I have an alt, and on that alt. I'm trying to be a guardian/tank. Here is my 3* equipment and battle sprite.

Boosted Plate Helm
Elemental Cloak
Boosted Plate Shield
Kamarin
Super Blast Bomb

1* Seraphinx

Any suggestions for me?
What other equipment should I get?

Well in Spiral Knights, if you want to tank, you don't necessarily need the best armor. Instead, you need the heaviest shield possible. I'd recommend focusing on the Plate Shield line for that. If the opportunity arises, the Tortodrone Shields would also serve you well.

*EDIT
Oh and the Omega Shell will do great.

agree

By "appropriate protection" I mean protection against the damage type that the enemy prefers to deal --- for example, shadow protection when fighting fiends. Player research shows that:

1. There is a significant difference between *no* appropriate protection and *some* appropriate protection.

2. There is only a small difference between armor *some* appropriate protection and *lots of* appropriate protection.

So get some normal+piercing, normal+elemental, and normal+shadow armor. You might as well get armor with offensive bonuses (Skolver, Shadowsun, etc.), because the more defensive armors protect only slightly more. When entering a level, equip the right one for the threats that you're facing.

But in the end you will not be tanky. That play style just doesn't exist in this game. Your best defense is good dodging. So go for movement speed increase (MSI) and offensive bonuses to help you kill enemies quickly. For more information you might consult my detailed armor guide.

Does that mean I don't need

Does that mean I don't need an alt, and that I can just have tanky stuff on my main?

everything on your main always

There is never any practical reason to make an alternate knight. Just keep everything on your main knight. Even if there were a tanky loadout, you could just have it on your main knight, right?

(There used to be a reason to have multiple paid accounts: You got multiple mist energy streams. But mist energy no longer exists.)

No reason to make an alt?

"There is never any practical reason to make an alternate knight"

With an alt, assuming you have mastered vanaduke, you can double your FSC payout. Run takes 30 minutes at absolute fastest speed with alt (24 minutes at fastest speed solo), but still getting 8k crowns per run. 2 runs per hour, that's 100k per hour (taking into account radiant drops). This would be the only reason for an alt...aside from trading of course. Hardest part is keeping the alt alive, but maskeraith and well thought out placement takes care of that. However, I believe 1 alt is the maximum you could use without using bannable methods.

This is if you are a hardcore F2P player, preferably not in college since it takes a toll on your energy. But it is possible.

Alt is on the same account. A

Alt is on the same account. A second account is multiboxing. There's no real reason to have a second knight on one account. I'm a bit baffled as to why the 3 slots even exist. Multiple knights is actually severely detrimental.

multiboxing

Yes, you can make multiple accounts to multi-box. Apparently Three Rings does not disapprove of it, although it feel like cheating to me.

Ah, my bad, I did not know

Ah, my bad, I did not know there was a specific term for it. In that case, having an alt isn't really useful as far as I can think of, except perhaps changing forum name?

Also, multiboxing most definitely feels like cheating, I agree! But if OOO did not approve of it it would have been banned already. I think their extent was to not use software that controls two programs at once.

That broke life...
