Well, keep in mind that you are also getting Energy. Basically, you aren't buying just boxes, but you get boxes with your energy. So, you are guaranteed to get energy, a genuinely useful currency. A few UVs are fine. I would be mad like you if you bought these boxes separately, but it works fine with this method of acquisition.
Now, I would call you a fool if you bought a lot of energy for the sake of getting boxes, but I am actually considering buying a bit of energy just because I've been wanting energy anyway. This kind of promo is for people like myself who would like to get energy as well as a few new shiny boxes.

Unless Three Rings has changed this promo all of a sudden, this is a stand-alone box promo. If they did change it over to an energy purchase one, I might consider actually buying some.

Why don't you guys just put slot machines in haven, hmm? A Prize wheel like the one at the end of levels, but with special boosted rewards, and can be used for 5 energy per spin. That sound good? Why don't you do that? Then all your rich kid gambling addicts can sit there all day blowing their energy on pitiful crown rewards and the ever sought after special jackpot prize that wouldn't lose you a penny if they won it.

What if instead of boycotting whatever, we just found the so called "whales" and tried to convince them not to purchase boxes in some way? It's a pretty easy argument to make in our favor.

A better boycott would be from purchasing any of the items from the boxes from said "whales". They currently have clear incentives to avoid your opinion because they get what they want. This gives them less incentive to purchase large quantities of boxes and sell all the extra stuff.
Logistically, the "whales" would easily agree with your opinion if energy market demand increased and promo box item demand decreased.

I hope this is sarcasm. If it is not, I suggest you reread the ToS to make sure you follow it. A few crucial areas would be the "no harassment" and "be respectful to other players" clauses.
The demand would be out of control if you tried that... scabs would have all the costumey trash they wanted at a cheap price, at least for a while. But it would work, if you got enough people on board with it. Nor do I really hate the demand for costumes, just the corrupt gambling instrument they've become.
Another thought I've had is to abuse the ignore function. You'd have some sort of a script that would update your ignore list every time you ran it (perhaps when starting your computer?) to a set of people that were found to be whales. They log in and go to Haven to talk to people, and receive nothing but silence and blank stares. They are no longer cool and fashionable for buying their prize boxes, but neglected. The beauty of this is that people only have to care a smidgeon enough to install the thing, and are then free to do... whatever.
Is that the only reason people bother with accessories, to feel good about themselves and get compliments?
Is there a different explanation, for why people would buy into the gambling trap enough for the developers to release boxes like the Equinox one?
