Speaking strictly from the given AI for the 2 enemies combatting here...

1.

This is because the trojan's shield blocks all of the tortodrone's attacks except the shard barrage. I would expect the fight to be the trojan cornered fairly quickly, and thus not allowing shards to barrage behind it. Then the tortodrone would endure swing after swing of the trojan until it fell - a rather uninteresting fight when one of the two monsters quickly becomes unable to damage the other.

It is possible that this battle was utilized for the devilites to obtain tortodrone corpses for their necromancy rituals.
