Reading that, I'd say they were taken out cause they were extremely annoying (you can't move or do anything for 15 seconds if you get hit with the sleep effect) and too easy (players could regenerate their health quickly by falling asleep on purpose after the monsters were all killed). They might make a comeback at some point, but probably not without some rebalancing.

As far as I know, it is a old area that is no longer available, that features mostly slooms, a sort of slimes that can set you asleep.
