I really like the format that Spiral knights is in. But what is it actually? Is it 2D or 3D and what and what graphic style would you say it is? Isometric or just plain 3D?

mostly perspective 3D

The game is mostly in 3D and perspective (not isometric). These terms have very clear technical meanings, to which Spiral Knights definitely conforms.

However, SK also uses plenty of sprites, such as for pickups. A sprite is basically a 2D image that is superimposed on the 3D scene. That's why games like this are sometimes called 2.5D, as Hexzyle says.

2.5D with a side hint of Pay to Skip. Before it was 2.5D with a side of Free to Wait.

No, 2.5D refers to a game that only uses two dimensions (you can't move up and down in Spiral Knights) but has 3-dimensional graphics. Like New Super Mario Brothers.

both ways

I've heard the term used in the other sense. According to Wikipedia, the term applies to both ideas. And both ideas apply to SK.

The game is 2D although its graphics engine is 3D. That makes the game 2D.
