What's the meta with you?

Hullo hullo all. Okay, before I begin, lemme give you a lil' bg on m'self. Don't worry, it's just a lil'; not enough to hurt.

Basically, I left Spiral Knights more than a year ago. A search of the forums indicate that the great Drought of Radiants began in October 2013, which means I probably left the game in November or December 2013. It was only meant to be a short hiatus, but real life caught up with me.

The point is this; I've been away for a long time. So what's changed?

I've been checking out the forums and chatting with random strangers in the game and it seems not much changed outside of the recent Gunner Update?

Are we still experiencing a Radiant shortage? Have the drop rates been increased or are they the same as the initial nerfing? What's the current meta right now? I was a bomber before, so I'm curious if we had any new bombs or swords in the last year.

So basically, just asking, how are y'all?

I'll link you to the announcements forum since someone else will anyway.

Radiants were made slightly less rare, 26+ mostly (rare on 25) instead of 28+ (rare on 27) like they were after the initial change.

Chaos gear is still popular but also you see people using BK gear (there's an armor now that matches the Black Kat Cowl, you get damage bonus max on everything with the set as well as more MSI).

Don't think there were any new bombs other than reskins, same deal with swords too (although they made a Leviathan reskin for a promo that sometimes does stun on charge) Oh, and a 1* cutter too.

Flowchart's summary is good, but you should read the announcements that he linked, for completeness. Here is another place for you to read them, in one giant page.

Oooh, they're 26+ now? If I recall, 28+ was Vana right?

That doesn't sound too bad.

Man, people seem to still run with Swiftstrike Bucklers? Guess there's been no change to that meta?

Man, I was expecting to be overwhelmed by lots of new changes. And to be fair, I'm not at all sure about the new guns. But I was kinda expecting more after a 1 year hiatus...

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, outside of tougher areas like danger missions/shadow lairs you still see a lot of Swiftstrike Bucklers/Barbarous Thorn Shields.

Oh they also added some harder missions (Grinchlin Assault and March of the Tortodrones) but they were only temporary during events.

Aww, a pity I missed them. I guess they'll return in time.

Hmm, Tortodrones. They were mere rumor when I left.

They still sort of are, you don't get to directly fight them even in the event, just 2 "corrupted" versions

@OP

Just as a tip, I wouldn't suggest that you heat your 5* shields at all. They don't get much better as you level them up, and Radiants are rare enough to warrent it.

People still complain

Radiants aren't terrible, but aren't too great either sadly.

The new guns made magnuses amazing and Iron Slug is now like, super viable.

New armor lines are the only thing that should confuse you, however if you just care about your damage output then glass cannon gears already are around.

We have about 3 reoccuring events now: Kataclysmic Confrontation, Shroud of the Apocrea, and March of the Tortodrones. One is a grindfest for black kats, one is a spooky game of tag with Mr. Tentacles, and the last one is pretty much pay your crowns to your party leader so you all can die a few times to overtimers, greavers, and giant tortoises. Last two are incredibly fun, however turned into a grindfest because they're limited time only.

The game's meta is still pretty much "wear chaos gear and bring a blitz", however now you can do more than just charge-attack that gun. So that's a plus I suppose. If you're someone who just plays for fun, I'd recommend just keep playing for fun.

@Oohnarak - Again, thanks for the info. I'll have to wiki 'em, see if they're considered tough or if they drop exclusive crafting loot.

@Autofire - I think I've already heated my shields long ago. The only thing I need now is to farm Vana so I can upgrade my Obsidian Crusher.

@Fangel - I'm quite interested in the guns now that you mention it. I used to be a gunner before being a bomber, but I found bombing much more exciting as my guns weren't doing much damage. I mean, I could keep myself from dying as a gunner, but always felt like I wasn't contributing as much to my party as I would have liked.

For some reason, I've never been a fan of the Kats. Couldn't even bring myself to farm for the hat. I remember I got decent in Shroud, although I died a lot when it initially started. I have no memory of how to play it now. I was already facing game fatigue when it first came out though, so I couldn't bring myself to farm all the weapons. Never done March though.

Yeah, sounds like there's no change to the meta... how about in pvp? Any changes there?

@All - Thanks for the responses. I'm just tryin' to start a convo and such, get back in da community groove. by the way, is it me or was the gunner update already rumored as far back as late 2013? I seem to recall hearing about it as far back as then. Does that mean it took a WHOLE YEAR to do the update?

Pretty much. Also, they released a preview of it last May and just released it last month with (supposedly) the same bugs and all.

Sadly yes.

Took about a year to release it at least. From what I can tell they added gear descriptions, so that's a thing!
(Not really much of a thing but still)

The PvP scene has changed a bit with the pulsar change. It's harder to make walls of pulsar bullets now and we have a boomerang gun that is hilariously annoying to recons (which is my primary class in lockdown) that inflicts shock and has a tendency to lag my game whenever it's shot. Other than that PvP is still pretty much achieve DMG bonus: Maximum as a striker and forget to play the objective. Unfortunately there are players who are wearing a full black kat suit, which means they have full freeze resist, max damage, and MSI: medium. Let that soak in for a moment. Granted, they aren't super common, but if you don't have the connection they do you'll feel it.
I'm still waiting on a curse haze bomb to mix up lockdown as the most popular gear has negatives to curse.

I'm also returning after a while away, so salutations.

I don't know a dang thing about PvP, but at least for the clockworks the most important new guns are the crazily updated Magnus/Tundrus type and the added Shadow Autogun. Magnus/Tundrus has very heavy knockback, but it knocks the monster backward rather than away- that is, it knocks monsters whichever directions their backs are facing. > < Projectile collision seems to still be a bit flaky, but despite that they're right up there with Autoguns and Alchemers now.

The 3 new Blasters, 2 new Pulsars and 1 new Antigua probably don't need explaining beyond what you can see on the wiki and in-game. Catalysers have been turned inside-out, with sticky bomblets now being the uncharged attack and having drastically reduced damage. In addition, the bomblets also inflict 1 damage upon sticking and now they break stone blocks, detonate blast cubes, etc. The giant pile of new armor items seems to mostly just make visiting Basil for weapon recipes a little more frustrating, especially if you're not a gun specialist.

I think the global gun animation changes are emphasising Autoguns a bit more than before, but it could be just me, so take with a grain of salt. Oh, and those changes include breaking the easiest, laziest switch-shooting technique, forcing us to learn to do it the harder but more powerful way.

Professional derailer of threads and comments has arrived.

Sadly that's a truth for almost every competitive game with a PvP aspect, some people just need to prove themselves on a game or get obsessed with being the best of the best and they feel enraged when they should be playing games for fun, not to try and self-proclaim yourself #1 player of all times probably holding your ego up up till it reaches the sun (and then it will probably burn as you claim yourself to be a god)

That is the reason I stopped getting into lockdown, I like playing guardian but hardly anyone plays with me. I try to shield others but they don't even care about my shield and go out of the protection of my aura to get their glorious kill, (or death) Everybody plays alone, even while I almost always get some decent damage as a guardian (often 7-9k) I still get criticized with comments like "Nice UVs noob, why no more damage?", completely ignoring the fact that I actually cap and try using my class like it was intended...

But honestly it's kinda the game's fault for not being properly balanced that guardians and Recons became underused classes, after all my guardian shield can be broken by a single hit of a damage max GF/DA/Acheron, how much protection can I provide to my allies if I can barely protect myself from a single attacker? :/

I cannot speak much for Recons but from what I've experienced it's a bit more difficult to use class and it also requires good timing and fast reactions wich is something that me and my little red bar cannot accomplish >.<

SO YEAH, LD is still as crappy as always! but now with a little more gun.

@PVP stuff

In all seriousness, though, Spiral Knights isn't meant to be PvP. It's meant to be PvE. You see, the balance is better for PvE than PvP. People getting obsessed with it really should be playing Dota 2 or something more...competitive.
