Hey so I was wondering if the Snarbolax set effect (sword damage bonus:maximum) can be triggered by just wearing the snarbolax cap and coat, or does it need the shield, sword, and bomb also to trigger it?

To clear this up
The Helm gives Sword Damage Med, as does the armor and the shield. Med is equivalent to a +2 bonus. If you have the helm, armor and shield equipped, you will get +2+2+2=+6, which is Max.
The Helm and Armor alone give only +4, or very high. The Sword and bomb do not offer Damage Bonuses

All of the previous posters are right, and they're giving you useful information, but I suspect that they have missed your precise question.
The short version is: The helmet, suit, shield, sword, and bomb form are a "set" only in that they look similar and they come from the same boss tokens. There are no rules in the game about equipping them all at once, or anything like that. As far as the rules are concerned, they have nothing to do with each other.
The long version is:
* When you wear Snarbolax Cap (not as a costume), all of your equipped swords get damage bonus +2 (Medium) against all enemies.
* When you wear Snarbolax Coat (not as a costume), all of your equipped swords get damage +2 against all enemies.
* When you wear Barbarous Thorn Shield, all of your equipped swords get damage +2 against all enemies.
If you wear more than one of these at a time, then their bonuses add, as explained on the Abilities wiki page. For example, if you wear the helmet and the shield, but Vog Cub Coat instead of Snarbolax Coat, then you get damage +4.
You do not have to equip Barbarous Thorn Blade (the sword) or Dark Briar Barrage (the bomb) to trigger these bonuses. Even if you do have them equipped, Dark Briar Barrage does not get any bonus because it's a bomb, and Barbarous Thorn Blade does not get any more bonus than any of your other swords.
When the armour says, sword damage bonus med, it means you can only get the bonus if you are using a sword. And no, wearing only the helmet or the armour will only grant you a medium damage bonus, you will have to wear both the snarby helm and armour to get the full bonus.
