Skolver/Vog for a start until I get on my feet?

While I may be getting together my good set, I like to have a reliable set for going up to Vanguard. In theory, Skolver seems like the better choice w/ Combuster+Acheron+FF+Blitz Needle, but I'm not set because Vog is a good FSC farming set w/ fire resil. I'm definitely investing in the BTS, so I just wish to know which is more effective. Before my hiatus I used Chaos, so I'd like to try the famous Wolver line. But Snarbolax only offers Shadow, and is difficult to get, so screw that.

Also, I'd consider a mixed set, which seems to be very effective, but what shield and 4 weapons to use wit hit?

sounds good

In general your plan sounds good. You might want to read the armor section of my detailed sword guide.

Vog Cub and Skolver are both good armors. Vog Cub's protections are more valuable. So if you're avoiding Chaos to have some decent defense, then Vog Cub is a natural choice.

I don't understand what you mean when you say Snarbolax "only offers shadow". That's like saying Vog Cub only offers elemental. But anyway it is hard to get, yes.

You could mix Vog Cub with Chaos, Shadowsun, Perfect Mask of Seerus, etc. If you have 70 Ancient Pages lying around, then you can get the 3-star Black Kat helmet. Also consider Swiftstrike Buckler.

Snarbolax is the Wolver set I use the most actually. I highly recommend getting it IF the opportunity arises.

Vog, on the other hand, is the set I use the least. I don't find attack speed to be as important as a universal damage boost. If you really need it, you can always get more attack speed through a good UV, which is something you can't do with a universal damage boost.

If you're used to Chaos, you can easily get away with Skolver in FSC.

agree

I agree that Snarbolax is the best Wolver set, because it has the most useful offensive bonus paired with somewhat useful defense. But it is hard to get, as Mr-Nyx pointed out.

Sets

@Bopp: Since you seem to know what you're doing, I've created a few sets that I really like that I would be inclined to use if someone could provide me with a way of knowing from experience what is the most useful. I stopped playing before the first DLC mission became available, so I don't know how heavily the meta has changed in this fashion, but I would be interested in any help I could get.

These are the sets, barring UV randomization, trinkets, and sprites, though the seraph is my favorite from what I've experienced. I particularly like Vog, but I miss the raw damage from Skolv/Snar.

1)
Snarbolax Cap
Snarbolax Coat
Barbarous Thorn Shield
Combuster
Acheron
Barbarous Thorn Blade
Blitz Needle

2)
Skolver Cap
Vog Coat
Barbarous Thorn Shield
Combusted
Barbarous Thorn Shield
Blitz Needle

3)
Exact same as above, except pure Skolver or Vog.

4)
Divine Veil
Skolver Coat
Grey Owlite Shield/Barbarous Thorn Shield
Combuster
Acheron
Barbarous Thorn Blade
Blitz Needle

5)
Chaos Cowl
Chaos Cloak
Barbarous Thorn Shield
Combuster
Acheron
Blitz Needle
Electron Vortex

Thanks for taking the time to help me. I really like sets 1 and 5, but mixed armor sets are nice. I may be focusing entirely too much on damage, and that's a side effect of playing with Chaos I guess :P

sure

In set #2, did you leave out Acheron as your fourth weapon? I assume so.

Did you play before arsenal stations were introduced? Now that we have them at the start of nearly every level, you can tune your equipment more finely. Although you want to own three swords (piercing, elemental, shadow), you rarely use all three on a single level. Just equip the most relevant two, with a gun and/or bomb if you like. I never play with more than three weapon slots. Often I play with just two.

All of these sets work. You can beat the game in any of them. Also, they are all strong in various scenarios. Set #4 is the only one to offer shock resistance. Set #5 is great for Firestorm Citadel (if you can dodge fire, and if you ignore Acheron). Vog Cub is better than Skolver for Terminal Meltdown and King of Ashes. But Skolver may be better for the hard freeze room in the Gauntlet. Choosing among these sets is basically choosing which missions will be easier and which missions may require you to spend some Sparks of Life.

You can mix the sets as you like, but eventually you may want to have unmixed sets that are optimized for particular scenarios: full Vog Cub for fire levels, full Skolver or Snarbolax for freeze levels, etc.

I'm in the middle of writing an armor guide, but basically the grand strategy comes down to this. Play with "glass cannon" armor if you can: Black Kat and Chaos. If that's too hard, then drop down to "offensive" armor: Wolver, Gunslinger, Padded, Perfect Mask of Seerus, and Demo. If you still need more defense than that, then work on your skill. But if that doesn't help, then try "defensive" armors such as Dread Skelly, Grey Feather, Divine Veil, etc.

If you're looking for a simple answer: Do set #5. If that seems too crazy, then do set #3 with Vog Cub. Vog Cub is disproportionately helpful in the later rank missions.
