We have landed.
We are all on Cradle.
It's been almost 4 years now.
So where's the love?

Join me,Stirback,to help try to earn Spiral Knight apparel,such as T-shirts,hats,plush(maybe),and other things.
It is unknown if OOO will ever be able to make their own,so this forum post works two-fold:

-First let us,the players,make our own shirts.etc,with our own custom design,and our own personality.This way,we'll be able to make customized stuff with our knights.
-Next,see if SEGA/OOO will make their OWN t-shirts,hats,etc.It would be more broad.

Hopefully,we can get to 100 posts before a admin realizes this has potential and shows more interest.

Unfortunately we can't allow others to distribute it because it violates our
copyright. It's possible that sometime in the future we offer our own
merchandise. If this is something that you and your friends would be
interested in, please let us know on the forums. While I can't make any
guarantees about it, it's possible that we can offer some if we think there is
enough interest from our players.

Honestly, I think OOO just needs to loosen up SK's copyright laws, even if by a little bit. Most copyright laws out their allow streaming and distribution of related items, as long as said items aren't being sold for a profit. So far, no one that I know of has ever broken them aside from the occasional virus sending website, and even then I haven't heard of them in a while.

If OOO did this, then I'm sure we'd be able to see more creative content from the fanbase, like SFM animations or fan-made Advertising and Merchandise.

Spiral Knights is copyrighted. The game Spiral Knights is copyrighted. You can create almost any adapted content but you're not allowed to sell commercially. HOWEVER, a loophole is to sell the creation of the product as a commission, because then the product is used for personal reasons and technically the creator is only selling his service (obviously no copyright), hence there are no copyright infringements. Everyone has the right to own products even with a copyrighted idea, but not everyone has the right to produce a product with a copyrighted idea and distribute them.

The distinction is pretty gray-area sometimes, some companies still don't like their work being sold under that pretense since it's still their intellectual property. Disney and Hasbro are two that I can think of who have sent artists "cease and desists" for selling their skills by drawing copyrighted characters.

I'm finally sitting on a lot of disposable income and am ready and willing to drop a ton of money on real SK merch, and it's a shame that it's taken so long for this to happen.

Maybe with the advent of 3D printing we can find a way to get small statues of our knights. :D There are companies that exclusively sell 3D prints anyway.

Also, @Mystrian:
I've been considering an SK-related tattoo for a couple years now. I have a few ideas for game-related tattoos, just getting a symbol (like the Gremlin icon or something) but I don't know WHERE I want to get it, or which icon. :T

I'd still personally run it by a GM first. :( I was considering selling SK-related prints and while I never got them finished (so nothing to sell yet lol), they had some stipulations and wanted to see the final product before it was printed/they gave the full go-ahead.

Basically you have to use 100% your OWN art if you're going to sell it (so no logos, no screenshots, nothing that you yourself didn't make, including the logo or weapons icons, unless you 100% redrew it yourself). Something for personal use, probably not so bad, but for legal reasons you likely can't go to a t-shirt shop and give them the Gremlin icon and ask to have that printed on a shirt. (They could be sued and likely wouldn't even do it, in my experience. I didn't fully understand copyright law once upon a time and tried to get some Pokemon shirts made once, hahah..)

You are correct. Non-copyright-holders are not allowed to reproduce or redistribute content that copyright holders own. The idea Spiral Knights is copyrighted, which is basically the world "Cradle", the town "Haven", the characters "Spiral Knights", all 6 family mobs and all other literature and lore behind the idea. The game Spiral Knights is also copyrighted, basically all content inside that Spiral Knights folder.

Creating your art based on the idea Spiral Knights is called an adaptation, and by right you own full/most rights over your art under Copyright/Creative Commons Attributes. This is why most artists can create new art based on already existent ideas (e.g. Pokemon, Digimon etc. although I'm not sure if it could also be due to the more lenient copyright system in Japan). It's also possible that under this section of copyright that we can create Spiral Knights merchandise and sell as our own, however, I am not completely sure and anyone who wants to create merchandise outside of "personal use" should still ask for permission.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but what is the purpose of having a "post indicator" on this thread? I mean, we know that players would like this "Spiral Knights apparel", but that post indicator is pretty much... useless (we already have that beside the thread on the forums page). Also, having that doesn't mean, "Hey, if there are 100 posts on this thread, everyone on that thread wants it!". Perhaps having a "vote indicator" is what you meant (not trying to sound like a genius here, but there are about 26 votes on this thread). Sorry if this sounds harsh.

Going back on topic, you have my vote. I'd like to see Spiral Knights merchandise such as hats and shirts come in stores. +1
