For someone who farmed the hell out of all the previous Kataclysm events and got more than 3000 Ancient Pages, I still haven't gotten one single Book of Dark Rituals.
September 2014 Kataclysmic Confrontation Discussion
My data from the May 2014 Kataclysm, as applied to the September 2014 Kataclysm:
1. You must kill 10,000 Kats to get (on average) one book.
2. Four players killing 2,500 Kats will (on average) get one book.
3. Four players killing 15,000 Kats will (on average) get the 6 books required to craft ONE piece of gear.
4. FOUR PLAYERS will have to RUN THROUGH CANDLESTICK KEEP 750 TIMES TO CRAFT ONE PIECE OF GEAR. 1500 times if SS is right about his numbers.
(All of these points are backed up by science and spies.
If that makes you feel sad feelings, maybe you should click both of these links and +1 the threads.
So I just came back from Elsword to see what's been going on in this game.
Kinda disappointed this event wasn't revamped for page trading like others may have said. (I haven't read previous posts so please don't chuck me into a lake) I know this is a reoccuring event, but at least make it possible for one piece of armor to be made whenever it shows it's beautiful face. I've only had three books in my lifetime and I know that's more than most could say.
I love our lord Margrel as much as the next Kat, but telling someone to go find more than five books is a bit much with 0.5% RNGesus. Oh well, more money towards Elsword <3
So what are the odds we'll get a patch today like how mixmaster'a normal damage was
Changed? The Kat body claw/eye/hiss using whiskers seems like another rush-release thing.
No point in actively looking for a book, if I get one... fine... easy money for the wicked whiskers and the BKC afterward... if I don't then I'm still gonna use chaos set. The BKC is only useful for running event thanks to the MSI and I have merc demo to compensate... the events you have to run a lot usually imply killing weak foes... like the BK or the PK... (I have ASI med and just wack BK with it on dmg ultra and kill it in few seconds)
I am sad and a bit disapointed about the new armor, but I can overlook this event since the kat even has been completed for me the last time it went around, got all 4 mask... you can shove your armors where I think...
Plus they are useless... Oh yeah you have dmg max on everything, now go get that CTR VH and ASI Max that my chaos + trinket + sprite grants me with your UV and THEN you can move faster than me, big whoop
Edit: I see them has "insanely grindy" costumes
In an effort to reduce the ideas spread between multiple threads...
Bopp listed another interesting point to another discussion that should be present in this thread as well.
LDers that wish to obtain this armor will find that the only difference between the 4* and 5* black kat armor will be 1 pip of health and slightly more ice resist (maybe... Zeddy knows more about resists than I do).
Don't they realize they made the ONLY Shadow Defensive Bomber armor completely impossible for most of the player base to get?
Who is the person pushing these ideas? Seriously, they don't think this is a game, it's just a business to them. While that is, at the very core, the point of it all, shouldn't there be some passion towards making a fun and exciting game?
With the exception of the Tortodrones, it's been promo after promo after promo, and while this is a step in the right direction, it's only a single step out of many. We have new gear, isn't that fantastic? No, because a small percentile of the community will be able to have it.
I don't really post on the forums much (or at all) but hey, this calls for it.
I've been playing since 2012, and I've experienced the kat event thrice. Each event I ground and ground, and I never did find a book. I didn't really care though, I always thought to myself "hey, you'll get it next time! :D". I need to go to the past and tell myself "No, you won't."
People are claiming that the BK spawn rates are up. I'm not sure if this is true, since the rate I'm finding kats at is 2 per 1 and a half hours. Perhaps its my horrid luck. Not sure. But that aside, considering it takes so long to find BK's, and that a book has such a low drop chance, and that you need 6 books to get the new armor (or alternatively pay 5k ce per invite) ... I'm loosing hope. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I don't think I'm going to have much fun this event (didn't have fun at the other kat events either, but gonna have less at this one). Another thing which bugs me, as it does various other people on this thread, is the fact I get no compensation for the dozen times I slayed magrel with my friends BEFORE the accursed whiskers. And may I mention the madness behind the normal and BK raiments both costing the same amount of whiskers?
Well... if you guys want that in short....
GG OOO. You made the grindyest event in the game grindyer, and have successfully made a handful of players rage till they ran out of rage. Might as well bring back the rage promo. Would fit in perfectly.
Wait, why does Eury say-
"With Wicked Whiskers, dropped for all present party members, the following new costume items can be made:"
And then go on to list actual new armors etc.?
they're probably so used to announcing costumes that subconsciously they confuse actual armors with costumes already.
What I'm finding the most infuriating about this updated event is that OOO thought tying the whiskers to the Margrel battle was a great idea. To make matters worse, they are ignoring everyone's suggestion on improving the event and bringing the grinding back to a sane and reasonable level. And each day that passes guarantees there'll be a crapstorm if they "fix" this when the event happens again.
Can anyone actually explain to me why the heck they'd even make BK helms for 3* and 4* this time around when there's no 4* requirement for the 5*?
This whole event reeks of poor execution. I can't help but feel the new armors was essentially OOO sticking a thumb in our collective eyes and saying " HAHA GRIND THIS SUCKERS!".
Who the heck is actually making the decisions for this game anymore?
They can always just give the people who bought into the whiskers some form of compensation. Just like they gave everyone who participated in Margrel fights compensation for the fact that they were rewarded without whiskers... oh wait...
I don't post much, but this is worth speaking about. I enjoy playing this game quite a bit, especially when events roll around. If the fabled Gunner Update ever gets released, I will be on to play that, too.
However, when I see something as blatantly absurd as this whisker debacle has been, I have to say something. It leaves me really concerned about the future direction of the game if this event stands as it is without any tweaking. It almost guarantees I will not be funding this game beyond what I've already contributed (which isn't a lot, but I'm less incentivized to pay in or even promote this game among friends). If future events have this kind of grinding put into place, then count me out. And I HATE saying that.
I guess I'm finding it hard to be upset about not being reimbursed for the prior Margrel fights. I mean, we agreed to fight him knowing full well if we had the book, we got the Cowl. If we were part of the team fighting him, we had a blast during the fight but knew we would be empty handed at the end.
Sure, I wish I would have held off on my Margrel fight if I knew I'd get whiskers now, but then I would have spent a year and a half without the BKC.
Just popping into the angry mob for a sec to ask; if you have already summoned Margrel and gotten the Black Kat Cowl before, do you get another if you summon Margrel again? Or do you just get a whisker and some pages?
I'd assume you don't get another cowl, but figured I'd ask. For reasons.
I have no problem with the people complaining about how hard it is to obtain BKR. Of course it's frustrating.
I do have a problem with the people complaining that they should be compensated for previous Margrel fights. The rules of the game change, and you have to accept it. Items that were valuable become less valuable (DA after its charge change, haze bombs after nerf), and items that were less valuable become more valuable (Chaos).
I'm not mad about past fights either. Which is why I'm saying that people can understand that it's for the best when these things change, provided that it is actually for the best.
Just made an already troublesome event even MORE troublesome. And pretty much nothing worth the grinding OOO wants for these 'new costumes'.
The problem with this event is that my effort and dedication are not enough to grant me the rewards. I am forced to mindlessly run a single level in the game in the hope to find an enemy which has a low chance of appearing with a lower chance of dropping a material which i need 6 in order to get a single piece of 5* gear. It's an event based on luck and RNG, i have no control over my grinding, i keep running the same level over and over again but i still can't find what i want. I don't mind grinding, the rewards should be given to those who grinded for them, not randomly given to anyone. Even if the gear is OP i can't get it by putting effort and dedication in the game, it is ok to make it hard to obtain, but right now it is rather absurd than hard. I myself own a Black Kat Cowl which i got in May after 4 days of grinding, while my friends who grinded 2 weeks still don't have a BKC. Right now i have 283 ancient page tokens, i am putting effort into the game, i feel like i should be rewarded for it, but my rewards are low and i can't enjoy them at all. I agree that the Black Kat Raiment should be hard to obtain, but it should be awarded to those who are putting effort into the game. Right now i think the best solution for this whisker thing would be allowing players to craft a Flawed Book of Rituals which would summon an incomplete Margrel who drops only whiskers for 200 pages, this idea would require effort and dedication, people would be rewarded for their grinding, not get a mediocre piece of gear as consolation prize or a "maybe next time unlucky one".
Zethalan
I feel the same way. But want to add on top of it. I have a hard time understand new armors that are not Black Kat. Will anyone bother crafting anything other than Black Kat Raiment, considering it gives nothing over BKR? They require same materials, but lose in every way possible...
Why make them at all? Nobody's going after them, unless they're really interested in one of other combinations (or armor's uniqueness).
The only reason i see in crafting the other sets is to use them as a costume, except for the Kat Hiss set since it is so far the only bomber gear with shadow defense and it provides CTR on bombs, which BKR doesn't. All the other sets and even the Kat Hiss one are mediocre compared to the Black Kat set. I think it is ok to let people craft them with Kat Tribe Fetishes instead of Whiskers since they are A LOT weaker than the Black Kat one.
As soon as I checked what the next promo was, I was thrilled to have a chance to get the Black Kat Kowl (I know its spelled "Cowl" but I like to use the "K" instead). I went to check what these armors were and saw that they were meant to complement the already existing Kat helms but I was more surprised that they actually added lesser versions of the Black Kat line. So I decided to get a Black Kat Hood to start out with and cooked it (meaning to "heat" it) so that I can upgrade it, in which all I needed was a whisker and was lucky enough to get one to upgrade to a Black Kat Mask which I have been using from here on out. Since then I stopped hunting Black Kats for the book... Since I can just throw 70 pages and luckily join a friend who got the book and get that one Whisker I need.
Seeing what it takes to get any of the armors and let alone the Black Kat rainment. This event is clearly... FΦcked, obviously someone's gotta be grateful to make get-togethers if the party host has the book to let everyone get a whisker or OOOs will have to up the Black Kat spawn rate along with the Book drop rate. I can see plenty of problems with this event considering the Whiskers and the rate of the book dropping.
I didn't feel like playing Spiral Knights until the Gunner Patch comes out but getting the Black Kat Mask turned it around for me. Its not the Kowl, but its surprisingly close enough and feels like I am running with a Damage version of the Swiftstrike Buckler with a 4* helmet that gives me Damage and Movement Speed increase. Practically the BoDR and/or BKK is worth for winning the lottery to me than actually using it and I got plenty of Shining Fire Crystals that I will quickly max out my BKM and get its full defensive power out.
In this event, I'll just rake Vana for his Radiants with this Mask I got.
Quick analysis we had me and a guildmate yesterday
Black Kat is considered THE best set for everyone but it is not for me
Chaos set is more versatile, it is cheaper to get sword, bomb and gun dmg trinket, asi on sprite, a swiftstrike buckler and an ASI low on your items to have the same power than a black kat set..
The CTR is huge for me since I own 17 swords, 12 bombs and 14 guns... having CTR VH and ASI low/high on them all would be too pricy. The only people that I KNOW will use the BKC and BKR are people who uses the same weapons and has CTR VH / ASI H on them all.
And when the question was asked: Would I buy a 10-15k ce weapons just for the UV? No... and my question to my guildmate was: Do you own new weapons? No, getting CTR VH on every item cost too much to hoard on them.
Unlike me, i own all obsi weapons and my obsi edge as ASI med on it...
So even today
Chaos > BKC in term of ratio $$/power
Okay, but your calculation leaves out Movement Speed Increase entirely, which is unfair to BKC/BKR. A knowledgable player will want to optimize ASI, CTR, damage bonus, and MSI, not just the first three.
Consequently, neither Black Kat nor Chaos is unequivocally better than the other. One offers damage+6 and MSI+2, while the other offers damage+4 and CTR+4. Whether one beats the other depends on your personal priorities, including the UVs on your weapons.
That said, it is now theoretically possible to simultaneously max out ASI (+6 on swords/guns, +3 on bombs), CTR (+6), damage bonus (+6), and MSI (+4), on all types of weapons against all targets:
* Black Kat Cowl (damage+3, MSI+1)
* Black Kat Raiment (damage+3, MSI+1)
* Swiftstrike Buckler (ASI+3)
* heat level 10 (CTR+2)
* Swift Steps II perk (MSI+2)
* ASI+3 on all weapons through UVs or trinkets
* CTR+4 on all weapons through UVs or trinkets
Maxing out stats like this simply cannot be done with Chaos gear, even though it is very powerful.
but the second I get the six whiskers for my BKR I'm going to quit SK until the kats leave.
I love this game. I really do. That is the ONLY reason I'm willing to force myself to play this event, which I wholeheartedly do not enjoy, to get something I want. I do not enjoy this event. I hate it, every time.
I want the BKR. It's the only shadow armor with MSI. I want the Kat Hiss armor too. It's the only piece of shadow bomber armor in the game... But it's totally not worth going through all this twice. I don't even want to do it once.
OOO, you have to fix this for next time. If you want to keep BK gear as a super-duper-special-rare-end-game set that's fine. Remove the whisker requirements on the other pieces so at least we have something we can work towards--"grinding while praying for manna from heaven five times" is not fun.
Players will do a lot of stuff that isn't fun but they won't do it often. They won't do it for long. You already have regular "Is SK dead?" threads and people loudly whinging about the construction of this event. Consider this a huge customer service move, to please your player base. We will love you for it.

Well they still have time to fix this event. Back in february when we had the March of The Tortodrones the Fiendish ID Cards required orbs of alchemy to craft, but it made them quite expensive since you had to pay 10kcr to craft plus the sparks you needed since the event was also hard, but they removed the orbs of alchemy so the Fiendish Cards got a bit cheaper and we could enjoy/grind the event more easily. They could do the same thing with this Kataclysmic Confrontation. We already came up with some good ideas, now they could just take one of our suggestions, implement it, extend the event a lttile bit and everything would be fine, just like they did with MoTT. I hope they don't let the event end like this since some people (including myself) are hoping a for a change with wednesday's patch, and some of these people might start spreading their hate and sadness in the forums for not being able to achieve one of the new rewards like Fangel stated in this thread.

If we could like, trade ancient pages to fight Margel and get those whiskers(and only whiskers!), that would make this grind much more viable.
I mean, in Grinchlin assault, players had to both rely on skill and RNG. If you got to the top of the mountain, you felt proud for just getting there. Finding one of the rings was icing on the cake to make you feel like royalty.
It was a grind + RNG that was done right. Tortodrones do something similar and have two instances of RNG: first, fiends in the clockworks (which have specific scenario rooms where you are ensured glyphs), secondly the tortodrone shells themselves. You could get up to 6 shells, or a minimum of 2.
Also, if anyone knows, are the whiskers an item drop? If so, does this mean that players who are dead won't get this super rare item? That would be another kick to the face.
I like the event, I'll be honest, but I don't like the fact that I have
A) A huge stockpile of ancient pages,
B) No way to fight a super fun and exclusive boss,
C) No way to unlock any of the new exclusive content. In the ~=1000 pages I've collected across events, I have found one book of dark rituals. That's about 300 black kats I've encountered(You can take off some pages because prestige mission). According to statistics, I should have gotten 3 book drops, but alas I have found only one.
RNG is a fickle mistress. Why we trust her with our new, exclusive content is beyond me.
