Steam Says the Client is Running When It's Not

I use Steam to play Spiral Knights. But one day, I tried to open the game and Steam told me "The client is already running" when it wasn't even open. I've tried restarting my computer, logging in and out of Steam, and deleting Java from my Task Manager. Although each and every time it said the same thing.

This may help, or may not. Each time I try closing Java and then opening Spiral Knights, a few seconds after I click on the shortcut, my screen goes black for a few seconds and comes back. This probably has something to do with the problem.

Also, my computer is an HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower. It uses Windows 7 Home Premium. My other Steam games work perfectly, too. It's just Spiral Knights with this problem. Hope you have an answer to help me with this. Thank you.

The solution should just be killing the java.exe process in task manager.

You may not be giving it enough time to open up or a recent update caused some incompatibility with the client.
Did you recently update windows or your video card driver?
Have you tried disabling the steam overlay? (This has cause problems for other players.)

I recently had my computer rebooted

I have tried disabling the Steam Overlay, although that didn't seem to work. But I had forgotten to mention that this problem occurred just after my dad rebooted my computer. As this appears to be the reason for this problem, I would like to know if I should try getting it rebooted again.

Not just you...

This is happening to me as well. I assume this is related to the steam client beta, but please do post back if you're on the standard release. I posted a bug about it in the steam beta forum already. Java isn't still running, nor is any other SK-related process, the overlay isn't to blame, the web helpers don't seem to be involved either. I do know a recent beta release fixed an issue with what they referred to as "a certain third-party program" making steam think games were running that weren't, perhaps in fixing that they broke SK.

Either way, for now just use task manager to shut down steam when you finish with SK and hope a fix rolls out before too long.

EDIT: Found the solution, though I think the culprit may still be steam. Firefox seems to be registering as a false positive for some reason. Close firefox, steam stops being confused.

Unfortunately, updating your drivers as a solution makes no sense from a technical standpoint. Still working on the why aspect. If anyone's interested, the steam bug thread can be found here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/352203158...
