Hey, I stopped playing spiral knights about 2 years ago, back when mist energy was a thing, crystal energy cost over ~9k cr, and the Jelly King was the go-to grind.

I am considering coming back, and i'm wondering, is there anything I should know before I start again? The arcade was useless when I left, is it still?

All these new drops, fire crystals and orbs of alchemy, whatup?

How much could I get for my unbound haunted aura?

is polaris still the best gun? (i like my polaris... i hope it is)

are unique variants rarer now? becuase of the new-ish crafting system?

pets? cmon.

Anything else I need to know...

thx in advance

Welcome back..

1. Vanaduke is the go to grind.
2. As for Arcade, it is what it is.
3. Fire crystals, orbs, etc.. you will need to wiki that up and study a bit. (It's "kind of" messy at first go.)
4. Haunted Aura-refer to AH pricing. (In my opinion, not one of most sought after auras.)
5. Polaris is still annoying for some (lol), still useful as always.
6.UVs can now be "purchased"--but don't get your hopes high that good things will come of that.
7. Pets--very useful (Seraphynx), but they have "overpowered" the player now (in my opinion), so game is less challenging. Expensive to level them up,
but if you want to be overpowered, get one.

Good luck.
Cheers.

Release notes

If you want to know all of the changes specifically and in detail, then read the release notes:

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Release/all

The Arcade is a place where you can play Spiral Knights. If you enjoy playing Spiral Knights, then consider using the Arcade. If you don't enjoy playing Spiral Knights, then don't play Spiral Knights at all? Also, the Arcade is particularly useful for rare recipes, arenas, and danger rooms.

Orbs cost the same amount as the old crafting system, except that sometimes you get them for free. The scarcity of 5-star fire crystals make 5-star items difficult to heat. This is the main complaint on the forums for the past year.

I don't know prices for Haunted Aura. Ask in the Bazaar forum, or watch the Auction House as Honeydieu said.

Polaris was never the best gun. But it's a useful tool for crowd control, when used well. And you might be interested to know that there are now freeze+shadow and fire+elemental variants.

I don't know whether unique variants are rarer now. The more important change is that abilities are easier to get from other sources, due to buffed armor, sprite perks, and trinkets. So in some sense UVs are less important. Also Punch now lets you keep a UV while rolling for additional UVs.

Battle sprites are kind of fun. Even if you don't want to use yours, the perk is basically a free trinket slot with a variety of valuable trinkets to stick in it.

Newsflash

EDIT:I got ninja'd by Bopp.Danmit.

Elevators dont cost energy anymore.

Crafting now uses Orbs of Alchemy instead of energy, wich you can find as drops from boxes.

They added dificulties: Normal, Advanced and Elite.Protip: aways go Elite, you'll cash in much more crowns.

Theres some new variants of many guns that were added in the Gunner Update.
Also a bunch of gunner armors that still cant beat Chaos set since, well, Chaos set.
Iron Slug is a good gun now.

Oh yeah, speaking of guns, the Pulsar line got some nerfs.

They added Battle Sprites, little flying cuties that can hold a free UV for you, be it status, weapong damage , speed, etc. They can also do a thing every 30-10 seconds or so (should you ever remember to use them).

You can now Dash and do a Shield Bash; go find out what these things do yourself.

Also, lots of prize boxes that you'll never miss.

easy and weak

You should try a variety of weapons, because changing play styles is a big part of the fun of this game. If you're a gunner, then you should definitely try all styles of gun --- blasters, catalyzers, etc.

Pulsars and antiguas are both on the "easy but weak" end of the spectrum. Try some alchemers, autoguns, and maybe the new-style magnuses. These guns are harder to use than antiguas and pulsars, but more rewarding, both in damage and in satisfaction.

I tried autoguns, didnt like.

I tried autoguns, didnt like. too much standing still.

I have 2 alchemers, and I use the shadowtech extensively vs slime but i find that the clip size is too small for my liking, although the bounce is nice.

Never tried a 'new-style magnus'.

Well there was the whole "gunner update"

The gunner update happened, so if you call yourself a gunner you have a lot of new toys to play with.

Highlights of the update:

  • Magnus charges pierce enemies. It's like a gun-brandish, except it has a normal variant. There's also a shadow variant now.
  • Autoguns are more mobile now. You aren't rooted in place for as long with standard attacks. There's also a shadow variant now.
  • Guns do not slow you down anymore while charging.
  • 36 new gunner armors which are confusing at first but have a naming system if you want to learn them.
  • Pulsars have lowered damage but faster projectile speeds. Doesn't outclass alchemers now when not switch shooting
  • Catalyzers were inverted. Charges now do damage and regular shots create orbitals.
  • Blasters got a full specialized-damage line for everything, and we got a piercing antigua

That should be everything you need to know from the gunner update. Alchemers are mobile powerhouses if you know how to use them, and autoguns are still on the top in terms of DPS, and have a viable standard attack now.
Make a few other guns and see how it works for you! Granted you'll also learn about the end-game grind if you're in the third tier and need to get those radiants.

agree and disagree

I agree that there are "too many" new gunner armors. Huge swathes of them will rarely be crafted by anyone.

But they should not be confusing. Choosing among them amounts to three simple choices that are mostly independent of each other: What damage protection do you want? What status resistances do you want? What offensive bonuses do you want?

For more detail on these choices, read my post here.

Hey, thanks! The linked post

Hey, thanks! The linked post was actually very helpful.

So these new armors are basically meant to specialize against a single monster family.

Not really family

They're more to specialize for any scenario. Want to take down beasts and shock beasts get to you? Go for it. Fire fiends the worst thing ever? You've got it. Poison constructs making you mad? You have defense for that! You just want an overall good elemental resisting freeze resist armor? Lucky for you, it's right here!

You can make gear that specializes for any scenario really. If you get into the lockdown scene, you can be specialized even further.

why those two?

I'm glad that you found my link useful. And thanks for saying so.

You want a piercing gun? What about the other ones, such as Blitz Needle? Gilded Griffin?

Riftlocker is a blaster-style gun. Blasters are dependable and easy to use. They put out decent damage but not great damage. They don't have any interesting status or play style, except for a bit of knockback which is sometimes useful.

Callahan is a magnus-style gun. It is not easy to use. The regular attacks have fast projectiles that put out mediocre damage. The charge attack has a slow projectile that is very powerful, if you can arrange to shoot the monsters from the front.

Callahan!

Post gunner update, the Magnus line guns have been my favorites! Riftlocker is the ok middle ground piercing gun with decent damage and more attack speed than Callahan but Callahans greater damage, chance to stun and charge attack that goes through enemies is just so sexy.

@bopp

I don't really like the autoguns, and I considered the griffin, but I wanted to see which of those two was considered better.

@foxbyte

Thx for the input. I will consider either the callahan or the griffin for my go-to piercing gun.

All Pulsar weapons deal lower

All Pulsar weapons deal lower damage and you can't spam them anymore, but they still manage to get the job done. They can clear mobs, glue enemies to corners, and lock down turrets if you're using the effective damage.

As for piercing guns, I have both Riftlocker and Callahan (and Winter Grave), but no Griffin. I do have AP though. My favourites by FAR are Magnus style guns, the normal attacks are too fast to be avoided, can lockdown soft enemies *cough*GREMLINS*cough*, and the charge can also clear whole rooms as well as annihilate single targets.

It's also worth mentioning that the Callahan is much easier to craft compared to both Riftlocker and Gilded Griffin.
