Before one of the latest patches you could drop belt items by clicking and dragging them onto the ground. As I type this I'm standing next to a superior health capsule with inferior health capsules in my inventory amongst other vials and stuff I don't wanna drop, I don't mean the proto tank things that increase your health since they switch automatically.

inferior vs. superior pills
If I'm reading the original post correctly, he had inferior pills and wanted to replace them with superior pills (e.g. Tier-2 pills vs. Tier-3 pills). That's not a terrible decision, if he values the other pickups currently in his possession.

Teach then to not get hit
The items you mention are called pickups. The change you're describing happened in the 2013-07-30 mega-update. See Release/all to learn more.
You cannot drop pickups any more. To empty a pickup slot, you must actually use those pickups: take the pills, throw the vials, etc. But pills are not actually used unless you're hurt. So, if you're perfectly healthy, you cannot empty a pill slot. Try to get hurt, for example using an exploding block.
So you cannot share pickups with other knights. You cannot move 10 pills from one arena room into the next room. By the way, you can still move pickups between slots, by dragging them. I always keep pills in slot 1, remedies in slot 2, etc.
