I can't seem to find any advanced orbs. I'm on rank 5-2, and I've completed all of the missions except for the Hall of Heroes. I just need 5 more (I have one) for the helmet and armour piece I heard that doing depths 14-17 on elite is easier than others, but I just can't get down there without 3* stuff. What are tricks I could do to get past enemies? (I'm a guy who does swords and blasters)
Tell me which is the best option:
-Do it on advanced so it's not as hard.
-Beg, beg, beg for free orbs.
-Get my guildmates (who are usually on one or two at a time)
-Defeat a boss multiple times on the appropriate depth.
Advanced Orbs of Alchemy
If you've been searching for that long, you're bound to have enough crowns to buy some CE with said crowns to buy Orbs with said CE that you bought using the crowns for CE.
Advanced Orbs are found in Strata 3, not 4. Playing Strata 3 of the Arcade is probably one of the best ways of earning crowns in the game regarding the effort to crowns ratio, since Basil frequently stocks recipes that can sell for a small profit, (3 star recipes of all the new guns, as well as most of the 2 and 3 star recipes of the new gunner armors) and occasionally stocks recipes that can be sold for a gratuitous profit (anything with the word "Twisted" in the name)
If you insist on repeating the first level of a mission over and over again, make it a 4-2, 4-3, or 5-1 mission, whichever one has the most green and red boxes.
Make sure you're in the right strata. The optimal place for advanced orbs is stratum 3, however they will appear as early as stratum 1 and as late as stratum 4. However in other strata, advanced orbs will be rare because they're mixed into the pool of other orbs rather than being the largest or only orb in the pool. Try to run missions in the appropriate strata, indicated by the depth of each level.
Alternatively, you can speedrun the first depth of any arcade gate at tier 2, just try to avoid compounds. A few levels that are easy to speedrun are: Lichenous lairs, clockwork tunnels, deconstruction zones... however decon zones don't provide many boxes. If you see an arena in the first half of tier 2, try to go for that, as it'll have a very high amount of treasure boxes in it.
You two have been the most help to me. I just read it, but I think that it will work much better than my own "strategy", if you can call it that. I just got my Solid Cobalt Helm, and I need 3 more orbs. I just don't know what a clockwork tunnel is. Is it a level where it's like construct-y? Either way, ty for the tips.
Look up arcade on the wiki, it will explain how icons are coded, and I think it explains what levels are what too
And since these are all beginner questions please move this to new recruits
Oohnorak is right, you should try to learn what the symbols on the gates mean. Each part of the icon means something different!
But the basics is that the color is monster type, background color is status type, and shape is the level type. There are a few additional blocks, as a grey (construct) gear (clockworks tunnel) can also mean a deconstruction zone - so make sure to check the gate maps prior!
So the bottom line is, in the arcade, you want to be in the first half of tier 2 (AKA, stratum 3. This is between Moorcroft and the clockworks terminal), you're wanting to land on either any color gears, any color shields, or pink monster blobs.
Also, make sure to avoid the single dust bunny with bits of grass around it, and if you can, avoid blue and yellow monster blobs. If you're unsure if a grey gear is a deconstruction zone or a construct clockworks tunnel, click on the wrench in the bottom left corner of the GUI (which may be hidden initially) and click on "gate map". The red lines should go through the current levels and point towards what the next one will be. If the name starts with "deconstruction zone", you can either wait it out or try to speedrun through it.
Learning what you'll be up against via the names of levels plus their icon will help a lot for future arcade runs!
First, I wrote a guide to address all of the "how do I get X" questions that crop up here- http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/108732
What it doesn't answer is your situation about improvement and not being able to perform. The answer to that is to take your time and have fun because what you're stuck on isn't gear, it's skill. What you can do with higher tiered gear is exactly the same as what you can do with lower tiered gear, because in nature they're the same thing- so take your time, and practice because that's fun.
I actually just bought my orbs from the auction. I am 6-1, just completed two missions for it, and I must know where I can get elite orbs. Is it strata 4? What types of levels do you think is the best for this purpose? What part of my 4* set should I upgrade first? (Solid cobalt helm/ armour, tempered calibur, super blaster or great defender)
Thank you in advance for all of the information given to me about elite orbs. I hope to see you in game!
The orb tactics are generally the same, just with a one stratum increase. Honestly it's typically a better price to buy orbs with energy, but make sure to make appropriate calculations on the current market whenever you do.
For elite orbs, speedrunning stratum 4 for boxes is your best bet. Luckily a few missions are good for doing just that, the 6-2 mission "Sewer Stach" being notorious for it. Luckily boss strata are always in the second half of tiers, and thus in even strata, so if you want to farm bosses for elite orbs and crowns it's a valid tactic!
As mentioned earlier in the thread, it may be a good idea to move this thread over to the new recruits section of the forums. That forum is more for getting information about the game, new and old players both, despite the name of the subforum.
I must know where I can get elite orbs. Is it strata 4? What types of levels do you think is the best for this purpose?
The FAQ that I linked for you in post #5 above answers all of these questions. Be sure to read the answers that people give you, or they will stop giving you answers.
What part of my 4* set should I upgrade first? (Solid cobalt helm/ armour, tempered calibur, super blaster or great defender)
You should not upgrade Cobalt armor or Defender shield at all. The upgrades are among the worst armors in the game. Just switch alchemy paths. The Calibur and Blaster upgrades are boring but not terrible...
Since you seem to be a sword-gun hybrid, you might find my detailed sword guide useful. It discusses not just swords but sidearm guns and armor too. You could also read my armor guide.
As for the question in the original post: You buy them, or you spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to find them.
@#12
As #14 has stated, don't bother upgrading your cobalt equipment. I'm not completely sure about Aegis being bad, but azure guardian is... well, terrible. I would suggest getting Wolver, Gunslinger, or Magic set, depending on your choice of weapons.
On the topic of elite orbs, I agree with #13. Get to 6-2, run sewer stash(on elite mode). Shoot the crystals with your blasters for the "open gate" button, then just skip all the monsters. Don't go on the elevator. Once you find two groups of treasure boxes, press the keybind for opening the missions menu and restart the level.
Alternatively you could do jelly king elite for both orbs AND crowns, but you won't beat it without help and sewer stash is generally much more efficient for just the elite orbs.
You should not upgrade Cobalt armor or Defender shield at all. The upgrades are among the worst armors in the game.
Now I'm 6-2, and I've beaten the Twins when I was a Squire with a guildmate, so I can almost do it without anyone (all I'm stuck on is the actual boss). I think that the other missions will be easier, and they award elite orbs. Should I do the Twins first to get it out of the way, or should I go for the elite orbs?
There are more boxes in Ironclaw Munitions Factory, so the chance of Elites from it are higher than from Royal Jelly Palace.
I will use these 5 things and their upgrades.
Troika
Voltech Alchemer
Skelly Suit
Magic Hood
Drake Scale Shield
I just need 15 advanced orbs to get their upgrades. The ones I don't have of these are the Troika and Drake Scale Shield. (by the way, tell me what upgrade path I should take)
After that, I'll need 12 more elite orbs (just got my 6th, already use 3 on the ascended calibur).
I will NOT upgrade my weapons until I complete the Hall of Heroes. I already have the calibur 4*.
I'd like to know a way to get maybe a little less than this much in less than, maybe, and hour or two. If it is possible, then please tell me how.
Also, I'm taking the advice about lichenous lairs and clockwork tunnels, but none of the open gates have them in strata 3 and 4! Also, I can't get orbs from Project R because I can't do it alone and no one is in a party for that! Also none of my guildmates are on anymore (even the GM, who made the guild for the people who get on very often). I also can't recruit anyone because I wasn't promoted to officer! I'm just below, the veteran.
Also, I thank the person that gave me 30k for this reason. I don't know how I can repay you.
Try Sewer Stash (was already mentioned) but kill everything. The mission makes enough so that if you don't get enough orbs, you can buy them from the depot. You can skip the last depth if you want.
Alternately, try Axes of Evil, pop the boxes on the lower left, and the ones across from it. If you don't see any orbs, restart the mission.
I will use these 5 things and their upgrades... (by the way, tell me what upgrade path I should take)
Please do not plan your equipment by picking 2- and 3-star items, and then thinking about their upgrades. Instead, plan your equipment by picking the 5-star items you want. Then look back in their alchemy trees, to figure out what leads to them. By following this strategy, you will avoid getting stuck in an alchemy tree that doesn't go anywhere (e.g. Winmilion) or anywhere great (arguably some of the choices you've already made).
I know what 5* items I want.
Troika = Triglav (I've seen it only does normal damage, still don't have it, you can suggest another sword)
Voltech Alchemer = Volt Driver
Skelly Suit = Dread Skelly Suit
Magic Hood = Divine Veil
Drake Scale Shield = Dragon Scale Shield
I see that the Troika may be not as reliable as I thought, so feel free to tell me some swords that do me good. (I was thinking about the nightblade, but I don't know)
I'm glad that you've thought about 5-star items. In post #14 above, you will find a link to my detailed sword guide. It can give you lots of guidance about swords, sidearm guns, armor, shield, etc.
Dragon Scale Shield is a poor choice (weak defense in most situations, and no offensive bonuses). Dread Skelly Suit and Divine Veil are okay, but have you considered more offensive armors?
Triglav is okay but not great, especially for your first 5-star sword. Consider Acheron or Final Flourish/Barbarous Thorn Blade to go with your Storm Driver. Or consider Combuster/Voltedge but pair it with a different gun such as Blitz Needle. Or Leviathan Blade if you really want a normal sword for versatility against all targets.
I see that you have made some comments about my armour choices. I mostly made them because I already have the 2* types and they have pretty good defense.
What is the best armour for a balance between offense and defense?
What shield provides lots of defense and offensive bonus?
Ty for the suggestions, I will look on the wiki for them.
What is the best armour for a balance between offense and defense?
Those would be the sworder, gunner, and bomber armors covered in my sword guide. Their defense is okay and their offense is good.
What shield provides lots of defense and offensive bonus?
The only shield that fits that exact description is Barbarous Thorn Shield, although it depends on what you mean by "lots". The only other shield that offers offensive bonuses is Swiftstrike Buckler, which provides terrible defense.
I don't know why, but whenever I click on the sword guide link, it just refreshes the page
Same deal, list w/ loadout.
Nightblade = Obsidian Edge
Voltech Alchemer = Volt Driver
Helm/ Armour (haven't figured that out yet)
Bristling Buckler = Barbarous Thorn Shield
The sword guide works now, but it says nothing about guns or bombs (idc about bombs). Is there another guide?
It does discuss guns and bombs as sidearms to swords, in the Mixing Weapon Types section.
If you want to read more about guns and bombs specifically, then read the Gunslinger Guide or the Bombing Guide.
So you reccommend a Calibur upgrade, but not a Troika upgrade. Please explain?
This has been my standard advice, in my sword guide, for years. Sudaruska/Triglav have a very slow swinging rate, which is dangerous for new-ish players who haven't mastered the monster AI. I don't want new-ish players to get unnecessarily frustrated by the game, just because they're using a difficult weapon.
(My first 5-star sword was DVS, and I found the game quite difficult, until I tried other swords. FF/BTB was a revelation to me. (Then the range was nerfed because of PvP.))
To experienced players I would give different advice: Get Fang of Vog, not Leviathan Blade, for access to that style of charge attack. And get either Sudaruska or Triglav, because you are bored with brandishes. Learn that charge attack well, and learn when you can and cannot safely sweep crowds with the regular attacks.
Does that seem reasonable?
Ah, I see. I forgot that although a Troika might have a higher DPS and defensive value than a Calibur, it's not as newbie friendly.
If you're getting obsidian edge and volt driver, I suggest you get chaos armor as both of them have very nice charge attacks.
But if you're not comfortable with negative status resistance(if you have good internet then it shouldn't affect you all that much), I suggest you not get volt driver and instead go for another piercing/elemental gun that doesn't depend on charge as much.
The Obsidian edge is a weapon that requires grinding the "Shroud of the Apocrea" event. If you've never done it, then it might be a bit of a difficulty shock when you get to it. The other part of the nightblade that works is the "Acheron", which is notorious for being the most overpowered weapon in the game as it hits like a heavy weapon but swings like a brandish.
I have a bit of a personal preference for helping new players pick out a loadout. While in tier 2 it's pretty easy to figure out what is going to cause them trouble.
For instance, be wary of what is hitting you when you shield, what is good at hitting you when you're not shielding, what enemies you have trouble fighting, etc.
Then decide your loadout based on that. My most recent prodigy went the whole divine set path, grey owlite shield, acheron, and arcana.
Personally, I've found that an acheron is good in any situation, and having an elemental sidearm (see: gun) is a great choice, since no turrets are strong against elemental damage (in fact, 2/3 are weak to it). After that, you can work on your next two weapons, ideally an elemental sword and a piercing gun, or if you now fancy yourself a gunslinger/pure swordie, a shadow gun/piercing sword. Elemental sword is either divine avenger or combuster* (however: leave these at 4* until you max out your acheron!) and either a callahan or a blitz needle* (blitz is more useful in the long haul. Callahan is more for powerful charge attacks that devastate crowds whereas blitz is great for one-shotting tough opponents).
*I recommend these more
Now for armors, I recommend filling all categories as quickly as possible. Get your offensive armor (chaos), get your defensive armor (dragon scale/divine set), get your weapon specialty set (wolver, gunslinger, bomber, new gunner armors). After you do this, then branch out and cover all status fronts. Do you have freeze resist? If not, perhaps make skolver if you're digging swords, or perhaps pursue the rare and expensive black kat set. Do you have a MSI set yet? Do you think you can run shadow lairs? If so, get mercurial demo. If not, just go mercurial unless you suddenly have enough for black kat.
After armors, fill in for what defenses you don't have in shields. First shields I recommend for players is one with fire/elemental resistance because A) you're going to shield elemental monsters a lot and B) you're going to spend a lot of time in FSC so you might as well have a fire resist shield. Grey Owlite is my go-to, however dragon scale will not do you wrong (but it will make several enemies more dangerous than they should be). After that is filled, go offensive (swiftstrike + barbarous thorn shield), defensive (plate shield), then statuses(dread skelly, grey owlite, if you can the piercing tortoshield).
TL;DR - get acheron + elemental gun of choice, preferably a blaster or pulsar. Get grey owlite shield and defense for whatever enemies give you the worst trouble (shock fiends = divine set, fire slimes = dragon scale), and don't mix and match your first set. After your first set get glass cannon gear.
I have ALL of the things that I am looking for and their 2* variants in mind.
Brandish (Nightblade) = Acheron (I would get Obsidian Edge if it weren't for the event)
Magnus = Callahan
Chroma Suit = Arcane Salamander Suit
Wolver Cap = Snarbolax Cap
Bristling Buckler = Barbarous Thorn Shield
That's my list, and I thank you all for coming up with ideas for my loadouts (and the main topic, orbs)
Acheron: Great.
Callahan: Great.
Arcane Salamander Suit: Terrible. One of the worst armors in the game, and one of the hardest to get.
Snarbolax Cap: Great, although one of the hardest armors to get.
Barbarous Thorn Shield: Great.
Arcane Salamander and Snarbolax cap are both shadow lair items. You'll have to at least run through a shadow lair once to get those made (and buy the material of the other).
Good thinking on your setup... However I would recommend probably sticking with one full set. Want a good sword set? I'd say go down the skolver line if you're doing damage, or vog cub if you like fast attacking swords.
Salamander isn't bad thinking because of fire resist, however it's probably not the best path to go down. As I said above, you probably want a full set of wolver if you like swords. Vog cub was one of the most popular sets back in the day.
Weapons look great, definitely try out the magnus and see how it feels. If you like it stick to it - it's a super fun (and powerful on charge) weapon!
Shield is good, definitely a highly recommended one.
Armor, try to pick out something easier to attain. Kat gears, snarbolax, arcane salamander, heavenly iron, ice queen, almirian, and mercurial demo are all hard to obtain sets, requiring either a heavy event investment or a shadow lair to be completed.
EDIT: Ninja'd by Bopp. Here to bring in the mandatory "Arcane is one of the highest in elemental + normal defense armors in the game, plus it has family bonuses and fire resist". Arcane is a slippery slope because its defenses don't match with it's combat bonuses, but if it's your all-around armor, it won't be a bad thing for your health.
I'm changing the armor helm and armour to skolver armour.
Great. Now all of your equipment is very powerful and standard, except maybe for Callahan, which is powerful and slightly unusual.
It's a little sad, but here's how I justify it:
Players should start with the most powerful/easy weapons, while they learn the game and reach good farming areas. When they get bored with those weapons, they can branch out to more interesting ones such as troikas, catalyzers, tortofists, etc. In this way the game gets slightly harder to match the player's progress.
By the way, if the original poster had chosen Deadly Virulisk instead of Arcane Salamander, I would have said, "That's not the best armor, but it's an interesting and useful option, so go for it."
IMO Volcanic Salamander is more useful. It's handy at 3 star for RJP, and then it becomes handy at 4 and 5 star for FSC. RJP killing gear, and FSC status protection on the cheap.
In this way the game gets slightly harder to match the player's progress.
The game already gets harder as the player progresses. You jump into the arcade, and continue progressing until you find your "jam". For me, I start to get a little uneasy in depths 26-28.
The overpowered setups I feel are for those who can't play anything other than the rank missions for some reason, and want to finish them as fast as possible. This game isn't such a grind when you muck around in the arcade, playing for fun rather than for completionism. But I'm an old geezer who also happens to be a hipster, so my 2 cents is probably not even worth half that.
I agree that Volcanic is better than Arcane, if only for its +2 bonus and ease of access. Volcanic vs. Deadly is not as clear-cut. Volcanic's damage protection makes no sense, but its status and damage protections are more important than Deadly's.
Yes, the game already gets harder as the player progresses, but I am talking about replay. After the player has finished the game, s/he can replay the game on the same knight with more challenging and interesting equipment.
I don't see any relationship between overpowered vs. underpowered setups and missions vs. Arcade. For example, many players use overpowered equipment in Arcade gates. And yes, I am a fan of the Arcade too.
I agree that Volcanic is better than Arcane,
Only because you don't need a bonus damage againsts beasts, they're hardly threatening (except Rabid Snarby, yikes, but you wouldn't need elemental defense there anyway) even if they do show up and are a pain in the butt on depth 27 of FSC.
Buy them from the supply depot.
