Net lag -> rubberband into a wall -> crash

I often have net lag in the evenings. I'll be running through Haven, the game will seem to freeze for a few ticks, and when the game recovers I'll find I've run much further than I had intended. Such are the joys of living in a small town.

Occasionally when the game recovers from such a freeze, I'll find myself in an impossible position. I'll be inside a wall, an NPC, or such. I'm completely unable to move, as none of my neighboring spaces are legal positions either. Usually the game will crash, sometimes immediately, sometimes after a few seconds. No error messages, just suddenly back to the desktop.

It happened twice tonight in Haven. (Oddly, it seldom happens if I'm soloing in the clockworks. Perhaps there's less info to communicate when I'm solo, and therefore less chance of the game totally going whonkers?)

Is there some way the game could catch such conditions, and fail more gracefully than a sudden crash? Or at least is there a way I can force a proper core dump, so you can trace it back? I'm running Ubuntu, BTW.

Huh? Freeze as in graphical freeze, ie 0fps, or some sort of internet freeze/disconnects?

I'm not entirely sure how to

I'm not entirely sure how to tell the difference. I get plenty of both types on busy evenings. It seems to be the first: freezes as in 0fps, the game just stops. I also get the latter - I can move around but nothing I do affects objects around me - but I don't think that's what I'm referring to here.

Mornings are much better suited to this game.

PS: I should add: This time when I restarted SK and logged back in, the game seemed to remember that I was supposed to be in Haven. It started loading Haven instead of the Ready Room. When it got to 100% - before actually drawing Haven - wham! It crashed again back to the desktop.

I waited 10 minutes and logged in again. This time it took me to the Ready Room and was ok.

problem is gone

Followup: The problem hasn't occurred since updating the laptop to Ubuntu 14.10, in spite of my attempts to make it happen. Since that update also fixed another SK crashing problem, I'll assume the two were somehow related.
