How to Solo Tortodrones & LIVE

Today was a really cool and interesting day.

I had all my glyphs and I was waiting for a party to join me in today's last Tortodrone mission. Since nobody came, I thought... bear with me now... YOLO I'll just solo this whole thing by myself... with one weapon... in Ancient Plate Armor... (on normal, give me a break). I thought I was going to die a jillion times like the ever so famous "WINTERFEST DEATH MOUNTAIN".

That was not the case today.

Because soloing in Ancient Plate Set with a swift strike and Iron Slug would prolly be the last thing people would think to use. I know what you're saying already: "Paintool, Ancient Plate has no shadow defense for fiends and greivers, why not use BKC set and have max damage and MSI?" I'LL TELL YOU WHY!

Ancient Plate has the most normal defense of any armor in game. A punch or tackle from a torto drone is a simple slap on the wrist. Plus, with double stun max, you can walk straight out of their stun fields A-OK. Full set is also like wearing a Penta heart pendant for free! It doesn't have shock resist, but that's what VOG gave us legs for! I spent most of my time running out of the shock bombs and dashed through hazards. Now here comes the meta part!

Because I'm running around all the time, naturally I have the time to charge my Iron Slug while I run. Iron Slug!? IRON SLUG! ( they laughin', they hatin')
Now I'll give Volcanic Pepperbox some honorable mention, but FYI Tortodrone resist everything but normal damage. Whether that means Blitz still outdoes Iron Slug isn't my guess, but the one shot normal attack is shorter before going into a charge, fiends jump for their lives, and it WORKS ON EVERYTHING.
The charge attack wen't straight through the Tortos, hitting and stunning multiple times, giving me ample time to run across the edge of the map and plan my next attack. Rinse and Repeat until done.
(V. Pepperbox is good too because it causes fire and damage, but the tortos wouldn't slow down so I got hit more I.E. Iron Slug stun is boss)

Now some downsides to this is, nobody funded my mission, I paid the full 10K crown fee. But oh was it worth it.~
I only had to spark rev once, because trojan/torto wall trap.

Interesting helper notes:
* Pet perk - Construct High
* Trinkets - Gun Damage Med + Penta Pendant
* UV's - Iron Slug CTR med, Ancient Plate Pierce + Stun max

Winter Grave is also another great choice, since it freeze-locks the drones. Functionally works great in teams since you can easily separate the drones.

Personally, I prefer my falcon shade for the shock resistance and omega shell for the massive shield hp [who needs ASI when you only chargespam].
I haven't been using trinket or weapon slots for awhile now since I gotta use up my massive quantity of bound sparks. Too bad I didnt get to use any sparks on the 5+ elite runs due to the iron slug changes.

All these years I looked up the wrong definition of live.

When bombing tortos

If you're going to do it with bombs then you might consider getting the Deadly Shard Bomb. It's somewhat easy to lure the tortos into 2 or more shards which provides reasonable DPS while allowing you to move around and dodge. As for armour i do it in Mercurial Demo set, 2 pentas and the Bomb Focus II perk. This set gives me good level of CTR, MSI med, dmg bonus medium, shock resist and enough health to tank a few hits. As for shield i use Grey Owlite because of the torto's rocket spam which is the only trouble i have in that mission, but it's nothing you can't escape with a dash and/or seraphynx aura. Nitronome and Irontech Destroyer are also good weapons to kill the torto's but i still find Deadly Shard Bomb the best.

Edit: typos

Ancient set should save you around 7.5 pips of health against a pure normal attack prior to considering damage fallout etc., so yes, the one armor set that you listed would actually work out to be significant here, primarily because it grants you a health bonus and more than twice as much defense as most other sets do for any one type. Using say, black kat set would save you around 3 pips of health each hit.

The stats that you'd sacrifice from using it over black kat would be enormous though-
ASI lost: med (as if you'd just brought the same setup but w/ black kat)
MSI lost: very high (negative 2 vs positive 2 from black kat)
Damage lost: max

And then you used your trinkets/sprite perk to make up for the damage loss, rather than going full tank-
Damage lost counting trinkets: low
Health lost: 6 (+1 penta - 2 pentas)

In the end it's a questionable proposition at best- you've given up raw health and utility stats like MSI for the ability to tank damage better. The big benefit would be that health pickups on the ground would be much nicer on the whole- rather than lots of flaky health that falls away you'd have slightly sturdier health while regaining the same amount. You also lost out on charge time reduction unless you had UVs, and I'd imagine that that would be a huge boon as you'd be able to shield more in general, and spam winter grave for the freeze easier. The big loss here though is really the MSI, which appeared to be your downfall- "I only had to spark rev once, because trojan/torto wall trap."

If I wanted to bother with resistances I'd personally go with.. exactly what Skepticraven suggested above. You'd resist a lot less damage from the drones, but you'd resist shock.. and your gunner stats would come with ctr med, damage very high vs constructs, asi med. Perfect for setting up a charge loop with winter grave. Further, a couple of unique variants of normal: max would go a long way with that loadout.

Nope. Going by the numbers on the wiki, you'd only make it from 142 to 194 with double max. Ancient is 301. It doesn't even cut the difference in defense by half.

Oh, I didn't mean to say that it would bring you close to the normal defense that full ancient would provide, just that it would bring you to the net defensive gain since paintool was trading away the pentas. I'll go fix it, because that did sound like I meant that the variants would somehow give a huge amount of normal.

The Tortofist does work well on the Tortodrone.

Though the event is done and dusted...

I agree with Skeptic on the Winter Grave having some great use against them, though I have a level 10 Mega Tundrus to compensate with, for now. Aaah, the feel of saving a teammate's life by freezing a tortodrone that is attempting to charge them. Feels good, man.

The silkwings can't keep up with the incredible DPS the charge attacks can output with either the Iron Slug or the Winter Grave, and for the latter, flash-freezing them right in their tracks is very useful. It made solo'ing them much, much less painful, even on Elite, and I only donned a level 5 Perfect Mask of Seerus (poison medium) and a level 5 Shadowsun Slicker (normal medium/poison medium), nothing too flashy.

I kind of want to get an Iron Slug now, but I got my Grand Tortofist, which is all I desired. Rest in spiraling pieces, tortodrones.

Ughh

When are they having the tortodrone thing again? I really wanted to get at least one of the tortofists, and it didn't help whatsoever that between my friends not wanting to deal with them and having a very busy work schedule, i only managed to get a couple shells.

Is it gonna be a whole year before they have it again? :/

Probably like 6-8 months. OOO

Probably like 6-8 months.

OOO likes to wait a long time between seasonal events, and probably with good reason. Their dev team is so small they can barely add new real content, let alone new content for mini events. Although if you really want a tortofist weapon Kesari, I'm actually looking to sell my 5* normal grand tortofist.

PM me in game if your interested.
