Why?
So more people play it.
If you haven't guessed.
Spiral Knights needs a TV ad.
Last I checked, there was hardly any gaming ads on TV, because your target audience aren't people who watch TV. The most I've seen is skylanders ads on childrens' shows, but it was more advertising the toys than the game.
Also advertising is hella expensive, especially commercials. Some small static/flash ad on a website is nothing in cost compared to even a 10 second ad on TV.
Honestly, OOO really does need to invest in better advertising. If it weren't for a friend literally shoving this game down my throat in 2011 (I refused to get SK for 6 hours until I gave in to his demands), I would have absolutely no idea this game exists. I've honestly seen it NOWHERE else.
Throwback to the ToonTown commercials anyone?
Those MMOs they advertise on the TV usually come with a catch - They say they offer a free trial, which is like what - 3 days? 1 week?, something extremely limited. And then to play more they usually make you pay into the game. (Throwback again to Toontown 10$ for one month? Such BS - lol when I was a child my parents were like "lol nope"). Of course only large scale companies, like Disney could afford to pull this money draining idea to life and make a lot off of it.
But you know what we're dealing with here, a *small* company which is attached by a string to a large company. There's also the large factor that Spiral Knights is yes, an MMO, but one that's rated 13+, so it would not be in the company's best interest to be advertising for people of a younger audience... it's going against their own terms.
The best thing the OOO could do for advertising this game is on more "age-appropriate" sites, which is what they currently do, barely, but still do. They already run on multiple clients, so that's how that advertising goes. - Under the method of "Games you might like", or something. (Steam, Aeria games, Kongregate, ect, that's all I know off the top of my head)
Armor Games
And an ad would probably cost more than it would bring in.
I think that the best way to advertise SK would be to first improve upon it, remake it to where all complaints have been lifted, cut back on the greedy feel to promotions (500 dollars for a uniquely upgraded sword? Is that the game that we want to play? Costumes are fine though), then to release the core. That would get everyone that used to play it back, and then they would all invite their friends to try it again with them.
Even though an ad on TV is expensive with all the promotions going on right now I think OOO actually has the money now to pull a commercial off. The only problem is where to put the commercial. I'm thinking that cartoon network is the best bet since most of the audience is 13+. Shouldn't be that bad
I really agree Three Rings should do more advertising, since all this game needs is more p(l)ayers. Then the market would be better, there would be a reason to focus on the development of SK, there would be more parties, etc.
Thing is, TV ads are expensive. And if there's one thing SEGA and OOO would be having troubles with, it would be money.
Though if they got more ads on games like Roblox or on Steam, they'd probably do much better, at a cheaper cost.
