Just a couple of questions out of curiosity: How much does it cost to pay the upkeep fee (or whatever it is called) for those massively luxurious guildhalls? And how much has been invested in outfitting/decorating them? (If you don't which I am referring to, then just go see for yourself. They are open.)
I have toured a few, and they have everything imaginable--and they are huge. I am impressed, but also curious who could be so rich.
Nicely done.
I don't mean to pry if GMs don't want to reveal.
Cheers.
Happy New Year!

can compute it for yourself

Maybe someone will chime in with the answer you want. But until then you can compute it yourself, or at least estimate it. Read the links in the "Design Mode" section of "Guild Hall".

Here's a round up of a realistic minimum investment for a functional guild. If starts getting fancy somewhere after the 20 million crowns mark.

Choose right, choose guildless! no more wasted crowns for a huge empty space!!!

(I know there's more to a guild than the guild hall so don't need to point that out kthxbai)

Opinions...

Well, I actually had the idea that it must be costing hundreds of thousands (millions?) of crowns to furnish and the additional tens of thousands of crs to upkeep, so I guess my real inquiry was, "WHY?": Why would anyone invest so much for something so,... how I shall I say politely,...without too much significance?
Invariably, those massive guildhalls are empty of any activity, so I am amazed at the excess. How/why would anyone spend undoubtedly so much of real money for something so....without much (any?) significance?

Am I alone in thinking that guildhalls and its "upkeep fees" system is a waste of expenditure? Do members of such luxurious guildhalls actually do anything there?--auction house, crafting machines, vendors, practice range, etc...
What do SK players think of the "usefulness" guildhalls in general?

I ask because I don't understand the "excess"-or, maybe I am just really poor and this is normal. (?)
Thanks.
cheers.

I've use the GH training in my GH for comparing weapons with various boosts.

Past that, it's all about the guild chat.

If you are smart and fill a room with furnishings BEFORE buying another wing, you can live off a small cozy guildhall with 3 rooms, a veteran's lounge, auction house and random merchants for only 5k a week. As for the cost for filling those rooms... Well I furnished my own room in my guildhall for about 200k crowns total, while most of my guildies who share a room with another only spent about 80k to 120k.

As for why it's expensive, it's because players needed a reason to buy then sell energy. At the time the Guildhall update was introduced, the energy price was approaching the 9k mark. Shortly afterwards it dropped towards the more reasonable 7k mark (and then slowly began rising again). Although they reduced the upkeep cost later to make it more reasonable for smaller guilds.

EDIT**
Also, the guildhall is a great non-laggy alternative to sitting around haven chatting about something completely unrelated to Spiral Knights (another reason why it's better to have a small cozy guildhall instead of a freakin palace of emptiness).

Answering #4:

First of all, believe it or not, that "waste" is nescessary. Guildhalls as well as costumes are huge crownsinks and needed to remove excess money from the game. Without them, your crowns would inflate and become absolutely worthless.

Why bother with maintaining a hall?

  • Private Auctionhouse. It's very convinient to do your business without your chat being flooded with public chatter and constantly getting trade/friend requests.
  • Guild Training hall. You don't need it often, but when you want to test your gear, it's invaluable.
  • The hall makes your guild stick together. Members who have invested in it are less likely to leave.
  • A luxorious hall helps recruiting new members as it basically says: we are here to stay and we know how to play the game.

In a nutshell, you are throwing a huge amount of money at marketing your guild. And it's money well spent if you do it right. A guild full of endgamers provides opportunities you normally don't have access to.
