If you buy 5* gear (or even orbs for 5* gear), then the burden of heating the item will immediately fall upon you, and heat crystals will cost you around 6,300 energy.
If you bought 4* orbs and crafted various weapons and gear from that, then you could immediately heat it while trying to find radiant fire crystals. This might sound like more work, but with 9500 energy, you can get either a single 5* weapon at level 10, or you can get the orbs for a good 2 or 3 sets of 4* gear. While it will be very hard for you to heat your 5* gear when you do get it, you will now have a platform for which to find and attain the rarities that you need, vs. a single weapon.

1. Battle Sprites
2. My Stuff @ Node/102621
3. Some nice gear with UVs
4. Trinket/Weapon slots
5. Wait for a flash sale
6. Prepare yourself for gunner update
7. Nothing and just save up! xD
8. And of course orbs.
~In the end it's your money and your choice on how you use it.

sure you need to heat them up, but still it is a much better way to spend your CEs.
Or, buy a bunch of elite orbs, sell them one by one in AH, get some profit. If you have the patience for it.
Go to bazzar forum, get some high end cosmetics (wings and what not) for you, no use what is so ever other than boosting one's ego.
Buy other games on steam with CE, be sure not to get scammed.
