Devilite management?

I am already at the rank of Defender Elite, but I still dont understand how the devilite management works. How does a devilite get to be a boss? And how does he get downgraded? What about the green guys? What are they and how do they work? Please help me understand this :(

Pit bosses are the big blue ones. They do not attack, but they can promote. "Turns nearby Devilites into Overtimers or Yesmen. Gets demoted to a normal Devilite if all of their workforce has been disposed of."
Yes-men are the little green ones. They hang around pit bosses. "Increases defense of Pit Bosses. Turns into Devilite Overtimer if a Pit Boss dies nearby."
