but it just occurred to me -- what exactly is that yellow-ish axis thing that's holding the planet? does it serve a purpose? will we ever be able to reach it?

I bet the clockworks are rotating around the axis..
But about the big metal bow outside the planet, I think its just there for the looks :D

Planets
It's just a more visual representation of every planet's axis that it rotates around. You see it on globes too.
Though it makes you wonder, what if Cradle is just a novelty globe for some collector?

Stranger's globe
I bet Cradle is a globe made by the Strangers to collect pieces of other worlds and creatures, INCLUDING US.
No even worse, SNIPES (those little helicopter birdie),
if you take closer look, you can see a hatch behind every Strangers and if you open it, you can see Snipes, controlling it from the inside....
Here is a bigger view of the axis. Clearly, it is to hold the planet in place. Not sure if we can get there though.
