Recently I was in need of the old inventory item icons (such as the generic shield symbol, which had different colors depending on the shield), and I can't find them anywhere.
I would like to know where I could find them. Are they in the game files? Is there a website where I can find them?
If you can help me, please let me know.

There are items icons in game files, but they're all in pink and ready for RGB recoloring.
Old icons are still on wiki, example: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Equipment-Sun_Shards_icon.png

Yes indeed, there a plenty of old icons on the wiki. Click on any icon picture and you'll get a page like Mtax linked to. I've been using this extensively as of late.

What a nasty tease.
They are old, but too classic to be outdated. However, updating some old icons with new visuals of the same design for certain items (at least new ones) would be well due, considering what has come since the UI overhaul. The Torto Shells and Tortofists are two such examples, to follow the same pattern as the Kat hoods.
On another note, this site has a small compilation of "old" old icons.

Unfortunately, they have been removed following the UI update of (Too lazy to look, around June - August 2013, I believe).
Perhaps they are still buried deep in the in-game files, but that's a job better left for those delvers. If it's still there, perhaps you could swap out a few things here and there - although tampering with the client is highly discouraged.
There is also no website to download them, albeit you could go on Google Images and search for a few of those old icons, but not all of them. Still discouraging to alter any in-game files.
I sense a GM's presense. Maybe. Unlikely.
