Dyes would be an item that functions like an accessory, it lets the user recolor "Basic" armor and accessory pieces.

Normal way to obtain:
You would also be able to "Deconstruct" existing items to turn into dye.

Promos:
This would remove the need to open thousands of boxes to get the desired armor color when promos would just hand out dye and a box (no key required) that, gives you an uncolored armor piece or accessory as well as chance to get a "1% Unbox" that the promo offers.

These uncolored boxes would also appear in the prize wheel like the mirrored boxes. (would not include promo 1% drops and requires a key)

FAQ
"Would this create a lot of textures?"
No. as one of the devs said they have a value in game that lets them change the "RGB" values of an item.
(These are known as basic items, it also does not work with every item.)

"We still have to unbox stuff, how does this fix anything?"
Since these uncolored boxes can be found through the Arcade's prize wheel you could just pull one off the auction house.

Ooooh, the possibilities

I would looove this. o:
it would make hallowed and frosty more useful.

It'll be really neat if you can play around different dyes as well x3

I've been wanting to post an idea about this sort of thing for a while, but always fail to type it out in a succinct manner (usually what I write is too elaborate and/or long) and put it down until I feel like writing again. I called items that can be recolored by players electrochromic, referring almost entirely to electrochromism. We'd basically surge our items with specific frequencies/wavelengths (whatever) of "energy" (dye) and they'd change color until surged again. Only certain items would be electrochromic, as designated/released by OOO, and they'd be even more popular than prismatic, I think (of course I'd rather EVERYTHING be electrochromic but that's a sky-high dream).

Chromalisks could somehow play a role in dropping the energy charges, or they could just be rarities used in a special "surginig" machine that are unboxed along with electrochromic items, and so on. I even designed an associated "painter" npc, cousin of Bechamel, named "Velouté," but yeah never posted. "Charges" would be named "grey electrochrome," "volcanic electrochrome," "regal electrochrome," etc. as released. Even prismatic could be a thing! haha. The levels of coloration could go even deeper, where we change the color of on part of an item (like spikes, just the jaw, just the back etc.), while leaving the rest untouched, but yeah, that led to the "too much elaborate! stahp!" problem I mentioned above.

I am glad to see other players desiring similar things. Many games have an extensive player-controlled color palette (warframe and guild wars immediately come to mind), sk doesn't because...reasons!

I was going to suggest this. I think colors could be applied in a similar way to Terraria's dyes. Put it on, changes the color. Don't like that color? Take off the dye and put on another. My only question is how would I get "Yellow Dye" from deconstruction? There isn't any "Yellow Hood" or anything like that. Perhaps named dyes come from items with that style, and colors are made by combining Shards (or Minerals?) at the alchemy machine.

I doubt they'd do this, as it would be kind of like killing the golden goose that is the recolor tool. Right now they can basically just throw up whatever color scheme they want into a prize box and BAM it's done. They've got a whole slew of uniquely coloured accessories and costume pieces that are worth something and can act as filler for whatever prize box. Zero effort required.

If they were willing to overcome that and change things, this would work out perfectly, but I don't think it would be a good idea for them since this isn't that big of an issue, when the recolors are so easily done and worth so much to them.
