This post is going to be useful.
In another MMORPG, Runescape(which I quit), there is this thing called a combat triangle.
http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_triangle
Within this combat triangle are three classes: Warrior, Ranger, and Mage. Warrior beats Ranger, Ranger beats Mage, and Mage beats Warrior. This can be applied to weapons in Spiral Knights. Let's use Swordsmen, Gunslingers, and Bombers.

Swordsmen beat Gunslingers because swords deal more damage than guns.
Gunslingers beat Bombers because Gunslingers can damage Bombers without getting into the radius of the bombs, and Bombers can't get close enough to bomb them without getting hurt. Additionally, bombs require charging, which makes them vulnerable to bullets.
Bombers beat Swordsmen because Bombers can drop bombs that damage Swordsmen without the Bombers being near them; and Swordsmen are either blocked by the bombs or they get caught in the explosions whist chasing them.

Now, we have tactics for PvP, but how can we use this for PvE? We can apply this to monsters in the clockworks.
Wolvers, Lumbers, Gremlin Thwackers, Mecha Knights=Swordsmen.
Turrets, Devilites=Gunslingers
Gremlin Demos=Bombers(They seem to be the only ones, and the most annoying monsters.)

Using the right weapons and tactics for the right monsters can help us fight off the monsters in the clockworks.
Hope you use this.

So let me get this right...
Since the vast majority of PvE monsters are sword-based, you are suggesting that the best method for players to go is bomber?

I don't quite agree with you there. The rock-paper-scissor combat triangle approach does apply to this game, but in the form of pierce-elemental-shadow.

Wolvers, Lumbers, Gremlin Thwackers, Mecha Knights=Swordsmen.

So you're saying that since Lumbers (and similarly, Trojans) are swordsmen, approaching them with guns is not a very good idea?
If Kats are gunslingers, does that mean that bombing them won't work very well?

It's not a combat triangle, it's just a chain. People good at the game > people not good at the game. Monster aren't very good. Applies to both PvP and PvE. Just having a bomb doesn't mean you autowin sword fights.

I thought you can use two damage types and just switch accordingly.

Well, theoretically it could

Well, theoretically it could work,
DBB vs. Wolvers
Guy with Sword vs Guy with Pulsar
Grim Repeater vs. Grem Dem

but there are some exceptions.
Pulsar vs. Lumber
That moment when I bravely stepped into the Ash of Agni to slay a bomber with the Leviathan Blade's charge attack.
DBB vs. Devilites

I'm not saying that using the right weapon guarantees success. Skill can override the disadvantages of fighting with a type of weapon.
Anyway, it's just a theory.

For PvE, it kind of vaguely correlates to some situations, but other factors are just too large for it to be relevant.

The enemies in Spiral Knights are arcade enemies for the most part. This means that they were designed to be killed, and as such behave using very specific AI that makes them suited for specific types of attacks, which don't necessarily correlate like you say they do. Humans on the other hand make use of their end of the combat triangle, and so behave appropriately to the arcade-styled attacks regardless of what you classified an enemy as. A good example being the bulk of "sword enemies", which can be easily shot to death via handguns, as well as gremlin demos being just as weak to charges from acheron, winmillion, and other swords due to their ability to dodge bullets.

Players aren't tied to one weapon type either. I can go on runs and bring all 3 types of weapons if I want to, and more than that I can go on runs with all 3 weapon types and still have problems if I really try hard enough.

You may have misunderstood, it's okay. I meant these damage types
