You know those rooms you come across that cost 3 energy, and usually contain 4 to 5 boxes?
What's the point of those? We never open them unless we can pop the boxes before opening it, and see an alchemy orb or radiant crystal drop. Reason being is that it's equivalent to about 250 crowns and rarely pays off.
A bit of heat? Maybe a gold coin? A freeze barrier? It's just trash you could pick up off of fighting a few enemies.

These have become obsolete, in my opinion, as the generally more sensible action is to just keep pressing forward, and you'll basically run into free boxes.

Any thoughts on this? I'm curious why they don't give em something special, like blue boxes that can't be cheesed by shooting over walls, and have a chance of dropping accessories. Energy cost could be increased to compensate.

They DO want energy and crown sinks, right?

They were more useful when

They were more useful when mist energy was around. With that 100 free energy, it was a trade-off: you could spend the energy on rooms and things like Mecha Knights, or you could use it all for elevators/revives.

They are probably a "leftover" from the Mist era, just like King's Krogmo bribes. There are a lot of things that need to change to fit the current gameplay. Vog, even the researchers on the core still talk about "gathering minerals within the clockworks and powering those gates".

a fine point

It's a reasonable point. Probably someone will tell you to move it to Suggestions.

In radiant territory, I always open the gates [unless I can check the boxes before opening] because the average rates of fire crystals tells me that it is profitable.

Outside radiant territory, I normally only open danger rooms because they have more boxes and also contain crowns/monster drops that make the gate pay for itself.

IMO, energy gates should only contain red treasure boxes behind them.

And that is why you should stock up some vials on your journey, so you can break the boxes and see if there are any rads behind the gate. We don't have to play by OOO's rule you know.

Who needs vials when you have alchemers? Plus vials don't go around corners.

I would always open them if it was on elite mode. Why? Because there was a very slim chance of item drops behind them, and 3 energy was meaningless to me whereas the crowns and crafting supplies that we got were occasionally very meaningful to some of my party members that weren't so established in the game. Even if I never did get anything incredible from it, I'd still say it was worth it for that and the various rarities I did get from it. 3 energy for an orb was always a sweet get.
