't disappoint him and let new subjects escape!"

This was certainly something to note.

"I've had enough of your talk!" Affraiel drew his two swords and threw one at the device. The sword shattered the projector and canceled the Hologram.

Simultaneously, each Ranger started attacking.

Ash punched a hole in a Stalker with his Slug and peppered another with his Valiance.

Ebony slipped out his Umbra Driver and Callahan, putting a bullet in any Ghostmane who thought they could sneak up on anyone.

Imca grinned and hefted Var, chopping left and right, occasionally switching to a rifle and blowing out a gremlins brain.

Carter methodically cut down one after one of the enemy with his Dread Venom Striker. Deflecting saw blades and parrying, slipping through defenses and cutting a swathe through the mob.

Omega squad was taking care of themselves as well, but time was passing and there didn’t seem to be any falter in the amount of enemies. It was cut and cut and shoot and block. No rest for the weary.

Then, it stopped.

The gremlins suddenly backed off, leaving a circular area clear. Ash let out a breath, watching the stalkers. Near him, the Omega Squad recon collapsed. Grey helped him up, propping him up on his shoulder.

A row of gremlins parted, making a pathway. It almost made Ash roll his eyes. Then the gremlin from the hologram appeared, striding down the walkway like a king.

Chapter 8

“And go!”

A knight hit a bell, and the two knights moved towards each other.

Collin moved on the balls of his feet, watching the heavyset opponent. Comparing the two, Collin was wearing lighter armor, the Azure guardian armor was far more maneuverable than the Volcanic Plate Mail of the opponent.

He watched the knight in volcanic armor move, and feinted forward. His opponent nudged the Volcanic Plate Shield forward, aiming to deflect the blow that never came.

“Come one, hit me!” He taunted, hefting his Khorovod and settling it across a shoulder.

Collin raised an eyebrow, “Oh? And where would you recommend?”

He heard a growl and brought his shield forward, deflecting the savage blow from the rounded blade. It thudded into the ground and stuck there. Colin stepped forward and glanced the volcanic knight’s helm and stepped back out of range of the slow return swing.

His opponent slipped out a gun, and spun its magazine.

A Blitz Needle.

Colin threw himself sideways to avoid the small storm of needles that would’ve made him a porcupine.

He started to move again when another barrage of needles hit him head on. He had forgotten about the second clip! He took it head on and was knocked backwards. The Needles stuck out of his armor and had knocked his sword out of his hand. The Leviathan lay on the ground a full body length away from him. he started to reach for it when a foot crashed down on his arm.

“Not so cocky now are we?” The knight in Volcanic plate mail smirked.

Collin blinked through the pain and reached behind his back, his hand hidden by his shield.

The knight boldly raised an arm in victory and stared around at the few who were watching. Then levelled his Khorovod at Colin’s neck. “Yield.”

Just a few more seconds. Collin tried to pull his arm out from under his opponents boot, and was rewarded with more weight on it.

“No way out of this one Collin! “He laughed, “Now yield, and I’ll stop.”

Perfect, Collin jerked his shield arm up and a white object appeared, reaching its peak in the air right in front of the surprised knight’s face. There was a click, and a blinding flash of light engulfed both of them.

The weight was lifted off of Collins arm, and he rolled out of the way. Collin opened his eyes and grabbed his sword. His Nitronome was modified to function as a flashbang instead of a bomb.

By the time his opponent’s eyes had refocused, the situation had reversed.

“Yield,” Collin said, focusing his sword on the knight’s neck.

The knight’s armor worked against him, and it was easier to keep him down.

The frustration was clear on the other knight’s face, “I Yield.”

The winner backed up and sheathed his sword. He reached out a hand and helped up the other knight.

“Nice move, you really got me with that flashbang.”

Colin shrugged, shaking his hand and left to go get a refreshment. As he poured himself a refreshment, he looked around for his teammates. His eyes lit on Ruby, who was sparring with Midnight. Over by the range he saw Isaac brushing up on his marksmanship. Colin himself was never great with guns, he didn’t have the accuracy to be a gunner.

He looked back to his teammates that were sparring.

Ruby held out her Flourish, the point catching the dim light as it snaked through the air. Midnight held his Vanquisher lightly to the side, the point never falling below his waist, his aegis was held forward.

Without warning, Ruby leapt forward with the point slicing through the air. Almost as quickly, Midnight sidestepped and the attack deflected off the shield. He followed up with an overhead swing which was deflected by his Squad leader’s Heater Shield. The dance continued, attack defend, attack defend. Midnight’s heavy sword and shield slowed him down but he performed as well as his opponent, who likewise was careful to avoid taking any full hits.

A little seed of jealousy wormed its way into his mind. It could be him sparring with her. He quelled the thoughts and looked for a distraction.

Chapter 9

Ash stared at the scientist, then the Syringe that Ebony had shown him earlier came to mind. Had he gotten it from him?

The Gremlin frowned and looked around. “I would have prefered that you all would have been in my lab, but this will have to do.”

Carter spoke up, “What? What do you mean?”

“There aren’t any supplies anywhere, no way to redo a test with accuracy!”

A four legged Construct about the size of a Scuttlebot emerged from behind the Scientist. It had a singular gun on one side of it with a long barrel.

“May I present to you the SID-1.0 My own personal design. It’s a nice little fellow, useful for injecting testing chemicals.”

He paused, as if thinking. “Although he hasn’t been used outside of my lab. I look forward to testing it out.”

This time Carter stepped forward, a little angry. “You’re not testing that on us.”

A scowl flashed across the Scientist’s face. He reached down and pushed a button, and the SID unit pointed and fired.

The projectile flashed through the air, and was cut in half by Carter’s Venom Striker. It clattered to the ground in two pieces, a liquid leaked out of the now visible syringe. Ash stared at the liquid, it looked like the one that Ebony showed him.

Carter’s gaze hardened, and he stared at the Scientist who in turn narrowed his eyes.

Then a cry of pain came from one of the rangers. Ash saw Grey, Omega Squad’s leader, pull a syringe out and toss it onto the ground. There must have been another robot.

“What does it do?!” Carter stepped towards the Scientist and brandished the Venom Striker.

“You’ll see.”

Suddenly a small burst of pain flashed through Ash’s mind, in shock, he turned and looked at the syringe sticking out of his arm. He pulled it out with a grunt and dropped it. The others had noticed he’d been hit.
Carter’s face showed no emotion, but his voice showed his impatience, “You have next to 20 seconds to tell me what. it. does.”

The Scientist checked his watch and took out a small controller. Then tilted his head in a peculiar expression.

“Grey!”

The Omega Commander was standing ominously straight. Slowly one hand moved down to his holster, and pulled out his gun. A bead of sweat rolled down Grey’s face, though it was expressionless. Slowly, and trembling, the he raised the gun at the scientist.

The Scientist in turn smiled, but there was a malice behind it.

Then Grey turned the gun on Carter.

“Grey!” Carter stared into the other man’s eyes, his voice was steely calm, “What are you doing.”

Grey squeezed the trigger, it spat a bullet at Carter, who blocked it with his Aegis. Another shot, again stopped.

Then the pistol Grey was holding exploded, cleaved in two by Affraiel’s Leviathan. The bulky guardian followed up with an explosive punch to the chin. Grey collapsed onto the ground, still wearing that expressionless face.

Affraiel smirked and looked up, “What? I Shouldn’t have done that?”

“Hmm. Can, still, be, immobilized, by, standard, pressure, points, “ The Scientist was jotting notes down onto a clipboard.

Immediately Carter wheeled around, “You’re dead.” The Dread Venom Striker went up and he took a step forward to take charge.

A shot pierced the air, and Carter stopped dead. He looked down with a shocked expression on his face, and tried to look back. His sword clattered onto the metal floor, and he fell to his knees.

Ash stared in shock, and tried to turn his head to see the shooter. That’s when he noticed his arms were forward, with… a smoking gun clutched in his hands.

An explosion sounded, and Imca appeared, grabbing the blaster and bringing back her other arm, everything was already starting to turn fuzzy,

“I’m sorry.”

Then everything went black.

Chapter 10

Clunk!

“Oof.. wha- was tha for?” Collin opened a bleary eye. He had just been pushed off his bunk.

Isaac was standing over him, failing to hide a grin, “Ruby says to get out bed, you’re as slow as a lumber when you wake up.”

Collin groaned and picked himself off of the ground. Today was the day they would witness a gremlin city. He splashed his face with cold water and pulled on his armor. He walked outside and met Isaac outside.

“Where are they?”

Isaac gestured towards the command tent, “Commander Ray is giving them a briefing.”

Collin nodded, “When do think we’ll be sent into that gremlin city, also, have they determined a name?”

“I don’t know and I don’t know.” Isaac shook his head, frustrated, “Can’t they just tell everyone?”

Collin sighed, and turned his head to see the giant walls. They stared back at him with ominous silence.

“Hey, do they have a telescope, or observation thing around here?”

Isaac tilted his head, “I think they have a boosted observation radar over by the biotech lab. Why?”

“I don’t know, come on.”

They made their way through the waking hours of the camp, a couple of guards were posted, awake already. Other knights were stumbling about, trying to shake off the heavy drowsiness. There was a yawning biotech taking an early inventory of the area.

“Good morning!” Collin called out.

“Wha?” The biotech turned, “What’s going on?”

“Nothing, just wanted to see if we could find anything with the radar.” Isaac replied.

“Uh, ok, but we haven’t found anything interesting, good luck finding whatever you’re looking for”

Collin gave a crude salute and moved to the terminal, after few clicks, a video feed is up and running, displaying an ever interesting view of the walls.

Isaac tapped him on the shoulder, “So, what are you looking for anyways?”

“I don’t know, I got a feeling about today. The walls were looking more ominous than usual.”

“Really? Ominous? Ok… how abou- what’s that?”

Collin paused, “what?” The camera was fixed on the west side of the wall, disappearing into the gloom. All he could see was the lights that gleamed dimly periodically across the outside.

“Down there, by the base of the wall!” Isaac was peering closer,

Collin panned down and zoomed in, the fog became thicker, but a group of shadow was visible.

“What is that?” Collin adjusted the camera, and focused. The shadows sharpened, and the figures became more visible. They were knights.

“Were all of the knights that were sent out yesterday accounted for?” Isaac asked.

“I’m pretty sure they were.” Collin frowned, and decided to try something. He brought up the mounted floodlight and prepared to flick it on.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m sending them a message.”

He flicked it on, then off, then on again. A few seconds passed, and then a dim light flickered back, it flickered three times, then went on for a full second, then off, then again twice more. It was followed by another three flickers.

“Its S.O.S” Isaac looked excited, “It’s might be the Ranger’s!”

“Go get the commanders, they’re all in one place.” Collin replied, I’ll try and get some people out there right now.

Isaac nodded quickly, and stumbled trying to pick up his pace. Collin flashed back an acknowledgement and ran to the camp exit, waving along a few people and some medics.

Chapter 11, might start posting on thursdays

Ash opened his eyes, then was wide awake in two seconds. Bars. Not again, What was he doing here again? Then it all came back to him, the scientist, Carter… oh Vog, did that actually...?

He focused on his hand, he lifted it. It lifted. He turned to his other arm, it too responded. The Serum must’ve worn off.

“You’re awake? Commander Ray wants to see you.” A cold voice broke the silence. There was a dull clang, and he was pulled to his feet.

Two minutes later he was in a small room sitting at a table, it wasn’t pitch black like an interrogation room, and slivers of light shone through the bottom of the brown fabric that surrounded him. The entrance flap opened and a tall figure fully dressed in Azure armor ducked as he made his way into the tent. Without saying anything, the still armored knight took a seat across from Ash. He took off the helmet, and the face underneath revealed a the battle hardened face of a warrior.

“You would be Ash?”

Ash nodded. He had been left with all of his armor, no weapons of course, behind the visor, he narrowed his eyes. Was this an interrogation?

“I’ve been informed that you have attacked your squad leader in an engagement.”

Ash looked up at this. Did he? How could he argue that he was innocent, his comrades saw him pull the trigger.

“Sir, I would never-”

“I know, your record doesn’t show any evidence of suspicious activity. But, I want to hear everything. I’ve heard your squadmates’ opinion, but I want as much info as I can before I make judgement.”

Ash took a deep breath, this wasn’t going to be easy.

------------------------------------------------

“Are you in Delta squad?”

Imca looked up, “Yes. What about it?”

“Your leader’s reports have been finalized, I figured you would want to know.”

Imca stood abruptly, “Show me them, now.”

“If you’d follow me-”

“No, tell me where he is, then give me the reports.”

“But he-”

“I don’t care.”

“Fine, he’s in the infirmary, room 2b.”

Imca opened the ‘door’ flap and sat in the chair across from her unconscious leader. What happened? All of her training and experience hasn’t prepared her for this. Her squad were the only one’s who had gotten to know her, and now they were scattered and broken. In the chaos after the shot, Ebony had disappeared, as well as one of Omega’s.

“nnh-” Carter opened one eye, and immediately winced. The machinery beside his bed was starting to emit scattered beeps.

“Carter!” Imca stood up and stepped forward, not sure what to do.

Just then the biotech from before entered with some papers. Her eyes widened at the Carter straining to move his head.

“Here-” The papers were thrust at Imca and the biotech hurried over to the machines.

Imca was speechless. She didn’t know what was happening, she knew basic medical skills but she was much more focused on holding her own in the fight, not after. She was the tough girl, the one who wielded Var with force and didn’t back down from a fight. With a sigh she sat back down into the chair feeling helpless and leafed through the papers. Apparently most of the energy bolt was gone by the time it breached his armor. It barely missed a lung but broke several ribs. Restless, Imca got up and left for the sparring, she needed to pound something.

------------------------------------------------

What have I done?

Ebony sat on a table, staring at the monitor which showcased all of the orders which led him here. Because of him Carter might be dead. He rubbed an eye and turned to watch Garrett Darrius. The Omega squad Recon was a perfect traitor. He built up a great reputation and disappeared without regret. Right now the traitor was laughing with a gruff Ironclaw Thwacker. Who was he kidding? Ebony was a traitor too. At the last second he had tried to back out, maybe get some information to Ash, or even Carter. Those attempts failed, and Carter was shot. Ash was probably in jail for what Ebony did. How would he ever face them again?

Chapter 12

The camp was buzzing with chatter. Now that the Rangers were here, would they pack up or stay for reconnaissance?

“Ruby!”

She turned, an officer was standing there, looking at a clipboard.

“Yes?”

“You are to report to commander Ray.”

Ruby nodded, then turned to her team, “Hey! We got to go.”

Isaac looked up, he was playing cards with Colin, “Where?”

“Commander Ray is going to talk to us, sounds like a mission.”

A few minutes later they were standing at the door of the command tent, waiting for the Commander to come out. When he did, they stood at attention.

Ruby spoke up, “We were sent here?”

He blinked, then nodded, “Yeah, I need a squad to escort our… prisoner up to Haven, he’ll be put on trial once the evidence is gathered.”

“You mean the Ranger?” Ruby looked at Midnight.

“yes, there’s a Guardian waiting with him at the elevator up. He’s unarmed, it should be easy. That is all,”

He smiled and moved past them. After a few seconds, Midnight spoke up.

“Is it just me, or did he seem…”

“Different?” Collin finished.

The squad looked at Collin, he was blood. He saw the looks on their faces, “I don’t know, he wasn’t the closest father one could have.”

Ruby sighed, this was turning out to be very different than a mission to rescue some Recon Rangers. What had she gotten herself- no, what had she gotten them into?

“To the Ranger?” spoke Collin after a while.

With no argument, the squad made their way to the edge of town and met a warden holding the ranger.

The Warden was watching the Ranger with steady eyes who in turn was staring at the ground, then the Warden looked up when the squad was in eyesight.

“You are transporting this prisoner?” He spoke, the deep voice resonating out of the helmet.

“That’s us!” Ruby answered, she unsheathed her Flourish and held it towards the Ranger.

“Don’t worry, he hasn’t tried to escape, hasn’t even moved.”

Midnight exchanged looks with Isaac, something was wrong here. Even though it wasn’t clear what it was, something was off.

Ruby peered at the Ranger, who hadn’t looked up at all, “Get moving.” She poked him gently with the sword.

He moved away from the sword and looked up. His eyes were full of intelligence, and definitely something to worry about. Then he started moving, with a blank look.

Ruby decided to go by the book. “All right then, Isaac and I will lead the way, Midnight and Collin, make sure he stays with us.”

“Roger that.”

Ruby started forward, casting looks at the Ranger. Then at the lift ahead of them. Then back at the Ranger.

Once inside the lift, she relaxed a little bit. In a close quarters, the Ranger was a at disadvantage… she hoped.

Unbeknownst to Iota Squad, Ash had already taken stock of their weaponry and his mind was working furiously, trying to get back to that camp, to track down Ebony, and somehow clear his name.

Chaptor 13 Combat!

Chapter 13

Ash felt his cuffs, thanks to the Guards not taking his armor, he had the ability to cut through the links easily. He had only waited, due to the Warden standing over him. However, with this squad of younger knights, he would be able to get away from them. He would need a weapon though, and the Rifle the girl had on her back was looking like just the thing he needed.

He blinked when the lift stopped.

After some silence, one of his escorts spoke up, “Must not go all the way up.”

They ushered him forwards and he was walking again. This was a chittering compound, a level swarming with smaller enemies who burrowed through the ground. He looked around, wondering what his escorts would do when they were attacked.

As if on cue, a multitude of Scarab beetles popped out of the ground in a cloud of dust followed by an Alpha Wolver and its pack.

All four of them froze, and then the leader took action. Ordering the Valkyrie to focus fire on the bugs. Their recon spun his Acheron and ran forward muttering something. He skidded to a stop by a wolver and delivered a quick stab to its side. It slumped to the ground and another leapt to avenge it. The Wolver’s attack was cut off by the Girl- the leader, who impaled it with her Flourish and threw it to the ground.

The Guardian had stayed near Ash and was dealing with two wolvers. With a small prick of humor, he realized they were going after him because he was the least dangerous with no weapons. The “weak pack-member”. The Guardian moved to intercept a wolver who was trying to sneak around him, and made it retreat with a swing of his Leviathan. The other wolver leapt on his shield and pulled the soldier off balance. There was a dull thud and a clunk as he hit the ground and dropped his shield. Ash pondered stepping forward when he saw the Guardian hold up a white ball.

In the next instance a white flash blinded Ash and he stumbled back blinking. He shook his head and squinted to see the guardian finish off the last wolver. He looked around and watched the Striker chop a Scarab in half in midair. The Valkyrie was aloft, spraying the ground with his Blitz Needle. The leader was facing off with the Alpha Wolver, it growled and bared its fangs, then leapt. The girl stepped sideways and slashed in a wide arc, catching the Wolver in the back leg and it crumpled to the ground snapping wildly. With a quick stab it was finished off.

The leader looked to the Valkyrie who was demolishing the last of the scarabs. The last one crumbled to dust, and they sighed in relief, before turning to Ash. He had resumed staring emptily at the ground and pretended not to notice any of it. They resumed position and started walking again, Ash looked up. Ahead of them was a giant gear turning slowly, it was jutting into the walkway and they had to go around it. Might be a good place to act.

He waited until they were passing it, he watched the two behind him turn their heads to watch the gear, he was tempted to as well, but it was time to go.

In a burst of action, he broke his cuffs apart and lunged for the rifle on the girl’s back. His hand closed around its stock and he dove sideways, taking the weapon with him. He rolled up and checked the clip, full.

His cuffs had been thoroughly sawed through during the Wolver encounter easily with the Anti-personal spikes on his brigandine.

The guardian had been about to grab him before he dove sideways, instead he grabbed the leader. The girl turned and saw Ash immediately, in an instant, the squad had weapons drawn.

Ash almost grinned, this was going to be interesting. He raised the rifle and fired twice, one shot slammed into the ground at the feet of the Valkyrie and the next one collided with his Needler. The autogun clattered to the ground in pieces. Without pausing, Ash rolled sideways to avoid the Recon’s Sentenza burst and returned a three shot burst. The shots were intercepted by the guardian who had stepped in the way.

Then the Valkyrie was upon him, swinging a Cold Iron Vanquisher in an overhead arc. Ash ducked under it and swung the rifle butt around, making contact with a satisfying thunk. The striker wheeled away, and the Recon appeared, stabbing his Acheron forwards. Ash jumped backwards, and the giant gear was at his back. He stole a look at it, and spun sideways and around it. He was just quick enough to avoid the lightning quick lunge that the leader delivered. Behind the gear, Ash took off running. Adrenaline pumped through his veins and he stepped to the side as a Polaris shot exploded. Up ahead, some scrap piles lay scattered.

He skidded to a stop and rolled behind a pile. He raised the rifle and fired at the pursuing knights. His shots slammed into the shield of the Recon but otherwise did nothing. Another sentenza shot flew over his head. They outnumbered him, he needed to even the odds.

He rose to a kneel and steadied his breath, three shots in quick succession left the barrel and streaked towards his escorts. One slammed into the guardian’s shield, slowing him down. Another collided with the Recon’s leg, and he hit the ground. The last one was deflected off of the Leader’s shield, but she also slowed down, shouting a command and turning to the Recon’s aid.

He lowered the rifle and ran. vaulting over scrap piles and ducking behind bushes. He had been running for awhile when he realized he was alone. Quickly he found a large scrap pile to hide behind. Looking through the rifle’s scope, he saw the Valkyrie jog into the area and stop. He rested his hands on his knees and caught his breath, then gripped the Cold Iron Vanquisher and looked around. Ash watched as the Valkyrie moved slowly and methodically, then stood up.

The Valkyrie froze then brandished his shield to receive any bullets. Ash stayed still, then started to shuffle backwards, looking backwards for a second to see the edge of the level coming up on him.

“Stop!” The voice was surprisingly calm despite the situation. The Valkyrie unfolded his wings and started forward.

Ash kept on going, he had gotten rid of the Blitz needle, but the rifle was almost out of ammo as well. His foot hit the inch-high metallic edge of the railing and the forever deep fall loomed behind him. He looked back and then back at the Valkyrie.

“You can really fly?” He asked, lowering the tip of the rifle.

Confused, the knight let his guard down, and moved closer, “Y-yes, now lay down the rifle.”

Ash drummed his fingers on the stock of the rifle, yeah like that’ll happen, “Do you have the same biological makeup?”

The Valkyrie held up the Vanquisher and crept ever closer, trying to maximise his effectiveness with a sword.

“No talking? Ok then…” Ash raised the rifle and made to shoot it, then darted around to the back of the Valkyrie when his eyes were hidden by his raised shield. A swift kick sent him stumbling towards the edge, he caught himself and swung wildly the sword whooshed through empty air.

There was a shout, and Ash turned his head. The leader was running through the scrap yard, eyes locked on him.

“I’m sorry about this,” Ash spoke to the Valkyrie. Then charged headlong into him and they went airborne, disappearing into the gloom as they fell.

The panicked Valkyrie flapped his wings and started to slow down, and Ash held to one of his feet. They slowed, but still descended. Ash felt a stab of pain and realized the knight was trying to kick him away. He tightened his grip and looked down.

And saw the ground that rushed up to meet him too quickly.

Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Oh vog, oh vogohvogohvog. Ruby almost threw herself over the edge as she stared down into the fog. She searched and searched hopelessly. Ruby kicked herself for letting Midnight go by himself. Alright, pull yourself together, you need to stay calm.

She took a deep breath and turned back to meet up with Isaac and Collin. Isaac was standing, and Collin was supporting him.

“Hey! You ok?” Ruby asked.

Isaac nodded, he looked down at his leg, “It missed any important stuff, looks like it shot of the greave and nothing more besides a scrape.”

“Where’s…” Collin started, then stopped. It was obvious. They had let the prisoner get away.

“Midnight?” Isaac asked,

“The prisoner booked it and jumped off the edge, took Midnight with him.” Ruby couldn’t keep the worry from her voice.

“Let’s get back to the lift, Midnight can fly, he won’t die from the fall.” Collin supplied.

They trudged back to lift, not really wanting to go back to the camp and report what happened.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ash hauled himself off of the ground, he checked for serious injuries and found none. He looked up and saw the Striker standing above him, sword out.
Ash reached up, grabbed one of the chains and yanked himself up. The chains tightened and the sword was pulled from the Valkyrie’s grasp. Ash let go and the Vanquisher clanged loudly on the ground.
Ash crossed his arms and looked around. It was flat for as far as the eye can see, which was about ten meters, then fog. He kept turning his head and his eyes lit on a small beacon of light. Might be the camp.
He started to take a step, then looked back at the Valkyrie, who was looking at his sword, gauging whether or not to dive for it.
“What’s your name?” He asked suddenly.
The Valkyrie froze, “Midnight.” There was a hint of suspicion in his voice.
Ash nodded, “Why do you think I’ve been convicted?”
Midnight thought for a bit, “You’re a traitor, they said you shot your leader.”
“Who said?”
“Er- the other squads, and the officials. I heard them talking.”
“They’re all mistaken,” Ash wondered why he was talking to this knight, maybe he had to vent to someone, and he had this guy’s undivided and maybe involuntary- attention.
“Why is that? You didn’t hesitate to shoot my friend.” Midnight remarked.
“I barely skimmed him, if I wanted to I could have hit him anywhere else. I’m not a ranger because I bought my way in.” He sighed, “At least I was.”
Midnight looked at him curiously, “So what happened? If everyone else doesn’t know what happened, then who does.”
“Ebony.” Ash raised his head. He had to get back to camp, but he also had to be careful.
“I’m sorry? Who’s Ebony?” Midnight asked.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, he’s my squadmate, and I have some questions for him. See ya.”
Ash started jogging, then broke into a sprint, leaving Midnight behind him. He wondered what his squad guardian was doing right now. And what he was going to say. He didn’t understand what was going on and he needed answers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Imca sat at a desk, leafing through papers trying to find anything on that gremlin they encountered.

“Nothing!” She felt like punching something. She picked up Var and stormed out of the tent.

“Hey.”

She whirled around and found herself looking at Grey. The Omega squad captain.

“What do you want?” She said, crossing her arms.

“We’re gearing up to go find Garret, he disappeared same time and place as your squad member. We were wondering if you want to come? We could use the extra hand.”

Imca thought about it, she did need to get out a little, “Sure, when do we go?”

I'm really bored of this...

Chapter 15

Ebony opened his eyes and rolled out of bed… or at least, the cot he was given. He was tired of sitting around without anything to do. He walked outside and looked up, he felt trapped inside these walls. He started walking towards the nearest stairwell.The morning light filtered through the low fog that floated low over the city. His leather boots made little sound on the metal floor. He ascended and remembered when they were ‘breaking in’ to this city, which he’d learned inhumanly named city 17B. He was disabling the trap, he remembered very clearly making sure not to screw up. They weren’t supposed to be caught till he’d led them to the lab.

He reached the top and peered out over the outside of the wall. The Deconstruction Zone hid under a vast layer of fog, turning it into a sea of nothingness, with small blinks of light where lamps and such stood. He craned his neck left and saw the cluster of lights that was presumably the Knights camp, where Carter was recovering no doubt.

He sighed, he never meant for them to be hurt, it was just too complicated. He had been approached awhile ago and blackmailed, they said that their best ghostmanes would hunt down his squadmates if he didn’t work with them. He wondered now how they knew he was like that, how he would do anything so they wouldn’t be hurt.

“What’re you doin up here?”

Ebony jerked around, it was Garrett. The traitor was leaning against the railing and watching him with a curious look.

“I don’t know, I just needed some air.”

Ebony ignored the suspicious look that Garret gave him.

“I don’t care, so we got a leak that my ‘squadmates’ are going to be trying to rescue us. So the gremlins are going to make it look like we are actually captured.”

“Yeah, alright, tell me when I need to return, I have to think.” Ebony started looking out over the fog again, ignoring the other knight completely.

Ash peeked out from behind his hiding place behind the supply barrels. It felt weird sneaking into a knight base, but at the same time it was easier. He knew all of the routes patrol would take. If anybody saw him he’d be branded a traitor, especially after the shooting which he couldn’t explain.

He focused on the matter at hand, he had to find Ebony, and ask him what he was talking about earlier. He was looking at the Infirmary. A wide range of colored white tents that was back to back with the storage tents.

He counted silently, and in front of him a guard appeared, making a sleepy round. The guard was barely paying attention and surveyed the area lazily before turning around. Ash reached zero and moved out of his hiding place when the guard’s attention was elsewhere. He skirted past and made it to the outside of the infirmary.

What would Carter say? Would he be disappointed that he was arrested? Mad because he got shot by his own team member? Ash mentally prepared himself for any scolding from his leader. He counted the tents and peeked in the one he thought was correct. Inside was a bed, and Carter himself standing up, head down in thought. He’s better already? He slipped in the tent and took a step forward.

“Who’s there.” Carter had his Driver pointed at Ash. Ash took a second to marvel at his speed before making a response.

“Ash? What in Vog’s name are you doing here?” Carter said before he could start.

“I need some answers.” A hundred thoughts raced through Ash’s head.

“First, you answer mine.” He raised the gun, “Why did you shoot me?” His voice was deathly calm.

“I couldn’t control myself, Carter, I tried. There was something in the syringe, you saw it happen to Grey.” Ash said, his voice was quiet, and he didn’t want to sound like he was deceiving.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here? It looks like you came to finish me off, no offense.”

“Ebony knows, where is he?”

“You never knew, did you? Locked up. Ebony never came back, in the confusion he disappeared, along with another on Omega’s team.”

“What?” Ash barely stopped himself from shouting. He was silent, processing the information.

“I’m stuck here healing up, and I heard Imca is going after Eb’. You’re best chance right now would either be going after him yourself or seeing if the group Imca is with won’t kill you on sight.”

Ash looked up, “You’re not reporting me?”

“I can’t endanger my squadmates, I promised myself that.” As an afterthought, he added, “Neither would Ebony.”

Ash took a deep breath, “I’m leaving,”
He turned and slipped out the way he came, and composed himself outside the infirmary. If Ebony was gone, he’d either been kidnapped, or judging from his words before. A traitor.
