It's been fifteen years since we landed on Cradle, and we are no closer to leaving. Spiral HQ has deemed it necessary to start an academy to teach the new generation (like me!).
School starts tomorrow. I'm not sure whether to be happy, or scared. Maybe a mixture of both, like the first time my best friend spiked my Sinful Brew with Enamorocks. Took me a week to come off the love high. Either way, I have a feeling my life is about to get very interesting!

Characters don't need armor yet, but otherwise, same drill as always for apps. I hope to post semi-regularly. Maybe I will actually finish this one.

Chapter 1-A Shocking Surprise

When I first walked in to the Snipe Garden, I knew something was up. I mean, why else would all the students be grouped in a circle cheering and shouting?
When I got there, I realized I should have known. You see, my friend Artus is quote the scrapper. So, seeing him in a fight with an older kid wasn't that surprising. I shoved my way between them.
"Hey, cut it out," I yelled.
"Late as always, Borden. I could have used a hand." Artus was grinning good-naturedly.
The other kid looked me up and down. I knew what he saw. 16, five foot six, with ragged black hair, I looked like a typical rebellious teenager.
I returned his stare. "Got a problem," I asked.
Artus tapped me on the shoulder. "Here comes Barrus," he said, standing straighter.
I turned. Everyone was already staring at Barrus, his being a well-known name.
"Welcome to the Spiral Academy," he commented. "Now, here's how things work. Each of you will draw a name out of this helm. The Knight whose name you draw will become your mentor. They will take you into the Clockworks, teaching through experience. Every third day will be supplementary studies in the Garrison. Now, line up and draw one piece of paper each."
I stood near the back of the line, patiently waiting. One kid drew Rhendon, eliciting an overjoyed shout. Another drew Morlin.
Artus laughed. "Morlin probably only volunteered so he could use the recruit as a test subjecy. Maybe he's trying to find out if boring our enemies to death is a viable option."
Even Barrus had to grin at that. Several other students looked shocked that anyone would say such a thing about a high-ranking officer.
Finally, it was my turn. I reached into the helm, swirling around the bits of paper, before deciding on one. I pulled it out and opened it, blinking in surprise. I had drawn Vaelyn.
Immediately, my mind set to work. Vaelyn was at the Core. Was I headed down there? Would I be prepared? Was she going to be a good teacher, disctracted as she is?
Barrus's voice derailed my runaway train of thought. "You will meet your mentors here tomorrow at this time. You will be given a full Proto Set each, before entering the Clockworks. There, your mentors will assess your skills. Any questions?"
Only one was running through my mind. What had I gotten myself into?

((Xteri, you are accepted!))

How to app.

Name : Lyra E. Teach

Age : 13

Appearance : Her femininity is all but null once one catches a glance of her. Standing at a small 4'11, Lyra's body can be passed off as frail to many (she only weighs 85 lb.), though her thin frame is not without a startlingly vibrant soul inside. Though most of her body is pale from a life without a real sun, she has darker splotches on her knees and elbows, battle scars of the boisterous childhood adventures she had before going to the academy. Similar impressions come from her eyes, too. As bright cerulean as Moonstones, they whip left and right, up and down, searching for every bit of knowledge they can get. Her hair can be likened to mahogany wood on a rainy day : a little curled and frayed at some parts, but nevertheless still straight and tinged a warm brown-red. She usually wears her neck-length locks in a loose bun, so as to not get in the way.

Bio : As stated earlier in the Appearance section, Lyra is more of a tom-boy, and often loves getting into mischief in her pursuits of anything and everything around Haven. Though she was street-smart than book smart (and popular with the boys...in a good way), she as every intent to fulfill her dream of acquiring knowledge. Now, she realized early on in her life she couldn't get that done rough-housing all day, but she couldn't cut herself from actual hard-time studying. Thus, she made the most convenient decision to go learn at the Academy, under the wings of the most seasoned of explorers and veterans. Headstrong and almost inanely eager to chase the next clue, Lyra is seen as the polar opposite of what a soldier would be, even if she would have a head-start for it.

Gear : She wields a Red Saber primarily, but also uses a Static Flash when the occasion comes by for it. She also wears a Toasty set of Draped Mail and a Crescent Helm with a Tail accessory to allow her hair go through, though she rarely uses her armor; she's more inclined for noncombative work, though she enjoys being in the field.

~~~
Name : Matthias E. Teach
Age : 13
Appearance : His spritely frame betrays his aloof demeanor...most of the time. At a much taller 5'7 and bulkier 120 lb., most would see him as a later teen than a younger, even if he's missing facial hair. Many other children are intimidated by his unintendedly glorious figure, though he passes off more as a hunk to other girls. Unlike his sister, his powerhouse figure can only be run with a good deal of blood, so he isn't as nearly as pale as his sister, so many would describe his complexion as a lovely light peach. With years of a mix of rigorous labor and play, he has collected a fair amount of work-related scars on his arms and legs, and is missing his left ring finger. His eyes speak similarly about his life. Despite being a bright harlequin green, his half-closed lids speak volumes about his fatigue. And just like his sister, his hair is akin to wood : scraggly at some parts, sometimes even daring to curl into luscious locks, yet considered straight all the same. Unlike his sister's hair, his is inky black. He cuts it enough to get it out of his face and ears, but otherwise lets the rest mat itself halfway down the nape of his neck.
Bio : Lyra's twin brother, though he's almost nothing alike to her in physicality as well as personality. Where his sister is bright, he is slow, and where she goes hyper in bursts of speed, he can toil for hours straight, if need be. Because he has brought the burden of the breadwinner on himself, he often spends time helping out in the Garrison, already increasing his rep with the Knights there. In his childhood, he did perhaps play with his twin when they were on equal footing, but for whatever reason, any games became something of an annoyance to him as he won match after match. When the time came for them to be taken out of the welfare program, he found satisfaction going beyond simply observing the diligent Knights, but also being one of them, side by side. Even though he was too young at the time to even consider the goal possible without dragging his sister along, his yearning to be great was finally fulfilled when they both turned 13. Lyra proved herself a capable human just as capable as her mind was when she first volunteered at the Garrison with him, so off the two went.
Gear : Favoring heavy-duty work, Matthias is now using the tools of his old trades back in the day : a Heavy Hatchet and a Pummel Gun. He also wears a Flak Jacket and a Round Helm, a reward for his service. It's styled as a Dusky Set.
~~~

My little criticism : There were no reprimands for an uncooperative fight. No amendments, nada. Not even a warning. Now, in a conventional army, this was very, very poor behavior to allow. I thought discipline was the number one thing besides endurance to instill in a soldier, patriotism / pride following after. And yes, while settling differences was good, there was no attempt to even determine who started what for what cause, no thinking involved. For a high-ranking officer, I just think not even asking a few questions is just way, way out of character.

Chapter 2- How Low Can You Go?

I showed up the next morning right on time, and was directed toward the Alchemy Alcove by the entrance to the Garrison. There were a few other kids there already, along with a Knight. When he turned, I gasped. Half of his face was badly scarred, and he wore an eyepatch.
"Don't worry, kid. I get that reaction a lot. Name's Arcturus. You kids had best get acquainted quick. You'll be working together to escort me to Moorcroft. If you don't have gear, sort through that pile and see if you can find anything that works for you."
I turned to the five others. "My name's Borden."
A girl I vaguely recognized stepped forward. "My name is Lyra." She was bouncing, full of energy. I admired the Red Saber she already held. Obviously, she already had some connections to have a sword like that.
One of the boys stepped forward. "I'm Phearal. These are my friends Torrin and Sellen." All three looked friendly enough, maybe we would be a good team.
The final member stepped forward. "My name is Coryll."
I have to admit, my jaw may have hit the ground. She was amazing. Long blonde hair, almost glowing green eyes. She looked me up and down, sizing me up. Apparently, something didn't quite fit, because she turned away with no further acknowledgment.
I picked my jaw up and turned to the pile of gear. Rummagingi through it, I pulled out a Flak Jacket and a Crescent Helm. I strapped two Autoguns to me belt and stuck a Troika across my back. I looked at Arcturus. "So we're escorting you. What's the catch?"
He grinned. "Your job is to protect me. Every enemy I have to kill counts against you. The quicker you get it done, the better your score. Let's go."
An hour later, we stood at the entrance to a Gremlin Deconstruction Zone. I looked at the others. "Who takes lead on this one?"
Lyra stepped forward. "I think I'd like to try. Phearal, you, Torill and Sellen stick with Coryll and Arcturus. I'll watch the back. Borden, you stay above us on those catwalks. Watch over all of us. Only come down if you have to."
I climbed up, glad for the training I had put myself through. Creeping forward, I peered over the edge. There were way too many gremlins. I mean, even a force of Knights would struggle.
"Lyra, I got massive movement just ahead of you. Pull back!"
Just then, I saw a slight disturbance against the wall right beside them. Nothing much, but even I knew what it meant. I grabbed both Autoguns, spraying the area as I keyed my comm.
"Ghostmane Stalkers!"

Here's an app! Since this is an academy/school sorta thing, I decided to recycle a character and use a younger version of her. Hope that's okay with you >.>

Name: Her given name is Hikari Nobunaga, but she goes by the alias of Athena

Age: 17

Appearance: Though she may not be as beautiful as some other girls, Hikari is very attractive. She sports long, messy hair that reaches down to her elbows. It's color can be described as chestnut, with an occasional streak of a darker, oak shade. There are many split ends, and while its appearance may lead one to believe it is coarse and rough, it's actually softer than a Wolver's coat. Normally, Hikari lets it hang loose, but when her hood is down or she’s focusing on a shot, she ties it up in a ponytail so her bangs don’t cover her eyes. Her eyes are almond shaped orbs that sparkle sea blue, giving an almost ethereal look about them. Hikari has a fit, slim figure and slight callouses on her index finger from pulling the trigger so many times. She stands at 5'7 and sports a long, horizontal scar along her stomach. Hikari has black-rimmed spectacles which neatly frame her eyes, and a light sprinkle of freckles accentuates her features, making her cerulean eyes seem even more startling. Her eyebrows are almost constantly furrowed in concentration, and while some call her eyes mesmerizing, many are startled by the harsh, calculating look evident in them, almost as if she would gladly dissect her own comrades just to learn a thing or two. (Hehe, she wouldn't. Or would she?)

Equipment: Armor- magic hood and cobalt armor
Weapons- Her brandish and Antigua are two her best friends. Though Hikari's brutal, calculating personality make her both a good strategist and scientist, she prefers to be out in the field, blasting heads off of monsters. She also has a hunting rifle she named Warhawk- it is her prized possession, and she proudly carries it around with her everywhere she goes (much to the chagrin of everyone around her).

Personality: Hikari is rather rude at times, without even trying to be. She suffers from mild Asperger’s syndrome and prefers to calls things as she sees them, so you can expect her to be honest and impartial. She analyzes things more closely than most people, and will not hesitate to call her superiors fools for making bad decisions. In the heat of battle, Hikari is brutal and merciless, shooting even Wolver pups in cold blood. Nobody really sees it, but she is shy deep down and simply uses her intelligence as a facade to hide the extremely socially awkward girl underneath. She desires to have friends, but doesn’t know how to make them. However, since she is older than most of the other recruits, she looks down on them. A term she often uses to describe her fellow recruits is "midgets". She is also find of "insect" and "pleb"

Bio: Hikari’s father was an outlaw who defected to the Gremlins, and her mother was a scientist. Being raised solely by her mother, Hikari had a rather bleak childhood. She never spent time with her sole parent, since the latter was always in her lab, deep in study. She was always expected to do well in school, and so followed her mother’s lead, doing nothing but reading on most days. As a result of this, she utterly lacks social skills and has no true friends, though she desperately wants them. At the age of 17, Hikari joined the Spiral Order under the false name of Athena, and quickly discovered that she was incredibly gifted with guns. She was less than stellar when it came to swordplay and almost blew herself up during bomb training, but was the first and only recruit to ace the marksmanship test: with a standard issue Blaster, no less. Now she's joining the Spiral Academy, in hopes that she could help her people return home.

App

Name: Orthus Thunderling

Gender: Male

Age: 16

Appearance: Dark hair and eyes, the hair being average length for a male and parted to the right. Standard build up.

Gear: standard proto armor, calibur, and a hidden silver six from his father.

Personality: Cheerful and upbeat Orthus is always cracking jokes and doing crazy things (But rarely gets in trouble for them). He is also very annoying in a sense that he is constantly correcting people and pointing out things when there wrong. He is pretty smart he makes mostly A's and a few B's. He has two sides his humorous one and his serious one. typically just blends into the crowd when he's not making the crowd laugh.

Bio: He was a standard smart kid had a happy and successful life, his parents were field engineers and marksman for the Spiral Order. He wanted to follow in there footsteps and started learning about technology and was training in long range shooting. Then one day when he was in his room he heard a knock a the door. There was a soldier there who said he was from the Spiral Order, he had come to inform Orthus that his parents had been killed while defending the wounded. Orthus was crushed at only 14 this was tough news to hear. However it only motivated him more to become a field engineer. His older cousin took him in and after a couple years told him he was going to the spiral academy.

@Xteri: I don't mind long waits for chapters, I mean... As I writer myself, there can be times where a story can't just satisfy me and I'm either forced to put it on hiatus or something. So I don't mind anymore.

I might go back to writing fics for this game (most probably yes). I'm fairly interested in it again.

Chapter 3

Of all the stupid, bone-headed things to do, that was probably the worst. I mean, screaming an alert?
Fortunately, I had the good sense to duck. A thrown blade clanged off the framework behind me. I crawled a few feet further before sticking my head up cautiously.
The Stalker had disappeared. Phew, right? If only things were that easy.
There are those who believe Gremlins are stupid, ignorant creatures. The sight unfolding before me told me that was far from the truth. Already, they were rushing the others. I unslung my Autoguns and braced to open up with cover fire.
I waited, trying to time it just right. The others were going back to back in a defensive formation.
The energy tanks on my guns were glowing. It was time. I opened up. No precision, just laying waste to as many enemies as possible. Those who slipped through soon met their end on the blades of my comrades.
For a moment, it looked like we had a chance. But, all good things must come to an end. Torrin went down with a hammer blow to the leg, Phearal and Sellen stepped out to protect him and were instantly surrounded.
I dropped one of my Autoguns, bringing the other up for a more precise shot. Just before I could pull the trigger, a shout came over the comm that made my blood run cold.
Arcturus was yelling, "Borden, brace. Mortafires!"
Well, crud. How do you dodge explosive rounds when you are on a four-foot wide catwalk?
I did the only semi-sane thing I could think of. I jumped.
Okay, okay, not my finest decision. Still, it beat getting blown to bits. Behind me, the catwalk was blown apart. The shockwave slammed into my back like a sledgehammer blow.
I slammed into the ground, bouncing hard. I could see faint figures as the fight raged. I thought I was seeing double. There were several more knights in the fight.
Out of nowhere, a gremlin leaped onto my chest. He raised a hammer to crush my skull. The last thing I saw before I blacked out was his head being separated from his body by a sword.
Welcoming darkness enveloped me.

((All new apps are accepted. Sorry for the wait. I am in the process of moving, along with preparing for the end of my high school career. I will try to post a bit more often,))

Chapter 4

When I came to, all I wanted to do was sink back into the darkness. The pain was more than anything I had ever felt. A quiet cough broke my reverie.
I turned my head. Sitting beside me was someone I recognized in a heartbeat. Apparently, I had to be injured before I could finally meet my new mentor, Vaelyn.
She stood gracefully. Fencing was obviously her style of fighting just by her movements. She regarded me carefully.
I managed to sit up, swinging my legs off the bed.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," she said softly.
"I'm fine." My reply was a bit harsh.
"Your choice," was her only response.
I started to stand, but everything went white, and I fell hard. Vaelyn stepped up, sadness in her eyes.
"What's wrong with me?" My voice was filled with pain. Not just the physical type either. If it was permanent, I might never be accepted as a knight.
She gazed at me calmly. "You have three broken ribs, a sprained wrist and a serious concussion. All of that will heal. However, the impact caused more serious damage. Your pelvis is tilted. Your right hip was severely damaged. Whether you will recover is still to see."
She reached down to pick me up. I wrenched my hand away, the sudden movement sending fresh pain through me. "I swear to Vog, if you touch me..."
Her eyes reflected sadness and hurt. "If anyone had known, you never would have ended up in that area. As soon as I heard the news, I rushed there as fast as I could. You and the other boy were on the ground, with the others surrounding you. A party of knights had found your group and joined them. They were able to drive the gremlins back."
Well, that explained my hallucinations as I lost consciousness. I closed my eyes, and instantly regretted it. I was back on the catwalk. The ground rushed up to meet me. My whole body stiffened and I opened my eyes. I was back on the bed, and the rest of the squad stood around it.
"Wha...what happened?"
Lyra shifted. "Apparently, you must have blacked out again. Are you all right?"
Coryll turned and glared at her. "Of course he isn't." Her glare turned to me. "What kind of an idiot are you? Who in their right mind jumps from fifteen feet?"
I groaned. "Well, it was a better option than being blown up, don't you think? Sorry I wasn't considerate enough to turn to roasted knight."
She growled before turning and walking away. I watched her go with detachment. She wanted me to be blown up, then she would have to do it herself.
For some odd reason, that reminded me of something that had been nagging at me. "Who was it who saved me? I remember a gremlin getting ready to kill me. Someone killed it, but I didn't see who."
Lyra shifted uncomfortably again. "Um, that was me. I saw you hit the ground, so I ran toward you. I got there just in time to kill the gremlin. Then one of the other knights came and dragged you away from the fight."
"Well, thanks. It means a lot that you would leave relative safety to help me."
Her smile wiped out most of the pain.

(( I wil work on bringing the new characters in. Also, I am speaking from experience on Borden's injuries, having made a similar mistake. This fanfic will be linked to my life, so just bear with me and I'll try and make it make sense.))
