Proto Gear, Where did it go?

Ahhh, sorry if I happen to botch this up; it's my first post and all, so I tried to at least see if anyone else had talked about this, but to my knowledge it's not a very big subject, so if anything it's to sate my own curiosity with anyone else who has an opinion or two on the subject.

So, I'm sure everyone's aware of the Proto starting gear correct? Little green sword with a little green gun and a little green shield (later a little green bomb as well), and I'm sure that most people dumped the stuff from use once they got ahold of something better; it's only natural for starting gear right? Still though, I suppose lately I've become a bit curious about the Proto-set as opposed to the rest of the gear.

When you look at the Cobalt "standard" gear, it does strike a distinctive look, but perhaps one that's not very far off the mark from what you would expect. It features a color palate of grays, some blue hues, and a few other rather dusty colors to drive home the standard armor plated knight feel to it. Honestly it looks rather neat (but being standard equipment, there's no glitz or glitter to its specs), but it's nothing that really "stands out" I suppose. Even the rank badges seem to sport the same feel until Vanguard, which still seems on par with the rest spare the gloss coating. Now I understand that it sorta fits the whole "standard issue" thing, but curiously the Proto gear was also considered standard issue, and it all seemed rather unique in a way to me; even the Proto badge that you got for signing up for the news letter is a bright, colorful little badge that glows green, not unlike Lieutenant Feron's own blue crest. In a strange sense, the Proto-set seems to have a very distinct identity to it as opposed to the rest of the gear that relates more directly to the Spiral Order.

All that being said, I suppose I'm just looking for any information on it, what you guys think, or what you guys have heard. While probably not being a very popular opinion, I kinda think it might be interesting to see what the Proto weapons would look like at 5 stars. Sure, they might have no more special abilities than the standard gear, but curiosity is a powerful thing despite the likely outcome.

Straight-Line

Curiousity is a powerful thing. Look at the recent gunner update posts on Gen. D. Wait another week (or til the next day) and theres going to be more

good point

Good point. Proto Gear is a bit weird. Maybe it's the equipment that we used before we landed on Cradle. And the other equipment has been developed since we landed on Cradle, specifically for the threats on Cradle.

Maybe a year ago there was a similar thread about the Cobalt line: Why would this armor be "standard issue", when it is some of the worst armor in the game (status-wise, as well as offense-wise)? And somebody conjectured that it was our pre-Cradle armor. So that doesn't help this thread.

I think it is meant to make us feel like an individual towards the start of the game, even though all of our gear is the same. Later on, we all have different gear anyway as we decide to use different armor sets. Even if we don't decide to use different armor sets, we still have the option to use various costumes.

I think this is likely the case due to the western-sandbox nature (as opposed to being a JRPG) that Spiral Knights used to encompass.

Personally, I like to think the Cobalt lines of gear serve as the 2*+ versions of the Proto gear. As for the missing 1* set, that's really up to debate.
