The battle sprites were not what I first expected.

The battle sprite system was fully implemented into the game on July 30, 2013.

For the love of Almire-IMEAN the Spiral Order, someone correct me if I am wrong. The chances are not slim that I am wrong. But if I am right, then wouldn't the one year anniversary for the Battle Sprites be in 10 days? Does OOO have anything planned for us on July 30, 2014? But I digress.

Before we got any information on how they were to function, I had in mind that these familiars would be something like an AI, aiding us through our journeys while independent of our volition along with attributes added to our own (called perks). Even with the information given, some of us (or maybe just I) thought so far ahead as having our battle sprites battle other battle sprites, however that was to take place; such a thing might have required greater diversity among what sprites we have available.

Once I took into consideration the AI that we may accompany, summon, or keep, I had to rethink the idea of an independent AI's aid.

Regardless of how skilled of a technician you may want to be, the mecha knights that other knights employ practically march to their deaths. One by one. The recon rangers stick around long enough to tolerate a world of damage that would kill a regular knight until they feel like leaving. Those poor souls that we have to rescue from time to time are less nimble than Lumbers, attack as doggedly as hungry wolvers (unless they want to keep near you), and are therefore as reliable as that elevator in the crossroads that is always under repair; fortunately they are expendable.

And then the NPCs that accompany you... they are just there. But do they know what a shield is for?

So, while I did not get the independent AI companion that I wanted, I am very appreciative of the very fact that the Battle Sprites were not what I wanted. The lone AI NPC is often cumbersome and in my way. And until I can pin point exactly what bothers me about them, and until those issues can be rectified, I am fine dragging along a sprite that will be with me until I somehow ration an argument and the resources to separate it from me.

From the bottom of my hooves, Thanks OOO. =]

Spiral Knight,
Arelic.

Questions: (Answer what applies to you, I guess)

  • What were your impressions of the battle sprites before any major news came out?
  • What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?
  • Did you end up liking your first sprite?
  • I would ask more questions about what else do you want to become of the sprites but I am certain that there are threads somewhere addressing those very suggestions. Thanks for your attention and time.

Icing on the cake, only provide auxiliary support and DPS
What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?
A spare trinket at best, nothing game altering was going to happen.
Did you end up liking your first sprite?
My maskeraith name 'Zeratul'? Sure, cloaking is good at times and quill does its job just fine. Hex is good when fighting a pack of wolvers, but I just see no incentive in getting it a better harness, the service it provides doesn't justify the price of the harness.

  • This game is going to be more laggier than before!
  • What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?

  • Something unique to add to my playstyle. (Which it did)
  • Did you end up liking your first sprite?

  • I love both of my sprites. I'm mainly using my Masky more though since I'm cheap and rely on natural heating :P (~20 more levels left)

"If you become part of a random group, expect random outcomes."

What were your impressions of the battle sprites before any major news came out?

    - I wondered how they would balance out with everything else in the game, and I admit I was a bit excited :)

What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?

    - That my abilities would be boosted a little, and I would be able to wreck anything that crossed my path. Well, I got the boosted abilities part right. . .

Did you end up liking your first sprite?

    - My first sprite is actually my only sprite, I have no need for another. No one can replace the best Drakon of all Drakons, Mr. Cuddles .__.

What were your impressions of the battle sprites before any major news came out?
I wasn't sure what to expect, really.
What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?
I thought that I would be able to survive longer, and be better in general. I was heavily dissapointed, as battle-sprites just feel like extra attacks that are about as weak as a cheap water pistol.
Did you end up liking your first sprite?
I thought that for how they could have done worse, it was good. I have... Mixed feelings. I liked the battle sprites, but honestly? It just feels like another thing slowing me down.

I think, however- Your idea of having automated battle sprites would be just fine, if you could switch it on and off.

    My first impressions: That

My first impressions: That sprites would make the game go from moderately challenging in some places to incredibly easy. However, I've started to find that having a companion has allowed OOO to ramp up the difficulty in some places so that effective use of your sprite can be the difference between sparking and staying alive.

What I thought was to happen once I got a battle sprite: That I would use it mainly for utility and not for supplementing my damage.

Did I end up liking my first sprite? Not really. I mainly built my Drakon for appearance's sake, which meant having to forfeit the utility of frenzied firestorm.
My second sprite, a seraphynx, became incredibly useful to me with disintegration ray making a mockery of some enemies, heart attack helping the team heal in critical crowded situations, and seraphic aura helping protect me from damage while my shield breaks. The faster recharge is a great bonus for playing defensively.

I like the thought of being able to put your sprite on auto pilot, but I believe having manual control of it is for the better. It allows me to pick the perfect moment to execute each and every skill. Disintegration ray makes vana's mask phase take three seconds if you can have three people with high damage blitz charges at the ready. It also helps killing tortodrones because you can start off with an amazing amount of damage to speed up the fight!

It took you a YEAR to make this thread?

I can't even answer the questions, it's been so long I don't remember my first impressions.

    Sure, I'll answer these.

•What were your impressions of the battle sprites before any major news came out?

When I first heard about the Battle Sprites, I figured that I'd probably be able to play solo forever and ever while sitting back and letting the Sprite kill everything for me. Hooray for being cheap!

•What did you think was to happen once you got a battle sprite?

At first I was disappointed. I got the Maskeraith because of it's invisibility. I was hoping I'd get a game changing ability that I could use to unleash so much chaos.

•Did you end up liking your first sprite?

I love my Maskeraith more than anything else I own. More than my underused weapons and armor, more then my unbreakable resistence to avoid LockDown, and more then all the costumes I own. I quickly found out that a Maskeraith and a Proto Gun is all you need to kill anything!
