Nope. Just that nowadays, people call it shield bumping.
Can be found here in the Spiral Knights Wiki Shieldbearer Guide.

No, I figured it out; it seems that lower level shields bump less. That or my proto shield is cursed.

Proto shields can't shield bump. All the others can. Some people may actually use the Proto Shield's lack of bumping for melee advantages, but it is highly risky and probably not the smartest thing to do all the time anyways.

The fact that lower-star shields bump less seems not to be covered in the Shieldbearer's Guide. So we should add it.

Higher shield rating means

Higher shield rating means stronger bump, 5* shields have the strongest bumps.

But can't you shield bump with other 0* shields? Or am I mistaken?

That's interesting. Maybe it is directly tied to star level and not shield type. I haven't bothered to look into this before.
